Virginia Tech Shooting. Yes. Again.

We have another shooting at Virginia Tech, separate from the 2007 shooting. This is happening the same day as the university attempts to appeal a $55,000 fine relating to their response to the shooting in 2007.
Official statement from Virginia Tech, as per this report from WDBJ:
"Shortly after 12 p.m. today, a Virginia Tech Police officer stopped a vehicle on campus during a routine traffic stop in the Coliseum parking lot near McComas Hall
During the traffic stop. the officer was shot and killed. There were witnesses to this shooting.
Witnesses reported to police the shooter fled on foot heading toward the Cage, a parking lot near Duck Pond Drive. At that parking lot, a second person was found. That person is also deceased.
Several law enforcement agencies have responded to assist. Virginia State police has been requested to take lead in the investigation
Status of the shooter is unknown. The campus community should continue to shelter in place and visitors should not come to campus."
The suspect is described as a white male, gray sweat pants, gray hat w/neon green brim, maroon hoodie and backpack.
We'll keep the OP deliberately scarce for now. The suspect, as of this writing, is still at large.
I have a new soccer blog The Minnow Tank. Reading it psychically kicks Sepp Blatter in the bean bag.
Uh, or maybe don't check and stay hidden / behind cover, if you're on campus.
Edit: if you're in the area and want to do something, now's as good a time as any to donate blood / plasma to the local blood bank.

It sounds like a traffic stop shooting that just happened to be near VT, not as much as a person shooting people at VT deliberately.

There was a robbery in Radford, VA (which is fairly nearby) yesterday and the suspect in that case apparently has a similar description... which could explain why this guy shot a cop at a traffic stop.
They found someone dead in a parking lot too, Ron. And there's unconfirmed reports of more gunfire.

Exams, scheduled for tomorrow, have been postponed. In addition, the rest stop in Radford off I-81 is closed indefinitely, as are any events lanned today by Blacksburg Park and Rec.
According to VT: "There are no new substantiated reports of suspicious or ciminial activity. Status of the shooter remains unknown."

Sigh, I'm just worried this will become another story about the failure of the administration to prevent violence and alert/protect the community (a la every remotely unpleasant incident involving the university or its students since April 2007). Having the media blindly toss blame here and there slandering the university because some psychopath happened to be in the area doesn't help much.
If you recall, the last shooting looked like a cut and dry domestic murder. So people got complacent, and by the end of the day we had a college full of dead bodies.

Best not to have a repeat of that.
Oh, I certainly agree.
There were numerous failures that day regarding the way (or lack of a way) students were alerted.
Since then however, the university has been borderline annoying (in a good way) to the extent in which they keep students informed and secured in situations like this.
The media has still taken it upon themselves in several stories since (kidnapped VT campers, kidnapped VT girl from a concert in Charlottesville, guy with a model rocket that was presumed to be a gun) to assert that the university's shortcomings were responsible for each of these incidents... Nevermind that two of them happened 25+ miles from campus.

Suspect shoots police officer in a traffic stop in a parking lot on Washington Street. Witnesses report suspect fleeing on foot down Washington Street -- meaning he had to abandon his vehicle. At the very next parking lot about three blocks down Washington Street in the direction the suspect was observed fleeing, a deceased gunshot victim is found.
It's good to be cautious, but my guess is he's in the second victim's car trying to put as much distance between himself and Blacksburg right now.

Yes, that's probably an accurate guess, but intuition doesn't always map onto reality.
Maybe we could go a few days without people blowing other people away?
Which exit is that near? I just said I expect him to be in the second victim's car putting distance between himself and Blacksburg, but that sounds like that ought to be around an hour or so from Richmond. It's not outside the realm of possibility that it's connected, but it sounds unlikely to me.

That's the exit on I-81 for Blacksburg.
Edit: Read 81, not 95... Curiously, Exit 118 is the exit for Blacksburg on I-81, though.

He definitely had enough time to make it there if he went, like 81 > 66 > 95 or something, but that seems a really odd route.
Allegedly a voice of reason.

Updated at 4:31 p.m. ET: The Collegiate Times reports that there is now "no active threat" at Virginia Tech and that students are being allowed to "resume normal activities."
I think the implication is that he offed himself, or else they wouldn't lift the alert. Although I guess it's not out of the realm of possibility a "hero" shot the shooter, but I don't think that's likely.

They're reporting a weapon found with the second victim... possibly the shooter's.
Interesting. Like I said, it's good to be cautious, but if that's what happened then I'm not sure why that would have taken four hours to verify. The two locations were about 700 feet apart and there were supposedly multiple witnesses at the primary location who should have been able to identify the clothing on the suspect at the secondary location.

Well, a maroon hoodie and gray sweatpants are pretty much standard attire for males in December there.

Police say the officer stopped someone and a third party not involved in the stop walked up and shot the officer.

Yeah the bit from your penultimate post about "Subject approached officer and fired weapon turnleft scene" had me scratching my head. An officer approaches the subject of a traffic stop, not the other way around.

There are probably people on this board that attend VT.

Yeah, that's what the description sounds like to me.
As long as the shooter isn't captured stay alert, you never know what he might be planning.
Best not to have a repeat of that.

Yeah, to be honest it would be pretty unlikely to find anyone other than students in the reported parking lot. Younger students, no less.
Unconfirmed it was another firefight, this time with the suspect being injured (E: or killed).

...Uh, okay.
So who killed the shooter, then? Unless they shot themselves, I guess.
