My company is looking into solutions to record audio for classes, presentations, and training to go with the videos we record. We have a pretty good camcorder (Vixia HFM30) but we need to improve our audio quality.
Our head of training would like a clip on mic but the quality and price vary quite a bit. Can anyone office guidance on what to look for? Ultimately these videos will be compressed and released on our intranet.

a rode vidopro shotgun mic might work depending on the size of the room. That's a shotgun for the camera, not a lapel. if he already is using a PA for the presentations, getting a stand alone audio recorder like a tasco dr40 and running from the PA board to it would get you the best audio track, but then you'd have to put it on the video in an editing program. For a lapel that will run straight to a 3.5 jack?
I'd consider one of these but make SURE you buy the 1/4 to 3.5 adaptor as well (it's another 3 bucks) if you're on a budget
I wouldn't use the lapel mic because its one more thing for a professor to futz with, and those are easy to set wrong and break. I would get a standalone recorder.

Chances are myself or one of the tech guys will be present to set up these presentations - as 99% of them will be in a training room in our main office where we work.
In that case, I'd go with a lapel if you find that presenters like to move around, but otherwise I'd go with a standalone for convenience and cost.
As long as you avoid wireless systems, you should be able to keep the cost in the reasonable world.
