So BitTorrent.com MPAA Edition launched today...

...And surprise, it kinda sucks.

BitTorrent.com is partnered with a decent list of studios, including 20th Century Fox, Comedy Central, Lions Gate, Warner Brothers, and Paramount. The site looks pretty clean and neat. The selection appears to be pretty decent at first glance, with movies like Superman Returns and Little Miss Sunshine on the front page. There's even a couple gems that are free, like Night of the Living Dead.

Problem is, after 20 minutes or so of sifting through what else there is, it gets a little depressing. A lot of the categories lack a single killer choice, and most are full of crap (check out the Martial Arts section, *sigh*). Navigating the categories is a chore, since for some reason TV shows are listed alongside movies, an episode at a time, no less. I had to sift through four pages of '24' episodes to get to any movies alphabetically buried below them. Pricing is steep, too. Movies range from $2.99-$3.99, and TV Shows are $1.99 a pop. I would like to believe that offloading bandwidth to the users would translate into a movie costing less than a trip to my local Blockbuster, but, well, no dice.

The nail in the coffin (for me) is the god damn DRM. Any items you purchase from BitTorrent.com have a maximum 30 day lifespan. You have access to that piece of media for a month, until you hit play. Then its dead in a day, whether you finished watching the movie or not.

That said, I'm still going to give it a shot. If I can find anything worth the three dollar rental.

    TV shows at least, right?

Why would anyone pay these guys?

That is bullshit. I often watch the first 30 minutes of a movie and then wait a few days before watching more of it.

Actually I might be wrong on the TV Shows. The Usage Rights section on a random episode of 24 states "You can watch this on two computers" and doesn't explicitly state any expiration of any kind. All the movies I've seen use the same approach I mentioned above though.

Uh. Hm. So, let me get this straight. I'm paying for this, but I still have to download stuff with torrents? Meaning that I still have to contribute my own upload bandwidth and hope that the torrent is well-seeded?

    I'll pass, thanks.

Feel free to talk about this exciting development in crappily encoded, DRM'd multimedia. But come on guys, don't talk about alternative sites where you can go to download movies or other things of questionable legality. Piracy has never been kosher on these forums.

Sort of like a bring-your-own-blank-DVD rental shop?

Surely they must be well seeded though. They'd have at least thought of that.

I look at it this way. If there IS legitimate torrent usage such as this, it adds to the overall longevity of torrent as a whole. Up until now, I see open source software distribution (linux, etc.), WoW patching, and not much else that is distributed via Torrent. Here we have something that is even done by the movie studios, even if it has downsides. Hopefully this means that ISPs, colleges, etc., will not have as much reason to block torrents en masse.

Also, the Xbox 360 movie downloads also have a limited period of time to "sit" on your machine after you rent it, and a limited amount of time to watch, after you start watching. If I recall, it's 14-days and 3-days, respectively, but I could be wrong. So, this isn't so different from that, and apparently that is a reasonably respectable service. Of course, it also has stuff in HD.

So, (assuming I was in the US, and had a Windows machine) I could pay three dollars, wait for the file to download, and have that file self-destruct in thirty days -OR- I could buy it second-hand on Amazon for the same price, wait for it to arrive by post, then play it on any device I liked and keep it indefinitely?

    I'll take option B, thanks.

Even assuming we're talking more recent films which would be more expensive to purchase I still can't see how this would work out better value than online rental places. Those also have the advantage of leaving you in control of when, and how many times, you watch something, and don't mandate expensive software.

I saw that, actually. I'm going to download it as soon as I get home. Anything on BitTorrent.com is supposed to be legit; I guess we'll see how they keep the content on here under control. You can publish your own content, which I thought was kinda cool (just creating a .torrent file under a fancy name, but still cool).

I think I'm going to try out Requiem For a Dream, though I'm not expecting much on the quality side. Its 1.13 gigs, which is a good 400 megs less than a standard 1.4 gig xvid rip I would find on less than legitimate sites. So...unless they magically created a better codec that none of the rippers know about, I'm paying money for a lesser quality rip than what those who scream "yar!" have to offer.

    *sigh*

Well on the plus side, it's at least a step in the right direction. More digital media offerings is always a good thing. Spreads awareness that it's a viable alternative at least.

On the other hand, the DRM is pretty retarded. Though I kinda like that you get to keep it for 30 days till you watch it. Sorta an extra long movie rental with a catch. Doesn't sound TOO bad of an alternative, eh?

Christ, no. At the very least, colleges should block torrents without exception, regardless of how legitimate it is. My connection is completely devastated by the jerkoffs in my dorm who hog all the bandwidth all day long. Bittorrent has no place in an environment where a connection is shared by many people.

Trygames is the Internet destination for legitimate downloadable PC games and software. We are working with BitTorrent to offer more than 250 titles for download, free trial and purchase. Game files from Trygames and BitTorrent may be shared by any method (burn to CD/DVD, e-mail, IM, etc.) and will revert to trial mode each time they are passed along.
What I'm getting from this is it's a "You can try it for awhile then you get to buy it" system. But if you purchase it then burn it and give it to someone it will once again be a trial version for whoever it was given to. http://www.bittorrent.com/users/trymedia
