...And surprise,
it kinda sucks.
BitTorrent.com is partnered with a decent list of studios, including 20th Century Fox, Comedy Central, Lions Gate, Warner Brothers, and Paramount. The site looks pretty clean and neat. The selection
appears to be pretty decent at first glance, with movies like Superman Returns and Little Miss Sunshine on the front page. There's even a couple gems that are free, like Night of the Living Dead.
Problem is, after 20 minutes or so of sifting through what
else there is, it gets a little depressing. A lot of the categories lack a single killer choice, and most are full of crap (check out the Martial Arts section, *sigh*). Navigating the categories is a chore, since for some reason TV shows are listed alongside movies, an
episode at a time, no less. I had to sift through four pages of '24' episodes to get to any movies alphabetically buried below them. Pricing is steep, too. Movies range from $2.99-$3.99, and TV Shows are $1.99 a pop. I would like to believe that offloading bandwidth to the users would translate into a movie costing
less than a trip to my local Blockbuster, but, well, no dice.
The nail in the coffin (for me) is the god damn DRM. Any items you purchase from BitTorrent.com have a maximum 30 day lifespan. You have access to that piece of media for a month, until you hit play. Then its dead in a day, whether you finished watching the movie or not.
That said, I'm still going to give it a shot. If I can find anything worth the three dollar rental.

TV shows at least, right?
Why would anyone pay these guys?
Haha.
I don't think I have ever gone to the original bittorrent site. Ever. Not even to download the client. I started out using Azureus and I AM NOT GOING TO TALK ABOUT WHERE I DOWNLOAD ILLEGAL TORRENTS FROM - THANKS. LOVE, MONOXIDE
-ed.
I'll pass, thanks.
Sort of like a bring-your-own-blank-DVD rental shop?
Surely they must be well seeded though. They'd have at least thought of that.
IT'S THE AMERICAN WAY
Also, the Xbox 360 movie downloads also have a limited period of time to "sit" on your machine after you rent it, and a limited amount of time to watch, after you start watching. If I recall, it's 14-days and 3-days, respectively, but I could be wrong. So, this isn't so different from that, and apparently that is a reasonably respectable service. Of course, it also has stuff in HD.
I'll take option B, thanks.
Even assuming we're talking more recent films which would be more expensive to purchase I still can't see how this would work out better value than online rental places. Those also have the advantage of leaving you in control of when, and how many times, you watch something, and don't mandate expensive software.
They expect people to pay $1.99 for each of the sevtions of the Animatrix?
Fuck that shit
Where Madness and the Fantasical Come to Play
I think there's a lot of things that could fill in that blank.
there you go
Isn't that the same excuse behind piracy in the first place? :P
I never asked for this!
<_<
>_>
Deus Ex. For free... as in beer and internet.

Looks like the full version, too.
I'm expecting yes, but you never now, perhaps there is at least one person in the MPAA with half a brain cell.
Where Madness and the Fantasical Come to Play
"Well, iTunes has been the most successful service thus far. Let's take their model, but let's shit all over it."
If you can't beat 'em, kick the shit out of the their idea and offer it up as some sort of bastardized pay service that just makes piracy an even bigger problem.
You just know a little bit down the road they will release a press release saying how shocked they are at this being unsuccessful. And probably say something about how piracy is the devil.
I never asked for this!
If Night of the Living Dead does, you can get it (legally) here. It's now Public Domain.
They also have an iPod version, and a whole load of other, free, feature films.
"Beyong Pearl Harbor"
Hehe.
I think I'm going to try out Requiem For a Dream, though I'm not expecting much on the quality side. Its 1.13 gigs, which is a good 400 megs less than a standard 1.4 gig xvid rip I would find on less than legitimate sites. So...unless they magically created a better codec that none of the rippers know about, I'm paying money for a lesser quality rip than what those who scream "yar!" have to offer.
*sigh*
On the other hand, the DRM is pretty retarded. Though I kinda like that you get to keep it for 30 days till you watch it. Sorta an extra long movie rental with a catch. Doesn't sound TOO bad of an alternative, eh?
actual screenshot of the site
I'm still wary though. There has to be a catch.
Wait, didn't Battlestations: Midway just come out?
Ya, the real world is playing the Pacific War and the MPAA is still on Berlin. I hope they get killed in action.
I'm there.
edit: Or not. EB sales bin, here I come.
Also, whoever wrote those descriptions needs to be shot. Jesus.
