It will be interesting to see if the old dungeons are gone or they have been altered somehow. If they are playing off the passage of time, some could be flooded, collapsed, or expanded on.

Yeah, notice in the comparison shot that some trees are still standing where LttP had stumps, and some signs are absent in the new one. I'm guessing prequel, unless it's been explicitly denied.

He does dabble in time travel in lttp so it's possible that it's related that way... not necessarily a prequel.

I use the phrase "cautiously optimistic" a lot, but in the case of this new Zelda game I really mean it.

I've stated more than once that Link to the Past is my favorite videogame of all time, and I still stand by that statement. So when Nintendo announced a spiritual successor/sequel to that specific point in the Zelda series, I immediately thought "Be careful, Nintendo. Be very careful." Those are some really big shoes to fill, and even releasing a game that's "very good" would be a disappointment in my book.

I do share some of the criticisms with how the game looks currently. I don't want to say it looks cartoony, because they technically are replicating the look of the sprites from the original. But they're also lacking something that makes them feel more "toy-ish".

The original LttP didn't have the gritty artstyle of Twilight Princess, but it did have a certain darker mood to it than most Zelda games, evidenced both with the style as well as the plot (highest body count of any series). I wish they would implement a slightly rougher lighting to it, or something to give it that needed contrast between the LttP "series" and other games.

Basically, this is how a LttP remake/successor should look like:

The twist is that in this game you don't play as Link.
You play as a pink bunny from the dark world who accidentally found his way into the light world and had his form twisted and changed!

For some reason, they always want to hang on to that Wind Waker style. I guess it is because it makes Link look really innocent.

Really, I still have plenty of Zeldas to work through. I got Skyward Sword, Spirit Tracks, Phantom Hourglass, Minish Cap, Four Swords, ALttP, and the Seasons games to complete. I am just past the Ice Palace in ALttP. I hope the battery still works on the cart. I was thinking about soldering in replacement batteries on the SNES carts. They have to be getting close to running out.

I'm in agreement that I'm missing the nice, hard lines, but if it's fun, I'll give it a pass; just feels like that "clean" definition was one of the defining traits of LttP's art, and it's missing here.

That video shows off some delicious gameplay. It's still Zelda as we knew it, but it's been taken to a new level (not sure if pun intended). I really don't have time to game on the go so I've been ignoring hand-helds, but Nintendo may just have found the last straw needed to get me to stop ignoring 3DS.

Not until this game is out, however.

If I'm going to play at home I'd much, much rather be playing comfortaly on a console, but WiiU isn't "there" yet for me, wheres 3DS seems set to hit critical mass in my universe this winter, thanks to this new Zelda.

I guess I have research to do, to see if the standard or XL are more comfortable for me (or a deal-breaking not comfortable at all, which would be weird for Nintendo but I don't leave such things to chance), and also what's easiest to prevent marking of the screen by the opposite half of the unit.

Other Links have emoted to some limited extent before him, as well as pretty good after him, but Toon Link really was the first incarnation of the guy in the green suit and mail that had a full, expressive and frequently used range of emotions. That huge face really helps show off and sell a variety of reactions.

That sounds more like an indication of a decison you personally made than any commentary of the number, or quality, of games on the 3DS; not even taking into account DS games.

EDIT: I mean, hey, not saying it isn't the case for you. I'm just saying that it's objectively not because of the number or quality of 3DS games new and old.

I wouldn't even say this looks anything like an advancement from link to the past's graphics.
It looks more like if you took legend of zelda 1 style and artwork and plopped them in to link to the past's world.

Because of this, i'm calling "Prequel".

Ehh. I would disagree on the Zelda 1 art style part. It is just a 3D version of ALttP artwork with some Wind Waker mixed in.

I'm not going to turn the Zelda thread into a "Houn should play these 3DS games thread", because Zelda <3, but I'll throw in one response to you all before I go wander over to check the 3DS thread:

I largely I don't pay that much attention to 3DS releases, the few I see don't turn my head, and I generally don't like gaming on the tiny little screen when I have my PC or Consoles on much nicer screens in the same room. Also, the 3D doesn't really do much for me; I see it, it's nifty, but rarely adds to the gaming experience for me. Maybe it's just me being "blah", maybe it's my glasses, I dunno, but I generally leave the 3D off.

Still probably gonna pick up this new 3DS LttP game, unless I end up hearing something terrible about it; it's on the default "buy" list.

Not sure if you're specifically talking about LttP 2, but Link actually looks closer to classic Link (brown hair) than WW Link so far. That's a thing I'm specifically in favor of, since it works with that specific "continuity". If they went full WW Link for this game I'd be very upset (not because I hate the design, but that it just isn't the one I associate LttP with).

The thing about those old 8&16-bit games, is with the lack of detail, people tended to "fill the gaps" with their own imagination. Over time, our personal interpretations are cemented along with all the nostalgia, and people end up having very different views of the original. I personally think that fan art posted earlier is far to dark and messy for ALttP.

Some people have some pretty wacky ideas that they filled in. I saw some guy over on Reddit describe ALttP as being "like a fevered nightmare, with a sense of wonder glimmering underneath a thick shroud of oppressive tragedy."

That's what made it so awesome. A new, proper sidescrolling Metroid on the 3DS is beyond insta-buy territory for me. Like, when I was a kid, I begged my parents to buy me Metroid Prime early and I would forfeit ALL OF MY CHRISTMAS AND BIRTHDAY. It's that kind of territory.

As this is a Zelda thread, I'll properly contribute. Watched some IGN gameplay from Lttp2, looks super promising. I'll be all over that day one.

I think the next Zelda game on the WiiU should bring the three timelines back together. Have a new Link jumping between the timelines "reconnecting the streams" of history. Each timeline will feature a unique art style based on the universe (toon, realistic, etc) and he'll have to work with the last Link of that era.

It would simultaneously piss off and excite every Zelda fan on the planet....which would be par for the course for any Zelda release. :)

I'll go with Japanese dates for this:
    SNES was Nov '91
Link to the Past was Nov '91
    Super Metroid was Mar '94.

I said early SNES; SMW, Super Adventure Island, LttP, etc.
