So I finally cracked open gears of war from way back in Christmas when I got it. I have been playing the heck out of it, but now whenever I try to load it up I get a disc read error telling me I need to put in a 360 game disc. I have to restart the system 5-10 times to actually start playing the game. I want to see about taking the system to Microsoft and getting it replaced, but I don't know where the receipt is. I have heard that I can send it back without the receipt, and I have heard that I need it to send it back with the receipt or they won't do anything. I have tried calling MS on the issue, but after half an hour of being on hold everytime I call I give up.
Does anyone have any exp. on the issue of sending back the 360 with a missing proof of purchase?

I don't think you need the receipt as long as you've registered it.
But I don't know for sure. You should just call and try. Say you've lost the receipt. Also, most stores can print another receipt for you if you paid with a credit/debit card.
I'm in the UK and had the same kind f thing - I called "Game" (where I bought it) and told them I didnt have the receipt. I just took in a bank statement - and they also could have checked their records on the loyalty card... Just swapped it for a new machine. No fuss, no muss.
Depending on how new the 360 is, MS may be able to take it back for repair based off the serial number and production date. Call first and verify, of course. Otherwise, your best bet is to head over to the store you bought it at and ask customer service to dig out your receipt. Not all places will do this, but I know at Best Buy, if you can produce the original card you used to pay, they can pull receipts from a couple years back within about five minutes.
I can confirmed that if your console is registered with Microsoft you do not need a receipt to send it in for repairs. They'll ask to confirm you address, phone number, serial number, etc. over the phone.
If I were to register it today could I still send it in with no troubles? I have never been online with the thing. Though I did put a friends hard drive on it once that had been online with his machine. . . but I don't think that helps me much in this instance.
Come to think of it. I really didn't get the errors until I put my friends hard drive on it, and it updated the system. Could there be a relation to the error and the update?
I got the EXACT same problem when I got Gears. I beat the game on easy and medium, but then it randomly started messing up on me. It turned out that my 360 was fine and it was actually my gears disc. Take the game back and get a new one. Even if you don't have the receipt for it most stores will take it IF you are getting the same game. Hope this helps.
I didn't need a recipt, and I didn't register it, just read my serial number off to some person on the phone. Maybe the prevous owner did register it, who know, got mine off eBay.

No, it's because the serial number told them it was manufactured before a certain date. Those consoles are repaired for free.
How old is your xbox 360? if you got it when they were first coming out you probably have the old cd-rom drive which sucks hardcore and won't read some games. You can call 1-800-my-xbox or something like that and ask them about updating your system to make the game work, getting another copy might do the same thing. From my experience as a tech support for Activision Value its normally the hardware causing problems.
edit - so yeah , now i realize thats what you want to do... Ignore me.

Did you register your console on your Xbox Live profile?
