Hmm. This is acceptable. It's a pretty glaring flaw, but acceptable, although the movie hints that he believes he has other motivations.

I think it is implied that he is being compelled to get the stones, via the scene where he starts bleeding from talking with the disembodied voice
He actually says in the movie that he wants to create "destruction, disorder and chaos".
