Bandwidth Monitor for the Whole Network

So I've just graduated and moved home and had to leave behind my beautiful fiber connection to the family's shared comcast. usually, it's not too bad, but sometimes I will get massive lag spikes for a good period of time. I've determined that either someone's computer is infected and is occasionally sucking up bandwidth, or my family is lying about downloading things. Either way, I want to figure out where the problem is. I have a linksys router with DD-WRT on it, but little knowledge of linux scripts. Any suggestions for how I can best monitor the bandwidth of each individual computer that is connected?

Is this a problem for you or a problem for them? If whoever is paying for the internet claims they aren't downloading anything, then I would not try to monitor their bandwidth and prove them wrong. Maybe someone lied because they were downloading porn; it's best just not to know.

That does not answer my question and is irrelevant. This is a problem for everyone on the network as we keep having pretty bad slowdown across the board. So we'd like to know what's causing it, specifically which machine is causing it.

at what points in the day is this happening roughly?

what kind of pings do you get from google normally and when this is happening?

you could use a program like wireshark to capture packet data and see if a specific computer is sending a fuckton of data to some ip, but probably not the best solution since usually I can barely make heads or tails of whats going on with it

Best bet would be to get adaware and malwarebytes on each computer and let them do their scans, see if anything comes up, clean it, and see if it solves the issue.

Otherwise your area might just be getting hit hard at certain times of the day causing the massive slowdown

edit: also during the slowdowns, do a test at speedtest.net and see if your speeds drop significantly

If you suspect bittorrent usage, you can check the number of active IP connections on dd-wrt's router status page. If you see a large number at some random ports, that may indicate someone is torrenting something.

You can set something up like Untangle (http://www.untangle.com/), it's free (lite version) and should be simple to configure.
