My wife got me the new hardcover of Hickman's The Nightly News. I had never read it and man...amazing stuff. Plus great backmatter. Can't wait to see more of his Image books done in hardcovers like this.
So, I picked up Six Guns #1-3 on Wednesday, and found it to be a really cool, modern-day western. You've got a lawman, an outlaw, a bounty hunter, a gunslinger, and a disgraced superhero, all working to achieve their own goals. Sometimes those goals converge, leading to team-ups between the cast, and sometimes they're directly opposed. The one thing they all have in common, is that they've all been drawn to the mythical country/cesspit of San Diablo, and they all want to get the Hell out as soon as possible.
One thing about the writing, is that Andy Diggle's working in very broad archetypes. The lawman literally wears a white hat. The outlaw has a sense of honor, and decency. The gunslinger wants revenge on the men who murdered his brother. The disgraced superhero was set up by nefarious forces she sought to unseat. And the bounty hunter's just trying to finish this one last job, so he can get out of dodge. Despite this, he manages to make them all interesting and compelling, using the archetypes as a shorthand to more quickly establish the characters, and then quickly moving along with the story. If anyone was wondering where Diggle's mojo went after he came to Marvel, wonder no more; it's all in here.
It doesn't hurt that Davide Gianfelice's art is brilliant, highly skilled, and packed with character. All the protagonists have different silhouettes/body types, making them instantly distinguishable and intriguing. He handles action just as well as he does quiet, contemplative moments, and he draws jets and cars as well as he does people. And then all that's filtered through artists like Cully Hamner and Brian Stelfreeze, to get a bold, cartoony style, that never detracts from the serious stuff happening on the page.
If you're looking for something fun and different, or just waiting for the new season of Justified to start, like me, then give this a go. It's a hoot.
From Six Guns #2; we meet Matt Slade, bounty hunter.
I love the little cinematic introductions we get to all the characters in this series, and this was my favorite. I hope Matt sticks around and gets used in the Marvel U later. I'd like to see more of his no-bullshit approach to capturing superpowered bounties.
From Six Guns #3; the Two-Gun Kid lives up to his name.
I really like that third panel. Everything's just so well-rendered. I could see another artists forgetting little details, like the way you can see Two-Gun's sole on his shoe, or the way his shirt's slipping down a bit.

You mean Broo? Yeah, he is. Fun character too.
But damn if WatX isn't one of the best books I read every month. So. Fucking. Awesome.
And I'd probably say the same for Daredevil, but I read all my team books tonight and saved all my solo books for tomorrow.
!!!
And the fifth one comes out January 11 according to DC's official website.
Just like I guessed, Daredevil was amazing again!
Damn, Batman just keeps getting better, and Wolverine and the X-Men may be the best thing Marvel is releasing now.
