alright i'll keep that in mind while i play. i'm real weary about hybrid builds. in Demon's i just went for the minimum so that i could farm with soulsucker and have a spell as an initiator or against bosses weak against certain magics. that strategy still going to be a viable one in Dark or am i kidding myself?

no, they greatly buffed the stat requirements for spells and miracles

however, the new class of magic called pyromancy can be used without any stat investment, although it is lacking in long range options

I've had a real resurgence of my Demon's Souls addiction lately, the one thing I've noticed is a real lack of areas where I can find a blue phantom to help; like in several days of playing, I've seen zero. I'm wondering if I'm forgetting some game mechanic that is required for them to show up, or if the game is just old and there are few players on the servers.

Is there a way for me to see how "active" the game is on my platform (PS3)? I still see messages and the normal phantoms from blood-stains, but for all I know, they could be stored on the server indefinitely if there are not new ones to take their place.

i think the game is just old and no one is playing it. pretty much played it nonstop over the weekend and was never invaded. that's never happened before. i usually get invaded forcing me to Evacuate out and retry the area. i really should play offline...

I was just reading the wikidot for Demon's Souls and saw the following
    Bridging Between Worlds

The ghostly white figures you sometimes see moving through the world are an indication of other players in parallel worlds adventuring in the same location as you. You can bridge across to these parallel worlds to join another soul, for good or ill, using different colored Eye Stones.

I still see these guys every so often, it's a wiki, so I'm not sure that it's accurate that those ghosts are close to "real-time" - if they are though, that would mean that I can at least look for them as an indication others are playing currently

my bad, i made it sound like there's no one at all playing. should have said there just aren't as many people playing it right now. i think me not getting invaded is a prime example of that. though, now that i mention it i'm going to get invaded like a dozen times tonight while trying to run through Latria Tower.

as far as the white ghosts, i think they are really close to real-time.

Dark Souls did bloodstains and white phantoms worse than Demon's Souls, apart from phantoms resting at the same bonfire as you. Sort of a shame.

    How so?

Because Demon's Souls wasn't P2P, you could see ghosts from everyone in your region of the game who was online at the time. The ghosts were also far more vibrant - bright red and white for bloodstains and spectres respectively, rather than the rather muted blue outline in Dark Souls. I also believe that you can only see the armour a Dark Soul phantom is wearing if they're in human form; if they're hollow you can just see their weapons.

So I'm done exploiting Darkwraiths for their Rank 2 swag.

What's next: Forest or Sunlight? (Are any others even worth it?)

Darksun lvl2 for miracle - after you get miracle you can betray it and kill the boss and get the sunlight blade miracle as well.
    Forest lvl 3 for ring.
Sunlight lvl 2 for miracles (one of the miracles requires end boss soul)

not that you can use it after leaving the covenant

Fire is always a good option if you're willing to brave the Catacombs to get it. If not, just upgrading it to +10 and then later to Lightning could work

You'll get a spear in Sens that will serve you well until you decide what path you want to take your uchi.

Finally got to pick this up again yesterday for a bit. I found myself back at the fire you start out at after the intro level. Glad to see the fire still gives me 10 flasks! I have no idea if its the right place to go or not, but I went right back to those fucking skeletons that killed me for 2hrs and I introduced them to the Zwielender!!! .......given, I still died like 3x, but I finally killed the 3 Skeletons with 1 Big Skeleton.......then my girlfriend needed me to drive her to the store. Dammit.

    But I'll be back......that's right........I'll be back!!

  • KarlKarl Registered User regular
I keep seeing that the plot is quite hard to pick up. How bad are we talking?

Is it kinda vague or FF:XIII style "what the fuck is happening, I don't even know"?

  • ShenShen Registered User regular
The story is dealt out in a very piecemeal fashion. You can decipher parts of what's going on in the wider world through NPC conversations and item descriptions, but it's still very much left to you to figure out what the nature of your quest is and come to your own conclusions.

It never pulls an FFXIII where Suddenly, Robot Space Pope! though.

Question for you guys regarding Gwyn:

I have one free ring slot (next to Havel's Ring)....Should I be going with Ring of Steel Protection or Ring or the Flame Stoneplate Ring for Gywn?
He kills me so fast I can't tell which one is helping more

I would go the dark wood grain ring, if you have it

  • initiatefailureinitiatefailure Registered User regular
I'm currently using the ring of favor and protection... so I'm basically stuck with one ring option until the benefit of taking that one off is greater than the cost of doing so.

We'll see if that happens. I'm constantly afraid of accidentally hitting square while over it in the equip screen.

Unfortunately I ruined my chance at getting that this play through. I have East Wood Grain Ring though (AKA the "paperweight").
I didn't realize that Shiva and his bodyguard don't come back after you see them in Blight town; at least, they didn't for me

Would Green Blossoms be worth it as a poor man's substitute here?

If you want to cheese him, get a long spear and play ring-around-the-rosie with him around a pillar.

Use the ring of parrying and riposting his ass like a boss. The window for parrying his attack is seriously like 12 hours long. You can practice on the black knights on the way there if you need to.

I did but they we're no longer there. I even switched covenants and then back to the Forest Hunters to see if they would return. I really wanted that ring, hopefully I can grab it on NG+ soon.

Been taking a break for this since before the patch, now I've decided to take a break from Skyrim and Batman and get back to some PVP. Did they adjust weapon scaling with the patch? If so what are the break even points for straight + weapons vs going elemental ? Specifically at what strength does a +15 claymore beat a +5 lightening claymore and what str/dex does a +15 Balder Longsword beat a +10 fire Balder Longsword?
Im using a +5 BKS now and am ready to finish out my build, just trying to decide which way to go.

try this for the exact stats: http://sites.google.com/site/darksoulstats/dark-souls-calculators/stat-planner

but, in general, you want between 30 and 40 dex or str with a weapon that gets at least b scaling and an enchantment to use on it in order to beat out elemental weapons

The flame ring only helps with his grab of death attack. The physical one will shave a few damage off everything else.

I rebeat the game a week or so ago and I was surprised to find Gwyn hard, my first playthough he was a joke. I eventually gave in and did it the really easy way. Now I feel dirty.

Break even points are pretty much impossible to calculate because there are so many factors.

It's really hard to calculate break even points what with how defenses in Dark Souls work. Generally speaking, a lot of one damage type is better than that same amount split between two damage types. Throw in different attack types (Normal, Slash, Pierce, Strike) and elemental resistance and the break even point will vary from enemy to enemy.

I will say that I'm rather liking my Murakumo+15 on my Str/Dex hybrid character. Similar speed and stamina drain as a Claymore but a little more damage & reach.

I'm using a +15 Uchigatana with Great Magic Weapon + Oolacile's Catalyst, and it mows down enemies pretty damn quick. Seems to work fine for PVP for now, even though I only have 20 DEX.

If you have any gold pine resin use it on your weapon, the titanite demons are weak to it.

Titanite demons are actually pretty easy, given their moves are very telegraphed. The key is having a shield with good stability and plenty of stamina. When you see them jump up, don't roll, just raise your shield and back away from them, don't stop until they land. When you see them raise their arm over themselves and pause, circle around to the back, since that's pretty much a guaranteed one-hit kill. All other times, just keep your shield raised and circle around their left armpit to the back if possible. That's a blind spot where they have problems hitting. Get one or two hits in and never over-commit yourself.

any advantage to starting a female character over a male or vice-versa, like in Demon's Souls there were those gloves that gave chicks more souls but guys couldn't equip them?

Males look silly in female armour, females look fine in male armour. There aren't any restrictions though, so feel free to roll whichever.

That's kind of what I was doing. I don't think I have enough stamina. Sometimes I survive that jumping kill when shielding, and sometimes I don't. It's a real kick in the balls. Using that exact strat, I get him down to around 1 or 2 hits, and then I'll hit a piece of debris, get stuck and he'll do the three swipe, and then jump and kill me. All really quickly and I have no chance to move. Happened to me TWICE! Game got shut off after that.

    Maybe I"ll try again tonight.

Get to the back end of the chamber, where the stairs slope down. If you get halfway down the stairs while keeping him on the flat, most of his strikes won't connect. And, as others have said, just wheel around under his left armpit and hit once or twice, never letting your stamina get too low.

Personally, whenever I see him raising up to do that two-handed strike I get the fuck away. No way will I risk being staggered after a hit like that.
