It's funny that Justice is qualified to train heroes, but the New Warriors were poser hacks who got everybody killed.
There's just something about a guy both named Justice and wearing the stereotypical hero costume, but simultaneously (and intentionally) lacking the strength of presence to merit either that makes me feel like he's just there to be humiliated.
But maybe he'll smack Gauntlet for turning his dead friends into an insult, and earn some respect in the process.

Not to sound rude...but are you fucking me around? Why are all of the trades named after family sitcoms?

So, in The Initiative... are we to take it that those who fail their training and cannot be "neutered" are to be killed, much like how police attack dogs that fail their final exam are put down?

I dont think so, it seems more logical they would just shunt them off to the N-Zone prison.
This whole Initiative thing is really doing a great job convincing me that all my concerns and fears over the SHRA were unjustified.
No it's not. :v:
Agreed. This was the most Naziesqe thing I think I've ever seen. I said I'd give it at least one issue... and I did. But I don't think I can take a whole series of this, it seems so vile.

Isn't that entirely the point?
I'd hate the title if it maintained illusions that the act was a good thing, even though we know it's not.

Maybe you ought to start to come to grips with the fact that not everyone - especially not everyone who doesn't bother to post online - agrees with you that SHRA is bad.
I -liked- The Initiative. Especially the surprise death.

See, I thought this comic was supposed to get past the "good vs. bad" side of the Civil War thing and just give us some fucking Heroes trying to do good work.
To me, throwing Armory into a pit with Emo boy without explaining to her what was going to happen is tantamount to accessory to murder... and that really isn't what I was looking for with this.
That, and the constant comparing and berating of the New Warriors was just sad...
Can someone tell me what they liked about this book? Maybe I'm looking at it from the wrong angle.

Cloud 9...
Don't get me wrong, I liked all the new characters, I liked them a ton. But... the three I liked best were Armory, MVP, and Cloud 9... and they managed to fuck them all over by the end of the issue. And it's hard not to look at the people running this place as just being pure evil. I had enough of the pure evil crap after Civil War... I want to see something else now.

Ok I'll give you that but I guess they (the leaders) didn't come across that way to me, pure evil that is. I thought
Armory's washout
was a bit of a shock didn't seem like her fault so much however.
I'm still holding out hope though, it has potential and again I really liked Cloud 9

There is something to be said about the hard-boiled militaristic approach to what they're doing. Look at it like this, in the real world who would you rather have going to war for your country a regular joe that was given a gun or a highly trained individual that has had responsibility literally drilled into him. I know who I would pick.
Look at the man who is obviously the greatest hero to ever live in the Marvel universe, Captain America. Here's a guy that got put through the paces of becoming not just a hero but a soldier. Cap wouldn't be the same guy if he hadn't been trained in a militaristic and harsh environment.
I'm not saying that what happened in the "danger room" wasn't the sketchiest thing I've ever read (cuz it was) but I understand why and how it happened. I think we're SUPPOSED to hate The Gauntlet. His role is to inflict pain to the point where you either put up or shut up. In my opinion if you're not able to put up then you shouldn't be a hero.
My biggest concerns are the actions of Gyrich with his whole "this didn't happen bla bla bla" spiel. That, to me, seems to be shunting responsibility and is ultimately very hypocritical.
Right... I think my issue is mostly what happened in the Danger Room, namely how they take these kids they are supposed to be training and instead put them into an easily preventable situation that any brain dead moron with any kind of knowledge of what Emo's powers were could have predicted. Then punished the victim for their mistake. And their punishment also makes me question their integrity, and what will happen when someone whose poweres are more ingrained washes out...
Not to mention the fact that they treated the death like it was nothing... this isn't how heroes are supposed to act.
And all of this goes on during what is supposed to be compulsory service... not one of those kids had any choice in the matter.
Unless...
Does anyone here think they wanted Armory to wash out so they could get their hands on her tech?

I got the impression from Gauntlet's first speech that they already had their registration cards or whatever but if they wanted to use their powers in public and/or be "heroes" they had to go through the Initiative. So if lets say Cloud 9 didn't fly around like that they would have been ok with her going back to to be with her family.
War Machine's cool, at least. He melted faces in MvC1/2.
I didn't overflow with awe at the Initiative, but I didn't really dislike it either. I guess where it goes from here will determine how I end up feeling about it. I just hope no one else has arachnophobia because I really, really hate spiders - even in my comic books.

Hm... you might want to steer clear of Friendly Neighboorhood Spider-Man for a little while.

Out of interest: has any reference been made to the Ultimate universe from the 616 universe, or vice-versa? Can you draw a series of links that link the two together or are they, currently at least, entirely separate in continuity with no crossover?

Ultimate is a separate Universe. (i.e. it has a different number)

But what happens if your powers are pretty much the entirety of your being, like with Slapstick? There's no antidote for what he is.
