OK, recommend to me a book or two. I'm currently working on getting myself back into comics and I have room on my monthly list of books to add probably one or two more titles. I need some suggetions.
Adjectiveles X-men
Astonishing X-men
Thunderbolts
New Avengers
Ultimate Spider-man
The Ultimates
The above is what's currently on my list, I've thought about something out of the following:
Nova
Spider-man (not sure which adjective I want to tag onto the beginning)
EXiles
New Excalibur
to add to the list but I'm not sure, any suggestions on this list or even new additions would be super. Thanks.
X-Factor over New Excaliber (although I'm a big Juggernaut fan, if you must have New Excalib, drop adjectiveless, X-Factor is way better then both of them).
Amazing should be your spidey... it's sort of the marquee Spidey title.

So I want to get some Spiderman stuff. The Ultimate collections look good, even though I don't really like some of the villain redesigns. Are there any good Spidey graphic novels/collections out there?
Ultimate is by far the best Spidey in a long long time. I have the entire run and it's still going strong 109 issues later.
If you want a good non-ultimate Spidey story I can't reccomend Kraven's Last Hunt nearly enough, there's an amazing amazing hardcover for it that is one of my most favorite things.

I would stay away from Exiles and New Excalibur.. if you want more X-books, X-Factor, Uncanny, and New are all better than those two. As everyone else has said Runaways is great.
Amazing is the best of the 3 regular spidey titles but its nowhere near as good as Ultimate, if you like New Avengers I would reccomend Mighty Avengers as a companion book.
My other favorite books right now are Captain America and Immortal Iron Fist. Also World War Hulk looks like it could be spectacular.

What is it that sets X-factor above New Excalibur, Exiles and even Adjectiveless? I was never a fan of Guido or M in their respective books in the past, and everyone else looks to be new blood. Whereas I'm a big fan of Jugs, AoA Morph, Sabertooth, Mystique and Iceman.
Eh, I plan on getting the newest X-men TPB that's due out soon anyway (Supernovas, or maybe Blood of Apocalypse), so I'll just see what I think I suppose.
And yeah, I figured I'd be getting Amazing Spider-man anyway, I just needed to do some wiki-search on why in god's name he sometimes had a blonde goatee and sometimes didn't. But that has been solved. Plus I wanted to get an opinion as to where it's come since the mid-90s (I stopped buying right before the clone-saga)

X-Factor is written really well. And every character on the team is an established one. Prettymuch only the bad guys are new. Also, you get updates on the author's family, and even the letter page is cool.
What is it that sets X-factor above New Excalibur, Exiles and even Adjectiveless?
The writing.
Although Adjectiveless is way way better than Exiles and New Excalibur too, its just X-Factor is even better.
It also depends on what you like. Between X-Factor and adjectiveless, do you like balls out hyperactive superhero slugfests? (adjectiveless) Or do you like character driven stories featuring superheroes with a noirish flavor? (X-Factor)

I picked up Superman Confidential #1 when it came out and I think I was tired at the time so the kryptonite stuff confused me. Then last week when I was buying all the stuff I needed, I picked up #2,3, and 4. Holy crap it's so good I love you Darwyn Cooke
So. The Silver Surfer is coming up a lot at the moment (for obvious reasons). What's he like as a character? I know next to nothing about him, aside from what he does (herald of doom, or somesuch). Anyone reccomend a good place for me to start?
...I dont really even know what his powers are? Aside from pulling off the concept of a "surfer" quite well considering how lame it could have been...

Yeah know, it does seem sort've fitting for Doom to have a Herald. I could see him doing it.
As for the surfer, his power is the Power Cosmic. i.e. Don't fuck with him. He can do pretty much whatever he feels like. If you are looking for a recent place to start, try Annihilation and the Silver Surfer books that lead up immediately to annihilation. And the heralds of galactus books. So thats like 12 issues right there. It'll give you a pretty good idea of what he can do and who he is.
Does Walkyboy think they invented the Silver Surfer for the movie or something?
If you check the newspost I think Willis says something like, "No amount of CGI will make this idea not be silly." I think you should just take the comic at face value; a silver naked guy on a surfboard is, when looked at in the absence of all the cool stories and awesomeness that the Silver Surfer's been a part of, an inherently silly concept.
I'm pretty sure the author's at least passingly familiar with Marvel comics since he does enjoy the Marvel Legends toys.
Welp, picked up some Exiles today and I gotta say, you guys were right, there -has- to be better books out there than this. The art's good, I love the characters, but my god is the writing subpar at best. Does anyone know when/if the next writer is taking over?

JLA 9 confused the hell out of me. I just needed to say that.
The entire series has been maddeningly disjointed.
Glad I'm not the only one feeling it. I went back and read 1-7 to catch up to this JSA x-over but I'm utterly lost. Whats up with the talking Apes? Who were the 3 guys they showed in that one panel? What is up with these rings?
I really like JSA and enjoyed everything about it but JLA is just madding.

The talking gorillas are in Gorilla City.
The big white ape is the Ultra-Humanite. Not sure who the other two are, though. The purple one made me think of Despero, but he looks different.
The rings are Legion flight rings.
Really, it just sounds like you're not familiar with the DCU
yeah, Gorilla City is an established part of the DCU. They are good guys for the most part except for Grodd.
These people they are looking for are all from the future, they are members of a team called the Legion of Super Heroes, every member is granted one of those rings.
The 3 guys in that panel are left to right:
Degaton: time traveling Nazi and long time foe of the JSA. He is "out of phase" with time, which makes him physically intangible and allowshim to move through it freely. He can see into the near future of whatever time he is in, allowing him to predict his enemies moves before they happen. However, Hourman's powers tend to screw with his future vision and also allow him to be physically hurt.
The Ultra-Humanite: A Superman villian who was a mad scientist, he discovered a way to transplant his brain into a new body. He has changed bodies a number of times over the years, he is currently in that gorilla body.
Despero: an alien JLA villian. He is strong enough to fight Superman, he has powerful telepathic abilities, and he can possess the bodies of other people.
Keith: I know the fin is weird but I am going to assume thats who it is until told otherwise cause I can't even begin to guess as to who else it might be.

Did you pick up the latest issue or the first trade?
The first 30-odd issues by Winick are largely good, as well as the first twenty or so after he left.
It's around when they start talking about the "Timebreakers" that things start getting really stupid.
There's been no change in creative teams announced for Exiles as far as I'm aware.
TP is right, the Winnick issues were good, but it's been pretty terrible since then.
No one but me and Geebs talk about it on here for whatever reason but as far as X-books go Brubaker's stuff (Deadly Genesis and Uncanny) is awesome stuff, especially if you're an old school fan.

I got the newest 5 issues, completing the arc that just took place.
It wasnt so much the content that bugged me, its the flow/time and interaction between characters.
I dunno how to explain it, but it just bugged the hell out of me, especially after reading the first Astonishing X-men TPB the night before.

I've heard of it, and of the "color comics", but just in passing.

But, still, get Exiles.
Seeing as I have Dark Victory and The Long Halloween, seeing Loeb's name up there sold me.

Then X-Factor and Uncanny.
Then right below them adjectivless and New X-Men.

This comic confuses me.

What I'm "thinking about" is what on Earth the joke here is supposed to be.

That's pretty much it I guess. I'm way more familar with Marvel than DC but I'm trying
The DCU Despero is red/pink and his headfin is more like a mowhawk than a crown
The DCAU Despero is purple
These people they are looking for are all from the future, they are members of a team called the Legion of Super Heroes, every member is granted one of those rings.

It definitely took me more than the usual amount of thinking to wrap my head around all of JSA #9.
I love Grodd.

i hate when books come out in hard cover
it makes them harder to read
Absolute Long Halloween.
Unless you're a pre-adolescent T-Rex whose arms can't handle the extra weight of sturdier stuff, I'm not sure I follow.
