Will new laptop hard drives work in older laptops?

The HD in my many year old Sony Vaio finally blew and I want to replace it.

The one I took out is a 5400 SATA Hitachi Travelstar, 100 GB. All the ones sold now are SATA 3 and much larger. I don't need anything more than a small 100 or 200 gig drive. I will be reinstalling XP Pro once I get it as I have no spare 7 or Vista keys. The laptop is from whenever Centrino Duo chips were hot stuff and when the Vista machines were just coming on the market.

Will something I buy work or do I need to find someone who sells old drives?

    they'll work just fine.

you may also want to look at a ssd (solid state drive), it will give your laptop a bit of a speed boost.
