...Does anyone know of a half-decent, free 4X strategy game that I'd be able to run on a gutless little HP Notebook? I'm aware of Freeciv, but I don't much care for it (it's a little too similar to the original Civ for my tastes).
Neptune's Pride looks neat, Henroid - thanks for the link. But no, it's not what I'm looking for. I don't really like multiplayer-only games; something with a pretty simple single-player campaign was more what I was after.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I'll tell ya what will work beautifully -- Master of Orion 2. And Good Old Games sells it (and part one, which hasn't aged well in my opinion) for $5
YES! Good recommendation. SE V and SE IV are great. Steeper learning curve than MoO but a great step up if you're looking for complexity and versatility. Any netbook could handle an SE game, even V.
Also...Malfador's site is so awful and hasn't changed in all these years. Glad they are focusing their efforts on their products but...MINE EYES!

It's not free but it's only a few bucks at Steam.
