That is breaking news. I had no idea Rick Perry still had supporters.

Something's gotta be holding that hair up.

Mr. Romney's answer appears to be that voters want to keep hearing about him and his management résumé. Voters don't want one man's story. They want someone who understands how the next 10 years can produce an American economy that offers the opportunities for them that the 1980s produced for Mitt Romney.

About time. Even Bachman figured it was a good idea to just leave before him.

I wonder what his chances are that Romney would consider him for the VP spot.

Romney didn't win Iowa. Santorum won by 34 votes. Romney calls this a tie.

That's the crazy thing. The Iowa GOP declared it a tie. They're so corrupt it's just like a comedy routine.

    From TPM:
The rationale for calling this a tie, according to the Des Moines Register, which has the story as an exclusive, is that 8 precincts’ numbers are lost permanently and will never be certified. So in practice it’s a tie, too close to call, etc. That of course probably applies to pretty much all recount type elections — Bush v Gore, maybe Franken v. Coleman, etc. The vagueries of the process itself is too imprecise in some sense to tell you who ‘won’ in some Platonic (the other sense of the word) sense. But in normal elections where the people holding it aren’t deeply invested in not letting one guy win we have a name for that kind of situation — Rick Santorum won.

Of course, it’s unlikely to do Santorum much good at this point. And he probably just was never a good enough, or viable enough, candidate to have truly shifted his fortunes even if it had come out on caucus night. But it’s worth speculating how the news would have affected Romney’s momentum. A win is a win, as the state GOP of Iowa seems to have a hard time now accepting. And even though it was razor close, Romney came out of Iowa with a win. And after a rout in New Hampshire he had two ‘wins’. And together those shifted where the race was pretty decisively by mid-January, finally forcing a lot of Republicans with Mitt-commitment issues to get on board.

    That's just nuts.

How rich is Newt? What would be your guys' estimate?

    40 million, as a guess.

I dunno, I kinda got the impression that he had frittered away most of his money. If you need half a million in credit at Tiffany's, even 40 million won't last long. That would also explain why he randomly decided to run for president again- to get more money.
"Celebrity Net Worth" says he's worth 20 million, though.

If he's running to make money and doesn't want the job, what will his EJECT button be if it starts to look like he's actually going to win? Will he anonymously leak a story to the Press that he's having an affair and needs to bow out of the race to sort things out? Will he lie and say he has developed a cancer?

Oh he won't drop out of the race if he gets the nod. That's just gravy for him.

I am assuming a majority of Perry's flock will instead opt for Newt - or is Romney the second choice for a majority of them as well?

Edit: Actually, according to Silver (and, therefore, to reality), Gingrich has been leeching of Perry so much already the effect is marginal.

Texas isn't precisely up for grabs, so he doesn't bring anything electorally to the table, and the only thing he adds as far as his CV is concerned might theoretically be "stupidest man nominated for Vice President since Dan Quayle."

I've got my fingers crossed that Romney will pick him anyway, but I'd think even Hillary Clinton would have a better shot at getting onto that ticket.

If you were still planning on voting for a flame-out like Rick Perry as of today, you don't actually have a second choice. You're going to ride that burning plane through it's death spiral until it explodes on impact in a corn field.

Perry's going to finish out his current term as governor and retire, hoping that his embarrassment of a campaign doesn't hurt book sales and speaking fees.

(I don't think he has announced plans to not run again for governor, but I don't expect him to)

Good, Newt is back on the not-Romney train this week and with Palin and Perry's endorsement... Romney will still be the eventual nominee.

I'm skeptical the WSJ doesn't remember the crisis in the 80's. They're News Corp's lackeys now so them lying to the public wouldn't surprise me in the least. I guess they're on the Romney train.

I would think a party that is so concerned with election fraud would have super-tight control over elections they run themselves.

I love how they all say "pensions are so outdated!". Yeah they got outdated cuz in the 80s taking over companies to loot their pension funds was standard practice a-holes

How in fuck's name do you lose eight districts worth of votes in the year 2012? If this were any state other than Iowa heads would be rolling.

I work at an ABC affiliate.

Newt is in some serious trouble tonight.

Dateline interview with the ex-wife will air.

Here's the tip of the iceberg:

    http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/exclusive-gingrich-lacks-moral-character-president-wife/story?id=15392899#.Txg51qWiGSo

Highlights include him divorcing her right after her Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis (and you'll remember wife #1 got the boot after cancer), and the fact he wanted an open marriage.

Yeah I'm at a loss as to how 8 votes was enough for Romney to win, but 30 is now suddenly "look its a tie" Sure Romney wins the nom anyway, but thats just damn silly.

Also Romney find some fucking slacks, that whole workshirt and jeans man of the people look is awful and you should feel awful.

I will do my best - I actually saw it for the first time EVER last night, and was shocked by how many people I love are in it. It's looking pretty good to be renewed at the moment - promotions still getting a steady stream of stuff.

But back on topic: Hahahahahahaah indeed. 2 minutes to Rick Perry's announcement!

It might be tied to the discovery that they lost about 50 times as many votes as the margin.

So much amusement at the "Santorum leads by 34 votes but we won't ever know who won".

  • PreacherPreacher Registered User regular
I'll be surprised if that interview does any damage to Newt, if anything it could be seen as the "lamestream" media going after one of the GOP faithful because he might hurt The chosen one barack HUSSEIN obama. Not like it'll matter Romney's the nominee I know that, you know that, even Newt knows that. So will we find out that Romney paid her directly to "destroy" newts career, or will that just be the assumption.

Goddamn is Perry eerily similar to Dubya. He even sounded like him in the concession speech.

I know Im late to the party with this, but I just have to say...

I have no idea if it's totally legit, totally legal, totally harmless, and means nothing...

but YEARS of watching Mission: Impossible, various spy movies, Burn Notice, reading thrillers, and basically any action packed hunt for the bad guy I've experienced in any form have taught me one thing.

If you have money in the Camen Islands you're a bad guy.

fivethirtyeight looks at where Perry's supporters will go.

In summary, Romney gets 1, Gingrich already got 1 this week, Santorum gets 1. I think that leaves 1 left who will flip a coin between Paul and 'other', but probably will oversleep and not make it to the polls anyway.

4 votes was all he was going to get in South Carolina anyway, right?

I wish we could track these people and verify what they ended up doing later because I think Nate's wrong. The poll he based his estimation on doesn't allow for the possibility that a sizable percentage will simply opt not to vote.

Which only supports romney more, he's got a consistent voter base and he's only going up in national polls. Republicans are good little sheep, they do what fox news says to do and romney's polling reflects that post NH.

A significant amount, sure. Not all of them. The ones overwhelmed with apathy and more independent minded could stop participating, like Democrats who were less enthused with Kerry.
