"Well, that's what I'm here for." The mercenary turns back to the other soldiers and waves an arm. The group starts to detach from the house and follow the man. Apparently he was acting as some sort of unofficial leader for the guys who stayed outside? It must have been his overpowering charisma that led them to put him in charge.
"'Scuse me, Al, but they recognize me from up front; comes with bein' as big a man as I am. You, meanwhile, was sneakin' and cavortin' about with somebody I didn't catch, talkin' about a lot of blood and that you should double back or something. Now start tellin' the whole truth, or I'll stick yah again."
Macia leads. "Their boss' heavily armored. Lieutenant's a mage, or a magic user anyhow." She leads the mercs to the outer outskirts of town, and steps into a clearing. A lump stirs. "Twelve to twenty targets, counting their brass." A scarred, scaled, leather-winged creature cranes his neck toward his rider. It looks like what you'd get if you smashed equal parts bat and lizard together, then spiced it up with some features from a falcon, then covered it in blue-green scales, and then tossed it into the World's Biggest Ball of Sharp Edges. Gyorsol snorts.
"Wake up, boy. Time to go to work."
The lizard gets up, then stretches himself out. He waits for Macia to get on. She does.
"The lowlifes we're after are to the east." She leans over her saddle and spits. "Careful out there, men. Don't want to get killed by a buncha bandits. 'D be embarrassing."
Orson betrays no emotion. "Indeed, I do believe I recognize this man." he half-truths. "Perhaps you'd also like to enlighten me on this "business proposition" with a woman, little Alan?"
Alan looks uncomfortable. "Well, I'm not the most informed on the subject, what the boss wanted." He scratches the back of his neck. "But she and her stupid little posse attacked us first. You understand?" He shifts from one foot to the other. "I swear this is not my fault."
Additional Positioning: a Recap
Macia and the other mercenaries are entering the Town, which is a combat area. (backup would probably help.)
Zia is outside and has just seen the group leave, but is probably close enough to hear/see what's going on in the Front of the building as well.
Orson, Allan, and Sardo are in the Front of the house. Erica and Grant are still Cellar-trapped.
"But you just said she turned down a business proposi-...and now she..." Orson sighs. "Take a deep breath, kid... imagine you've been through a lot, what with getting lanced and all. Who's this "boss" you're working for, what'd you get hired on for?"
Alan replies nervously. "The boss is Carver, same as always. He took on some work for some "worm" group, I don't know much about them. A couple of their guys are overseeing this thing, they haven't really told us much of anything, they just order us around and all. They wanted something from that woman and her group. She reacted poorly, we- they fought back, then decided to chase her down when she got away. The worms were the ones who ordered us into the town. They're assholes," he adds after a brief pause. "Well, most of them are. I swear, that's all I know."
"'Most of them'?" Orson raises a large, bushy eyebrow.
"So Carver's your boss...merc group? You guys have a name? Is Carver the mage or the fast armored fella that's been reported? Or are those two both with the worms? What kinda contract you guys under anyways?"
He smiles. "Lotta questions, I know. Take it easy, let me know if you want any repeated."
"I'll be right with you," Zia shouts at the Macia and the mercenary band. Overhearing the conversation going on inside the house, she pokes her head in and looks at Orson, grabbing his attention.
"It looks like the pack is already heading towards the town. I'll try to make sure that no one gets too badly hurt, but..." she pauses, her eyes focusing towards the large man in armor. "I'm concerned we may require some additional assistance"
She grabs a green ribbon hanging over the side of her belt and gathers her long, black hair into a ponytail, using the strip of cloth to hold it firmly in place. "You'll know where to find us." She playfully salutes the group with two fingers across the side of her brow, sighs, and sprints off after the dragon rider and her companions.
Sardo had just placed his haversack down and had started to rummage through it for some lunch. As he was half way through an apple when Macia announces that everyone is leaving. "Everyone's leaving us?" Sardo asks. "But they can't leave without us! They need us!"
Doing his best to pack up things and not ruin his spellbooks with food debris, Sardo throws his sack over his shoulder and runs after the retreating bodies.
i swear there will be something resembling a natural schedule once school starts for me again! Anyways.

Alan keeps talking, reassured by the cleric's relative sanity. "We don't really have a name, I guess? Carver's not here right now, this is just part of our group. He handles all the money stuff and contracting."
Everyone but Orson and Allan is in the Town area- they get a bit more time to wrap stuff up and decide where they're going, then we go straight to combat mode. If you want to refamiliarize yourself with the battle rules, now's the time.
"Tell them to hold out for a minute, we'll be with you soon." Orson calmly states to the fleeing mercenaries before turning back to Alan.
"Right, so... this little group of mercenaries you've had the wonderful luck of going against alone is about to go fight your little group of mercenaries, what with you occupying an independent town on the orders of some worm assholes of dubious motives. Plus we're being paid generously! The ultimate reason among sellswords, huh?" Orson raises his voice as if telling a joke, but he isn't laughing. He puts a firm hand on Alan's shoulder.
"We're going to have to do something about you. We're definitely keeping you away from any weapons and binding your arms and legs. You're a prisoner of an opposing company, and I really don't think you want to try running from both of us at this point."
Orson pauses to think.
"Way I see it, we've got two options, neither really fair.
One, you come with us, we keep you tied up in the backlines of this little skirmish. You help point out these worm fellas so we can kill them. Imagine without their employers watching more of your men will be inclined to flee, leaving more of my men alive, leaving more of BOTH of our men alive. If you're particularly helpful I may even share some of my payment with ya...and if my group loses...well...you'll be reunited with your coworkers."
or two, I hand ya off to a fella who I believe is an associate of the armored lady you mentioned."
Alan considers his options for a moment. "Shit, well. As generous and tempting as you make option two sound, I'm going to have to go with number one. Just... keep the big guy away from me, alright?"
Orson laughs. "The two Al(l)ans are going to have to keep each other such lovely company for a few more minutes outside, while I find some rope."
Orson waves them outside and goes into the basement once Alan can't see.
"Oy, you two! One of the mercs caught a fella with a sword, seems like swordsguy and an associate of his tracked Erica to this house to make sure she was dead. Grant, you mind helping the lady move? You guys probably want to hole up somewhere else, in case the other checks back.
Also, need some rope. Taking the prisoner with us as we attack the town. See any around? Maybe in that toolshed out back?"
"Wait a minute, you know who that armor lady he keeps talkin' about is? Well now things are starting to make sense."
Allan gives Al a hearty slap on the back that knocks him forward a few feet. "Don't worry, I'll watch you nice an' close. Long as you don't step outta line, you got nothin' to worry about."
"Great, great." Alan rubs his shoulder where the large man smacked him. "Great."
Cellar
Grant flings one side of his cloak to the side and rummages around in it, eventually producing a length of rope...with a large piece of metal sprouting three hooks at the end. "Climbing's a particular hobby of mine," he explains, sheepishly. "Go nuts. I think we'll stay here a bit longer. Stand a better chance of taking anyone down sans light than we would having a daytime three-legged race."
"Well...suit yourself." Orson produces a small survival knife from his side and, using his left hand, cuts off the metal piece with several careful motions, before cutting the entire length into two smaller pieces. It takes him a bit longer than one would expect.
Outside, after tying up the man's arms, Orson loosely ties around Alan's legs. "More just so we can tighten it quick when we get to the battle. Limit ya to hopping around and talkin, don't think I need to tell ya what happens if you shout to alert yer fellas of our approach. For now you gotta walk with me, 'less we can get you a ride on account of your condition of 'being stabbed with a lance' and all." Orson looks around the departing mercenaries to see if anybody that can accommodate a passenger remains.
"And yeah, we got ourselves a contract, big Al. Liberate the town, get paid, maybe run into our original employer while we're at it!"
Could probably just skip to the battle, Alan and Orson are getting there one way or another.
Allan and Orson make their way around the house. Meanwhile, three of the mercenaries at the town's gate notice the incoming group led by Macia. One runs off, presumably to warn the others. The remaining two grip their weapons and step forward.
There's no avoiding it: it's game time.

Took out the description parts of each enemy/ally statline, since they shouldn't be very important here. I think it's fairly clear who is who- but just in case: green is allies. Red is enemies. Blue is player characters- Sardo is at C2, Zia at C3, Orson at I3, the others are super obvious. I'll be controlling the allied units for the moment- but this is them acting at their own discretion. Someone with a good sense of authority could easily bark out some orders in their general direction.
Items listed after a character's statline are items they carry, but don't have equipped. The Orange text is that character's capacity skills: a way of me pointing out that this is a dangerous guy.
Everyone makes one move, then the enemy units go, then the allied units, then the player characters again. Remember: Forests are good cover (20 Evasion!), but count as moving through two spaces for everyone except Shock, who doesn't have to think about that stuff at all. Currently, everyone is on a Plain area, with no bonuses. And one last reminder:
...for Player characters, I don't need quite this much info, but I'd like you to headline in-battle posts with character name, current HP, Build, and the weapon that's equipped or used during this turn (you can't attack and then switch weapons, but vice-versa is okay.) A link to the character sheet might help too.
in whatever color. Then, make sure to include what area you move to and what you're doing! Of course, you should pretty up these posts a bit more than that, but I'm sure you guys know how to do that.
Probably moving to F3 and depositing Alan in F2, though I'll hold back on officially acting due to being a healer. Try not to get murdered too quickly here guys, might want to hang back in the forests and let them come to us.
Also pretty sure I know who the guy who doesn't belong is, but keeping quiet for now to give the chance to figure it out on your own :P
I've always been a proponent of abusing your first turn as the player if you can, so I was going to bum rush the two bandits with ranged attacks and hopefully send in melee that wouldn't get counterattacked due to being... well... dead.
Yeah, Cleric's my guess based on Grant saying the other team doesn't have a healer, restore staff just seals the deal on it being a non-threat. Who can even cause status effects among us?
Oh geeze, pirates AND myrmidons AND halberdiers AND mages all only have five movement. Yeah, offensive works as long as someone doesn't get too overeager and moves past the dead enemies into the second line's attack range. The people who finish off the front two will each eat one ranged attack (from the archer and hand axe pirate respectively).
Also tempted to goad terr into needless moving to E5 an see just how punishing pigeon will be for being foolish enough to put yourself in the path of a weapon triangle disadvantage and a mage on a low RES character.
That boss is going to be a bitch to kill if he doesn't move. Half-expecting Russo the axe-wielder to be in the house.
Don't think Allan can move in range of attacking anyone anyway. Not that it matters, Allan's got the "enemy magnet" ability so they should all come after him if they can. Think I'll probably move up to reinforce the primary group a bit, staying out of Mage range if possible.
Honestly the Mage is the only person that scares me. I'm willing to bet Allan can handle that Axeman, but probably not also the Mage.
It's encouraging that people are actually discussing strategy somewhat instead of just bein' all chaaaaaaaaaaaaarge

So I'm thinking I'll move Allan do D4. That should provoke both the axeman and the merc to attack him without pulling anyone else. That way he's also standing in front of the squishy archer. Thoughts?

ANNOUNCING YET ANOTHER FREAKING MECHANIC AND SOURCE OF EXTRA EXPERIENCE: MVP
As is, the experience system sort of discourages attacking first and stuff that doesn't involve actually finishing enemy units. So, at the end of a battle, we're gonna take a big vote on who was the most helpful as a team player, overall. (No voting for yourself.) And that player gets a good amount of bonus EXP. Sound good?
Seeing one of the guards start to flee to gather reinforcements, Sardo looks around and points to the man with the bow. "You there! What's your name? Right, that's a good name. Now, look, we've got to start moving. Between the two of us, we could distract those two bandits standing by the gate so our friends with the swords and axes and such can rush them while their busy worrying about us. So, what do you say? I know you don't want him in your face with that sword any more than I do."
The archer jumps a bit as the shaman addresses him, then mumbles something quietly. It's difficult to tell, but it sounded like it could have been "Caleb" ? He nods in response, readying an arrow a little slowly, but with careful precision.
Sardo's attack is a little quicker and more effective. His target doubles up for a moment as dark magic works its way...through his body, almost dropping his sword.
Macia takes in the battlefield. Four main threats: two Archers, a Mage, and a... Pegasus Knight? Yeah, a Pegasus Knight. Best first moves looks to be taking out he two mooks at the gate, then let that Lancer and the Shaman deal with the Mage. Mac isn't taking another face-full of lighting for a thousand bits.
"I'd appreciate it if one 'a you gentlemen handled that magic user." She cocks her bow. "Can't be a proper annoyance with him breathin'."
She steers Gyorsol to a spot a few dozen paces in front of the nearest axeman, slides a quiver into her crossbow, picks a soft looking spot of flesh, and fires.
Moving to C5, shooting Axefighter A, then moving to A4.
Rolled a 27 for the first attack and then a 68 for the second, if you need it.
Effective Speed 5 with Light Crossbow
Base hit + Skill = 106
Base crit = 6
Base damage = 15
"Uh oh, looks like they started without me! Time to smash some heads!" Allan plods off to rejoin the group, standing near Sardo to cover everyone as best he can. "Now then, I'll show these mercs how a Vallis Knight holds ground!" Readying his lance and holding out his shield, he prepares for an onslaught of enemy attacks.
Knight to E4, since D4 is now occupied and I'm still a bit nervous about that Mage.
Zia rushes to catch up with the group, finding herself surrounded by woodlands on the outskirts of the town. She breathes heavily, unusual given her keen physical shape. Anxiety starts to take over, as she realizes that today may be the first time that she has to kill another being. She stops dead in her tracks behind a mercenary with a bow, watching his conversation with a man she saw at the house, but she can't hear a word they're saying, and their gestures appeared extravagant yet sluggish. She watches the brave Shaman bolt forth into action, casting violent spells towards an approaching swordsman, and it fills Zia with courage. She closes her golden eyes, shakes her head, shivers, and opens with a concentrated glare, sword in hand. Eyeing the aforementioned swordsman, she takes the opportunity that the Shaman provided her, sprints forward, and strikes!
Move to D5, equip Slim Sword, and attack Swordsman A (D6)
Effective Speed = 9 (We don't get a bonus for having our equipment's weight be less than our build right?)
Base Hit + Skill = 100 + 5 = 105
Base Critical + Skill = 5 + 5 = 10
Base Might + Energy = 3 + 3 = 6
Rolls: 58, 46 (if needed)
I thought I could take out the swordsman, but literally after posting I realized that his DEF is probably higher than his RES, so whoop. And there's also that archer. Steel yourselves for the ensuing "arrow in the knee" jokes!
The axefighter reacts rather poorly to the crossbow bolt that sprouts from his shoulder, staggering back with a yell. [Axefighter A takes 11 damage! [7/18] [Macia gets 10 experience]
The swordsman gets it worse. He's barely upright when Zia hits him with one swift strike that sends him down... for good, from the look of things. [Swordsman A takes 4 damage and is Defeated!] [Zia gets 30 experience]
Allan stomps his way onto the field with no interference.

First and Second attack (if needed). (1d100=56, 1d100=17)
Effective Speed 4 with Flux
Base hit + Skill = 85
Adept on roll of 4 or less
Base crit = 5
Base damage = 14

Sardo's attack is a little quicker and more effective. His target doubles up for a moment as dark magic works its way...through his body, almost dropping his sword.
(Swordsman A takes 12 damage! [4/16])
Sardo gains 10 experience

Capfalcon, that was an excellent post, thanks for the math work and all! (This isn't necessary, but I appreciated it.)

I've been found out.

Rhapsody, there's no speed bonus for using lighter equipment. Posts look good, everybody!
EDIT: Well, apparently it's working after I refresh the page, albeit very slowly.
Edit: I may look for...alternative hosting methods in the future, if this becomes an issue. Remember, people, feedback = good!
As in, been watching it for ~3 minutes and still can't see the third row of the grid
Suuuuper sloooooooow.
