I live in the US. My friend lives in Australia. She just got a new iphone and we're wondering if we can facetime with each other and if it will cost money. We're both fairly broke (what with iphone ownership and all), so we need free!
Can two people who have iPhone 4s who live in different countries initiate FaceTime calls purely over Wi-Fi and talk internationally?
Yes! We got the mobile phone number of one of our friends in the UK, added it to our iPhone’s address book, and then tapped the FaceTime button on their address book card. The FaceTime session connected immediately and we were able to enjoy a nice chat between San Francisco and Scotland, without ever actually placing an international call.
It sounds like it should just over the internet for free (outside of the cost of your internet service of course, but nothing on top of what you are already paying).
Skype also allows you to use online video chat to pretty much anywhere for free. I don't know what skype functionality the iphone offers off hand though. It certainly works on a PC at least.
I've facetimed to the UK from the US several times, using iPads though. Uses the Internet, so there are no additional fees. I'd think it'd work fine to Australia, though I get the impression Australia is a bit weird w/r/to the Internet.
