- Very few (if any) added benefits for gold subscribers other than multiplayer. No freebies, discounts, special offers, exclusive downloads... basically, Silver people get everything Gold subscribers get, except for multiplayer.
How is this a drawback? If you want to play online multiplayer, you get gold. If you don't, you can stick with Silver and not miss much (early demos and the occasional freebie like the Heavenly Star Lumines Skin).
I think it would be much more of a drawback if Gold offered more tangible benefits besides just online multiplayer. People like me who have little to no interest in playing multiplayer online (playing with random people doesn't appeal to me and none of my friends own a 360) would be stuck with either missing out on the benefits we do want or buying a Gold account and feeling like we're wasting money because we're not using its major feature.
I'd rather pay the price of a single game per year to have a unified network (buddy list, invites, VOIP chat, etc..) than leaving it up to the game devs.

I'm very interested to see if MS's pricing model changes at all with Live Vista coming out here this year.
I think it was the IGN podcast that was talking about this exact thing this week. some interesting things.
from a development stand point they each have plus's and minuss.
I'm paraphrasing the podcast here, so bear with me.
like for example, clan support is nonexistent in live right now because Microsoft wont let developers do it. (cant have it trumping halo now can we.) The good parts though is that it makes for great ease on the developer, since they don't have to do as much work since the framework is pretty much all laid out across the games.
the PS3's online game for game is only limited by the developers imagination or funding. the openness also makes it a bit troublesome to port.
there were other things too... its like 4am so i dont remember atm.
Edit again: Gold does get demo's early sometimes. if only by a week.
Edit again: xbox360 pro + Background downloading.
i know it was comming to the ps3, but i heard it sucked, confirm/deny?
Konami is droping the MGS3 servers...granted, the online game was broken at best but....geez....Is this going to happen to Resistance or MGS4 eventually? I mean, occasionally I play older xbox games just for the hell of it and I'd kinda like to have that choice.
Before I get flamed, I want a PS3, I just want to hear people's thoughts on this.
You can pretty much count on it, especially for lower-profile games than the two you mentioned.
I thought the best part was reading the first comment:

Just a quick corrective note, GRAW 2 that comes out next week has full clan support. Saint's Row had it too.
I think we should add these to the list of cons for XBL:
- Very few (if any) added benefits for gold subscribers other than multiplayer. No freebies, discounts, special offers, exclusive downloads... basically, Silver people get everything Gold subscribers get, except for multiplayer.
- Limited Video Marketplace selection outside the USA.
- Microsoft Points are a con in and of themselves.
Actually gold members now get acess to demos and download trailers before silver members. Least the big ones, like the GoW trailer, and the crackdown demo.
Also I fail to see how microsoft points are a con. You have five different sets of points you can purchase, not hard to get the number you want/need.
They're a pain in the ass because the conversion is so weird. 1 point = 1.55 cents, therefore I have no fucking idea what 600 points is in real money unless I get out a calculator. Why not just use real currency?

I've found that using my credit card to get 'points' makes it a helluva lot easier to spend money. They're just points. They're not real!
Horse Armor for $2.55? I could get Two cheeseburgers and some fries for that. Fuggedaboudit.
With the PSN I know I'm spending $9. The taxes (the fuck?) show up on screen as well. I know what's being billed to my CC in CanuckBucks. It just makes more sense to me.

Ah, the joys of not living in the US. In the US, it's a very simple 400 points = $5 or 80 points = $1.
If I could have all the features of an xbox 360 with the games of a PS3 I'd reach nirvana
MGS4 and FFXIII? Lair and Motorstorm?
Those are the only "on Karf's radar" exclusives even being tossed around for the PS3 right now.
MGS4 (have to play this on release or not browse the internet until I get it to avoid spoilers), Heavenly sword (I'm a sucker for a good button masher), Lair, The next Ueda game, The next God of War, Resistance (I'm actually really hot for this game).
While for me the 360 only has Gears of War and Halo 3, and I had a borrowed 360 with Gears for three months and played the hell out of that one, so nothing else until Halo interests me.

You can't multiply by 1.5 without a calculator?
I know I can't.

Better to work out the large group costs, not each individual point. Most purchases fall into certain price groups, Live Arcade games for example;
400 points = approx £3.40 a game
800 points = approx £6.80 a game
Not too hard to remember really, but "real" pricing would be nicer. Here in Europe there are quite a few monies, might have something to do with buying "points" I guess. I wonder if the games were real money cost, what they would be sold at. £3.99 and £6.99 maybe? £3.49 and £6.99? I can't see them getting cheaper than that, so maybe points actually end up saving us cash!
A plus point wth XBL is the upcoming Live Anywhere integration across to your PC, Mobile and everythign else. When it's fully up and running, integrated with Games for Windows and Windows powered mobiles, it'll be really awesome.

Yeah, I would have made that a plus.
