The Great Big Thread of Death

I've been reading a lot of Marvel stuff lately, and two gems I happened upon were Hulk: The End, and Punisher: The End. If the titles weren't some sort of indicator, it basically offers up a story in which its characters buy the farm. With the recent announcement of Daredevil: End of Days....I wonder if these sort of scenarios are played out as frequently as Marvel does them. The Death of Superman aside (FUCK THAT), are there any worthwhile tales that you think are worth a read along these lines?

hulk: the end and punisher: the end are the only two worthwhile 'the end' stories marvel has done. the x-men ones are awful and looooooooong (like nine or ten issues? maybe more? claremont!) there was a fantastic four one i never read and one about the entire marvel universe (marvel: the end) with thanos, but i don't remember much else about it. basically, you might check out spider-man: reign, but you've got the good the end stories already.

If I remember right, isn't it considered in-continuity?

What can I say... Iran loves their crowbar wielding clowns... I think they had one on their flag until the early 90's.

But yeah, that was completely random. I didn't even know the Joker was interested in politics.

I was under the impression that all of Marvels "The End" mini series were alternate versions. They sound interesting though... I'd definitely like to pick up the Thanos one at some point.

If someone is going to end the MU it better not be a guy as goofy looking as Thanos. He looks bad ass when he's not dressed in that stupid blue and gold suit of his.

We should start a petition to get his suit changed. No one is gonna respect a universe killer who looks like that.

Sir yes sir! I've been meaning to, the art is just too jaw droppingly beautiful.

I'm looking foreward to the new Nova series. His new armor looks awesome.
The future is always in motion, difficult to see. Plus Thanos is Lady Death's lil buddy, she can bring him back probably somehow.

well, it still is. here's what happened, if memory serves. one day thanos destroyed the universe, then he remade it exactly as it had been before he destroyed it and now only he, death, and adam warlock remember it

i don't remember why he remade it though. maybe someone has the assist?

Alan Moore's 'Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?' is a pretty damn cool end story, though its canonical status is debatable.

It's not really debatable when it says in the opening that it's not.

To offer a dissenting opinion on X-Men: The End, it's pretty much 18 issues of classic Claremont awesome. It respects every era of X-Men continuity, plays with a lot of Claremont's favorite villians, addresses every dangling plot thread, and culminates in a giant-ass battle where literally everyone dies. And it's still not finished at that point.

Alan Davis is doing Fantastic Four: The End at the moment, and although the script/plot isn't great it sure is purty to look at. Why Marvel aren't chaining him to a desk to do a high-profile ongoing (just give him Excalibur and let him go nuts) is beyond me.

I love me some classic Claremont awesome, but oh god I hated this. I had to go back and re-read The Fall of the Mutants to get the taste out of my mouth. And then I started reading the Australia years again, which are awesome on sticks.

Runaways volume 2 number 18 had a really good death scene in it.
And I'm not just saying that 'cause I didn't like Gert. I loved the coloring on the page she died, with the fading out to just pencils, and the heartbeat going flat. Really powerful stuff.

I know this is kind of off topic, but, in what I'd call a rare occurance at best, I think Colossus' return is actually one of the most moving scenes I've seen in a while. The whole 'running through Kitty' thing, and his reaction when she tells him she scattered his ashes?

    If I weren't the testosterone-filled, puppy-kicking, overcompensating manly man that I am, I might've shed a tear.
