problem with Ubuntu + nvidia

I'm running ubuntu 10.04 (gnome) with nvidia x-server. I was trying to set up a second monitor on a separate X screen, which shouldn't be too challenging. The monitor was detected, but after I rebooted X to apply the settings, the system hung after login. Black screen, either pointer or spinning 'wait' cursor, nothing happening.

I've turned off the second monitor and restarted in failsafe graphics mode; the problem is I can't seem to alter the nvidia settings without enabling the driver, and as soon as I enable the driver, the system hangs again. Ideally obviously I'd like to simply be able to use the second monitor, but failing that I'd at least like to be able to return to my previous setup with x-server working as normally. I suspect I can fix the settings by editing the xconfig file manually, so I'll have a poke around and see what I can manage, but if anyone has any bright ideas in the meantime that would be great.

Edit: ok I got rid of the second screen manually, but I'd still like to be able to use it, so suggestions welcome.
