So. I just bought my first PS3. Are there some great JRPG's I need to play on this thing? I played Nier on the 360, so that's done and over. I'm not really very interested in WRPG's; I didn't like DA, I have Skyrim and Fallout on Steam, and we bought Uncharted with the PS3.

Also purchased are:
RDR
Resistance
Saints Row 2

And already on the list (for when I have $$$) are:
Sly Collection
Ratchet and Clank
God of War
Demon's Souls
3D Dot Hero's
Little Big Planet 2

    Valkyria Chronicles
    Eternal Sonata
    Shadow Of The Colossus/Ico HD
    Mass Effect 2
    Borderlands

Honestly, no, there aren't a ton of JRPGs for it. I can't believe PS3's version of Tales Of Vesperia never got a release in North America. That was a great JRPG. Also, ignore anyone who suggests FFXIII. It's terrible.

Which Uncharted did you buy? I suggest playing all three in order. They're ridiculously good.

Eternal Sonata I played on the 360 and never really got into it, Mass Effect I have on Steam, same with Borderlands.

We're going to do all 3 Uncharted games, picked up the first one with the console. Ah well, I still have other systems for JRPGS,

Check out the PSN. There's a ton of good games on there. Journey is one I'm particularly looking forward to.

Oh, and I did play FF XIII on the 360, I thought it was terrible. And I'm a huge FF fan. I may have shed a tear of frustration trading that bad boy back in.

Just tossing in another vote for Valkyria Chronicles. An excellent game, with some occasionally cheesy anime moments in the story.

If you like strategy rpgs, the Disgaea games are fun.

How do you feel about older games? Because if you haven't played it, the cheapest way to get Xenogears, for example, is through PSN, and it's definitely a great JRPG (even though it got rushed toward the end so the second disc is a little... different). In fact, there's probably quite a few games you could grab through PSN that fit what you're looking for. Other than that, I agree with the other suggestions thus far, and I'll see if I can think of any more.

Well, I've played most of the PS2 JRPG's on the PS2 back in the day. And the Dreamcast stuff, mmm Dreamcast. I have a PSP so I actually already own some of the PSN PS1 classics. I was hoping, but not really confident, that the PS3 had some hidden gem RPG's that I magically hadn't heard of.

I'll just pick up Xenoblade for my Wii in April because I'm too lazy to import and be happy with shooters and action games until then.

I feel like it's been a fairly weak generation for RPGs. : P

Funny (sadly?) enough, I think most of the best RPGs (of any type) this generation have been on the DS for some reason. I have no idea why all the awesome, innovative stuff in the genre is only on the DS... well, no, that's not exactly true. I guess it's because it's a lot cheaper to develop for it, so you get all sorts of games out of that. And they're portable, so you can take them anywhere. Unfortunately, the DS is also the least technically powerful platform of the generation, so there are plenty of downsides to that too.

Ah, yeah, forgot that caveat. The portables have seen a bunch of great RPGs. The consoles? Not so much.

Yeah, I guess it costs like a billion dollars to develop a console rpg these days.

There is a direct sequel to Final Fantasy 13, that supposedly addresses a lot of the stuff people didn't like about FF13, coming out at the end of this month. So maybe that'll be worth looking into.

Resonance of Fate is pretty good in the JRPG category. It's not a PS3 exclusive but if you haven't played it yet then that aspect doesn't matter much. Interesting battle system, confusing plot.

To be honest, the best JRPGs this generation have been on the 360, which were Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia both of which I highly recommend.

When someone asks for a jrpg, I don't really think of MMOs, though.

If you played the PS1/PS2 Metal Gear Solid games, you might as well get MGS4.

Yes, there's a shit ton of times you're watching instead of playing, but I just recently beat it and thought it was worth it.

No one mentioned it, but maybe the Yakuza games would be up your alley. I've only played a little bit of Yakuza 2 on PS2 and it seemed kind of neat. Sort of a hybrid RPG/brawler with other Japanese weirdness like managing a hostess club.

Yakuza 3 and 4 are on PS3. Maybe someone else can toss in their $.02 about them.

  • -SPI--SPI- Osaka, JapanRegistered User regular
Yakuza 3 is fantastic. Possibly my favourite game on the platform. I can't speak to 4, sadly haven't had time to play it yet, but I hear it's just as great. They appear on the surface to be open world crime games, but they're very much action RPGs.

Honestly, I recommend skipping Demon's Souls and grabbing Dark Souls instead. Dark Souls is just hands down a better game, and has a more vibrant community since it's newer.
