So in my latest game I have a tunnel that runs under the river. There is a large pit in the center of the tunnel that is spanned by a bridge. Directly next to the pit is another pit that I plan to use as a dump with atom smasher. It also keeps the enemies away from the fortifications that my marksdwarves will use to practice on whatever survives the fall (2 z-levels).
Now how should I trigger the bridge? By hand? Pressure plates?
A lever made with a masterwork mechanism connected to the bridge with two masterwork mechanisms will do the job quite nicely if there is an idle dwarf nearby.
Doesn't even need to be idle with the "Do Now!" modifier.

Welp, looks like it's time to redownload and play some dwarf fortress

I haven't played for two years, Dwarf Fortress probably accurately simulates immune systems, indigestion, and radioactive decay now. Pitchblende was in this game right? It has been awhile.

I wouldnt be surprised if at this point scientists look into dwarf fortress for the origin of dark energy because jesus fuck.

Got bored, decided to try adventurer mode! It was... interesting.
Holy shit is it hard to find things, I spent so long just looking for a second backpack. Also, inventory is a nightmare. I almost kind of had it figured out, but it won't even tell you how much total space it starts with, so you just keep having to try smaller stack sizes until it fits. Or maybe it just doesn't fit. Who knows!
Killed a couple of Badgers, some random wildlife. I had just killed a camp of Kobolds, and looted a second backpack and a bunch of bags, but was too far from town and got attacked by Bogeymen. Which, its not like they are something you can really fight against.

next month I think I will revisit dwarf fortress again. I wonder if dfhack is a bit more stable now? Makes me sad when the isometric view makes the game crash
I started up a Fortress with Meph's Tileset, but I think I need to find a new graphics pack. Smoothed stone walls and constructed block walls do not look the same. So either I have blotches of color messing up my walls, or they are the same color but look different :bigfrown:
I've been following a DF story called Roomcarnage. It's set in a super high threat climate (a volcano that constantly rains elf-blood) where anything that dies is raised in unholy life. The author has a great sense of style as well, so it's a super entertaining read.
New dwarf fortress version has added in tantrum spirals again, time to spin up new forts everyone, so we can all die in hilarious ways we did back in the 36x days.

@TheKoolEagle What changes were made to bring the spiral of fun back?

My understanding is alcohol no longer heals all sadness haha
The most relevant one is probably
Stopped inebriation personality alterations from being permanent
but there's also the whole new long-term memory system that means that you can't just spam nice thoughts from doors and stuff to reliably help them get over seeing their loved ones dying in front of them or whatever.

Well, they are withering because they aren't getting harvested, and then someone comes by to take out the rubbish. I checked and All Dwarves Harvest is on. Also, they will pick Plump Helmets to eat.

Huh, that's weird. I haven't seen that happen recently; if you want to Dropbox the save, I can take a look. The official forums will probably know if it's a bug.
My legendary carpenter just stopped working. I found out he's a patron of the arts and since there's are too many visiting bards and poets in my meeting hall..the poor guy drank till he died. His memorial says Urist McTavernkeeper killed him by suffocation.
A bit annoying how some dwarves really get scared for life from having seen goblin body parts. You guys are butchering puppies all the time what's a little goblin blood?
Also some dwarves don't seem to handle the stress caused by doing the things they want to be doing in order not to feel stress. Can't save everyone I guess.

I had to stop my game for a bit because I'm on vacation out of town, but I just had a were animal shred my early military force and a bunch of other dwarves. Can't wait to see all the emotional scarring.

Yeah. They ruined a few of my forts.
The trick is that they can't die of natural causes. So I stationed all the were creatures in a few block holding cell, and locked them in with a drawbridge on the same switch as the main gate. When something unfriendly came knocking, they got a closed gate but an open door to the greeting party of werethings. Good times.

My issue is always trying to effectively segregate the injured in time, and you always get a couple who weren't actually were, and then they die, and everyone is upset.

Individual jail cells - I mean, personal rooms - with lockable doors so you can seal them in - I mean, safety features for emergency use only.
Well, this thread made me reinstall yet again, I hope you fucks are happy.
After a few failed starts I've managed to make a reasonably successful fort. A grand waterfall falls through the circular shaft of the main chamber, the smiths fill our chambers with iron armor and gold statues, but the tide seems to be shifting.
The problems started with one of the monster slayers I'd allowed to stay in the fort. To my best knowledge it was the horror of the monsters and corpses he encountered in the caves that drove him over the edge, but that is mostly speculation. Soon a dwarf lay dead at his hands, and two more wounded. It took me some time to figure out what to do about it, but eventually I managed to use the justice system to beat the guy to death.
Ever since, dwarves have been slowly sinking into depression. Many of them are deeply stressed, with tons of "horrified" notes in their thoughts from seeing the corpses of trolls, elves and other monsters. Every now and then one of them throws a tantrum, hurting themselves and others, furthering the slow downward spiral.
I guess part of the issue lies in the fact that I'm allowing basically all my dwarves to play around in the cavern layer. I've secured a fair part of it using cage traps and soldiers, giving my dwarves a steady source of elk bird and draltha meat as well as waters to fish in, but as a result most of my dwarves have seen more horrors of the deep than they were prepared to deal with.
I'm not sure what I can do to turn back the tide. My dwarves have decent bedrooms, plenty of drink, ample food and entertainment. I don't have any good doctors since the one I brought was among the first to give in to depression, but so far my iron-clad soldiers have handled their opposition without much issue.
Seems to be a known issue with version 44.10 that dwarves will remember the body of a sentient creature for years and be horrified by it time and time again. They don't seem to ever forget it and will inevitably fall in depression as they remember the dead again and again.
I have a werelizard locked away in their own compound. But they get lonely, so every once in a while I will seal a new friend in with them.
I'm hoping one day one of them will survive and then I have two werelizards to be buddys.
Before following any advice, opinions, or thoughts I may have expressed in the above post, be warned: I found Keven Costners "Waterworld" to be a very entertaining film.

It's worrying when I tell my starting militia dwarf (give the wood cutter some weapons/armor training) can't fight a giant rat because "It is terrifying!"
