Out of all the games I’ve ever played, including a few MMOs I spent a ridiculous amount of time in, I don’t think I’ve ever spent so much time in a single game as I’ve done with Dwarf Fortress. Mount & Blade would be a close second.
So you better believe I’ll be buying the hell out of the Steam version. Maybe even a couple extra I’ll send to friends unsolicited.

I always feel bad that I've never been in a good place to donate to the dev team, considering the ridiculous amount of time I've spent playing this game.
"I will write your name in the ruin of them. I will paint you across history in the color of their blood."
All I know is that my gut says maybe.
Seriously though, wouldn't count on it. Right now we're just adding lots and lots of modifiers to stuff and assigning graphics to various items, small builidings etc. Certainly no floodgates are in position.

Besides, knowing DF once the floodgates are open the entire world would flood and we'd all be fucked
Personally I can't wait until work starts on the GUI. I have some ideas but Tarn and Zach did a very extensive research in what the community expects and even I don't have the slightest idea on the results of that. Now THAT will be quite a floodgate.

Mostly I'd just love to see more of the videos above just talking about the current development of DF in general. Can't get enough.

It's too late, someone else already dug the channel, better hope the flood gate is being installed.
I am excited to see what their idea of a GUI looks like.

I am super lazy and hate using the keyboard unless I absolutely have to, so being able to navigate the menu entirely via the mouse would be my wish. But I realize that would be a lot of effort to implement something that probably only I would use, so I don't expect to see it.

Oh right, there's a thread for this game. In anticipation of the Steam release, I've decided to try it again. I'm older, wiser, more experienced, and that's why this time I was able to figure out how to move up and down a list of options.
I have created Xah Tamun, the Dimension of Dragons.
This time I will not immediately have half my dwarves drown in a river that then freezes, cutting off water for the other half of my dwarves, like the only other time I tried Dwarf Fortress.
(when I say immediately, I do mean immediately; a few got thirsty, tried to drink from the river, downed, and then the rest went mad from dehydration shortly afterwards when the ice plugged the river)
I don't know how to move the map further to the left so that's the boundary of the fort for now.
It turns out I'm in the lower left portion of my game area, so that's just the edge of the map, I guess? I assumed I'd have access to the whole world, tho now that I think about it it can't pull a Minecraft and only run the part you can see, so it makes sense that it's relatively small.
Anyway, things are going swimmingly. We have doors!
I've always maintained that the game needs a proper UI much more than a fully functional tileset, but also assumed the former is a lot more work for Tarn, so best we can count on for the initial steam release were some basic improvements. Turns out we're doing a full UI remake with mouse support and buttons for everything! It's kind of scary because I've never designed a full GUI for a game, though luckily I did work one some GUIs in my career so hopefully with feedback from the community we'll be able to make something truly great.

The best kind of scary. Congratulations!
I look forward to your TED Talk on balancing user expectation against the needs and aspirations of a mouse cursor that has had a long and complicated relationship with the other UI elements.

Certainly the only way is up with regards to UI in dwarf fortress
Has Tarn considered hiring a UX expert as part of the design process? Something I've come to know over the years as a programmer is that good UX design is a legit and very separate skill from others within application/game development.
Well, I'm well aware of that, at least. I wonder if that means I'm in the very beginning or the very middle of the Dunning Kruger curve.
I don't know if Tarn's considered or is planning to hire any additional people (besides somebody to help with the more advanced graphics improvements, later on). As you've probably guessed, he's striving for as little external help as possible.

Haha yeah, it's amazing he's brought in any other folks into the project at all!
I'm a big fan of DF, though I rarely actually play it, in no small part thanks to the aforementioned UI and UX. I really want the revamp to succeed, and it's always seemed that Toady's desire to work alone on DF with his brother was in some (certainly not all!) ways a detriment. Here's hoping his new found openness continues!

Mayday is the dev, looks like it's been put on Steam as a test build or something and he's decided to be a scumbag and taunt us with it
EDIT: seriously though, there's a bug in that screenshot, the lowest level is too blue.

The UI and the game chugging along on my old ass laptop back in the day are really the only reasons I stopped playing

First thing I fired up on my new 3700X was DF.
Sadly, it does not multithread.
