I never managed that one although I did dig up under a lava pool one time and destroyed my fort. I just tried to flood the world in cave crocodiles and helmet snakes. FPS dropped to single digits though with only one or two batches.

Next time, open the HFS. That's always a fun time.

DF updates keep ticking in. Just wanted to point this one out in particular:
I'd encourage you to pull this pic up in your browser, and zoom it in a bit. There's some amazing detail here. Tarn points out the blue specks on the wooden table - that's rain. The table was made in an outside carpenter's shop while it was raining, so, in true DF fashion, the table has rain on it.
Also, please join me in gushing over how great the woodburner's workshop and glassmaker's workshop look. The stone door towards the bottom of the picture is also quite charming.
That marbling... like I needed another reason to make things out of microline!
What are the chances that the texture not being based on the grain of the stone it was crafted from will slowly eat away at Toady until he works out how to do that efficiently?
(Then, of course, how to add naturally varied metamorphic rock formation to world gen)

I couldn't find a newer DF thread to post this in, but I had a dream last night that Toady and his brother and a couple of their friends had bought a van, painted it black and then painted Dwarf Fortress ASCII art all over it and we're about to go tour the USA to advertise the upcoming Steam release. It was weird, but Toady was really nice and had a firm handshake in my dream

It's been a while that I played dwarf Fortress --I loved it, but I had a hard time getting used to the Z axis.... I'm a simple dwarf--, but I think I would've remembered if a table description included
This table depicts 2 dwarfs eating a plump helmet, it references the fact of the great harvest of 1843.
It menaces with Iron spikes and is lightly sprinkled with summer rain.
All Dwarfmanship is of the highest quality
On an unrelated note, Rimworld has an expansion upcoming, and I was playing it, and it's fun, but I really prefer the simulation aspect over the story-teller system.
I'd rather be beaten to death by a Goblin because I live in their ancestral lands, than lose 3 colonists because the AI thought my colony was BOORING.
The DF thread is my version of the star citizen thread. I always hope for release news but a sane man would know I won't live to see it.
Yeah, I always get hopeful and then see it's just stuff like:
-Toenail polish getting added and there are tabs so you can see how well it was applied and what color it is and what it was made from
-Talking about how difficult it was to exactly model all air movement across an entire planet simultaneously, taking temperature and humidity and chemical composition and various other factors all into consideration at an infinite number of points across the world
-Cats can now have diapers put on them when they get diarrhea and if they poop then sometimes the poop fills up the diaper and falls out and gets stepped in lol
My yak got stuck in a tree. Not really sure how it happened.
Otterpeople can't swim. ... Or actually I think they were trying to climb the cliff wall surrounding the river and falling back down. Either way there's a lot of otterman blood in the water.
I forgot one of the thing that always burns me out is that just as I'm getting everything stable and have a nice design, 16 migrants show up and I realize everything's getting too crowded.
Although.... This is interesting... A husband and wife power couple just immigrated! Legendary armorsmith/weaponsmith, and their kid.
But the problem is I still haven't found any metal on this map except bismuth. That's going to be fun.
Oh and now some wild turkeys died falling over the waterfall. I bet that's what killed the Otterman family. How in Armok's name they ended up on the river in the first place... But my tavern is right at the base of the waterfall. Kinda a mess right now.

This is a Filled Pink Bottle. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with a Cap of Low Density Polyethylene and bands of Cellulose and decorated with Pink and Yellow waves. It is made from Polyethylene Terephthalate. This object is adorned with Paper that menaces of Overdose. Inside the item is filled with Bismuth Subsalicylate. On the item is an image of medicine.

Iirc you can import metal from the traders. But also metal shows up in layers, so you might have better luck if you dig further down.

I have a visiting Monster Slayer down in my caverns and he started a fight with a Giant Olm. Just beating the living shit out it. But the problem is... it's not dead yet and now they've both collapsed due to exhaustion.

If media has taught me anything it is that these two will now become life long friends and go on a bunch of high flying adventures together. Maybe even save the world once or twice.
A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
Oh great. I was spending so much time setting up traps to prepare for goblins I forgot about megabeasts. A bronze colossus just ran in. Damn. Those duckers are fast. Smashed up all the animals in my pasture before I could get them indoors and killed all the dwarves working outside. I foolishly sent my military after it thinking iron weapons stood a chance but after five seconds they were all dead.
Once everything outside was dead it busted down the farm door and then ... Was promptly decapitated by my single spinning disc trap. Wow.
So now I have a bronze headless statue lying in my farm and 30 dead dwarves. Including my chief medical dwarf. So I guess a fish cleaner should have enough knowledge about blood and guts to become my new doctor, let's see if he can patch 8 surviving dwarfs up so they can start cleaning up....and an animal trainer can be my new mason, let's see if he can make 30 coffins before the next trader caravan comes and freaks out about the mess.

Fuckit. The mason is in the hospital. But I still have my carpenter, so wooden caskets it is!
Edit: holy crap, I've got nearly 20 children in my fortress! I didn't realize until now.
Edit2: ok, so it's a statue of a forgotten beast now? According to the wiki this is normal, so ok. I really wish I could melt it down but that doesn't seem like an option. I could really use the bronze.

And that's it. Not even a few months later a necromancer and his army of the undead showed up and laid siege to my fortress. Still had a ton of bodies lying outside so of course they're all back up and joining the siege. (Somehow more bodies than just 30 dwarfs? I think an elven caravan came when I was distracted by the colossus.)
So, question for you all following along: what do you do when you abandon your fortress to the hordes? Start with a whole new world or just find a different site in the same world?

I usually regen. But I also have a tendency to gen worlds, and then use w/e tool that was to make sure if have useable metals at my site, and Regen a world if I can't find an interesting site with metals.

Yeah, I might do that this time. I never found anything better than bismuth and tetrahedrite so I traded a lot of gem-encrusted goods to get iron weapons, but it was a pain.

When I started playing I always made sure to embark with high amounts of useful metals. At a certain point it becomes easier though and it's nice to be able to pick spots that provide more of a challenge.

I was starting to get to a point where it was fairly easy for me to turtle up, and at least last a decent time based on that, and then they added all the networked caves, and that stopped working as well. I should start playing again.

Aw yusss. Magnetite and limestone right on the surface of this new map. Time for some fun.
Edit: meh. After a few days of making mistakes, I decided I don't like having so much metal on a map. This was just with the "frequent" setting on world creation.
Also, I made the mistake of opening up the first cavern too early and a bunch of monster slayers went in and riled up a giant cave spider who then proceeded to poison and kill four of my original seven.
Too many mistakes. I'll make a new world but maybe try the dfhack prospector instead of using frequent metals...

We're gonna see disemboweled dwarves.
Another update on the Steam page, this one about Activity Zones... which can now be painted with the mouse!
Really digging the UI, it manages to feel retro while having modern functionality.
Also Toady is gonna be on some PAX Online panels this weekend.

If Skynet ever emerges from Dwarf Fortress, I will be simultaneously impressed, not surprised, and so mad at you guys.
Followed by a tantrum spiral that ends the world.

Case in point: Skimming this from bottom up (as I do) I thought it was a real update
Difference: I was only disappointed when I got to the top

Guess I'm upgrading that before I get too far in my new fortress.
