I'm not sure how easy it would be to make TFTD compatible with the new cover-based mechanics though.
Although I certainly like the whole cruise ships possibility.
I guess you'd be ducking behind corral formations, and hiding behind seaweed and ocean grass; wouldn't be that different, mechanically, from being above ground (maybe more units could "fly" by swimming around, lending the game more verticality; that could be cool). Local wildlife would be more of a concern, I think, since it would be somewhat immersion-breaking to not see any fauna in such an environment.
well, everyone would be able to swim in a TftD expansion. No bathosphere suits. It'd probably look like that 007 underwater fight in Thunderball or maybe play it like the underwater fight in one of the GI JOE movies.

Also, there were quite a few maps that could take place in sunken wreckage. Be it ships, airplanes, or UFO's crashed into the sea in UFO defense.
While Lobstermen are fighting the human invaders away from their newfound pirate gold, the Aquatoids are all hiding from the gathering sharks, who smell blood in the water.
Is time a gift or punishment?

Well, it's all underwater, so why bother with standard humanoid combatants anyway? Why not just have all the human combatants in some sort of mini-sub-esque combat thing when they fight underwater? It'd be kinda silly to have a high-budget alien-fighting organization where the soldiers just swim around while fighting. Then you could have two separate tech trees, one for underwater and one for land.

You could move to Europe and pay 100$ for all games, since most publishers think dollars = euros, even though a dollar is only worth 2/3 of an euro at best, besides that, my country doesn't even use euros.

Intel Debrief Officer: Commander, explain to me one more time why you ordered that Squaddie to "scout" that barn with a blaster bomb.
Me: Because the only person close enough to scope it out had already been wounded by a shot coming from that barn and having him in the infirmary for more than a month was unacceptable.
If you're not going to Green Man Gaming dat sheet (and why wouldn't you, Steamworks so it'll register no matter what), you may as well grab a physical collector's edition for all them feelies. It's, what, five bucks more?

Why would you be behind a corral formation? Would the aliens be trying to rustle your sea horses?
Gone are the days of loading up meat...brave soldiers with HE and priming and wandering off the sky ranger to level the field in a literal sense, but really how many times do you have more than 6 uber soldiers endgame
I felt getting to the point of having 4-6 uber soldiers was the entire point of the game. It was like an RPG. In the beginning, you are weak. You slowly build up strength, but not through stat points but through a bloody war of attrition where bad mistakes can instantly set you way back. Its like Hardcore Diablo in that regard. Eventually you get your core squad of rampaging fully armored mind bending space marines and bring forth death to the xenos. Its like they said, "oh, people only need 4-6 decent soldiers in the end, so we'll just max out there. Its better cause we cut the fluff." No, its not better because the core gameplay was getting to that point. Then take away the base defenses, cut the itemization, cut the map size, its seems like half an X-com game. I'm pretty sure it will still be good, just as I'm sure I'll be disappointed.
about endgame, I'd have about 10 spes muhreens, a fusion launcher tank, and whatever else was able to jam into the avenger. There'd be a few rooks, but most of the rest were the other team members I'd used... (this is with no save scumming on normal btw.)
I hope the news that they removed base defense missions is just smoke and mirrors for:

How is that even your mindset? It's a 20 year old franchise that no major studio was touching. It has nowhere to go but up. And I'm sure most of your minor concerns will be remedied when they inevitably open it up to the mod community.

Well, I mean, the X-COM license wasn't being touched, but Xenonauts is coming out pretty soon and that's a pretty faithful followup.

There's more than one "faithful followup" out there and if you just want an X-COM with updated graphics then that's fine. It seems to me that the guys at Firaxis are trying to do something innovative with a game they love. If it felt like some shitty cash grab using a beloved IP then I might be justifiably disappointed too, but I don't see that at all.

TFTD was fantastic. It upped all the ante, it had the cool underwater/land weapons things(except for grenades.. that was a little weird), and it had whole new aliens to kill.
The only problems were the cruise ship missions and.... the cruise ship missions.
I'm sure a remake of TFTD would be fucking awesome.
As far as I'm concerned Firaxis' take on this franchise looks like miles of sex. This is exactly the type of reboot the franchise needed. The gameplay mechanics remain the same, which is what makes XCOM fun, not just all the minmaxing and filling of bars. Everyone loves to fill bars, we know this. But at the end of the day, you're filling those bars so that the GAME is more exciting and fun.
Unless you're some crackpot who just likes to fill bars.
God don't remind me. During chiasaur11's TfdD LP I had just finished reading an update before going to sleep, I would listen to the music while reading them. I had this horrible nightmare that I was actually my dude in his LP and the shit was hitting the fan. I woke up in a cold sweat. Have not listened to that music since.
Pfft at least you could fly away when shit hit the fan.

Regarding the unit limit, you can always play Multiplayer, which will allow you to, apparently, field vast amounts of units.
Who said that? From all I've seen, you get 6 unit slots in multi too. How many get filled depends on how you spend the allotted points. They have said you can set up a game with unlimited points, but no indication of more slots.
Just remember that half the people you meet are below average intelligence.

Went back to find the article, and it looks like the person who wrote is just terrible at choosing words.
These dream squads of up to six units are built using a point cap that can be scaled for players to fight in small skirmishes all the way up to epic battles.
For some reason, as I got to the second part of the sentence, it pushed the first part out of my head.
That's unfortunate.

Dude, what are you talking about? I uploaded you to that flash drive and put you in my sub's memory when I took it to leave for my Interceptor assignment in Brazil. The sub's still there in the dock. If you access the root controls you should be able to pull a Knight Rider.

Ah, well, that's easy. Aliens don't get vehicles to ride around in.
X-Com 1 took enough of his time.
