Gone are the days of loading up meat...brave soldiers with HE and priming and wandering off the sky ranger to level the field in a literal sense, but really how many times do you have more than 6 uber soldiers endgame :p
I felt getting to the point of having 4-6 uber soldiers was the entire point of the game. It was like an RPG. In the beginning, you are weak. You slowly build up strength, but not through stat points but through a bloody war of attrition where bad mistakes can instantly set you way back. Its like Hardcore Diablo in that regard. Eventually you get your core squad of rampaging fully armored mind bending space marines and bring forth death to the xenos. Its like they said, "oh, people only need 4-6 decent soldiers in the end, so we'll just max out there. Its better cause we cut the fluff." No, its not better because the core gameplay was getting to that point. Then take away the base defenses, cut the itemization, cut the map size, its seems like half an X-com game. I'm pretty sure it will still be good, just as I'm sure I'll be disappointed.

The more I think about the issue, the more I think the lethality design issue was a first-order decision about lethality. Soldiers still get their lumps and die from all accounts.I think it was about maximizing the accessibility, and it will be hard to keep people engaged and micromanaging 10-20 soldiers a mission, especially with an xbox user base. I wouldn't want to have to try to play UFO defense or TFTD on an xbox, either.

I have already preordered this and Xenonauts, though. I am really excited about Xenonauts - it takes the core xcom game play and puts it into a plausible (as far as these things go) cold war scenario.

I really feel like most everyone saved and loaded in the middle of battle a lot. Of around 15 people I watched play the first game, no one ironmanned it through when their favorite soldier ate it breaching a door or exiting the Skyranger. If they had similar data going in, it would make some sense to not force people to keep reloading.

Fishman's Let's Play has been save/reload free. The one exception was when the game crashed, but that was due to Rankenphile's death causing the end of the universe and a full temporal reversal of biblical proportions.

Yeah; on the Internet there have definitely been a significant number of ironman games, whether for shared games or Let's Play or what have you. Catastrophe is pretty funny when there people to either share in the misery or revel in other people's misfortune.

God don't remind me. During chiasaur11's TfdD LP I had just finished reading an update before going to sleep, I would listen to the music while reading them. I had this horrible nightmare that I was actually my dude in his LP and the shit was hitting the fan. I woke up in a cold sweat. Have not listened to that music since.
Pfft at least you could fly away when shit hit the fan.

Fly away and leave your AI buddy trapped in a server closet with all sensory attachments getting cut off one by one.

Every second 100 teraflops of increasing isolation and agony.

Dude, what are you talking about? I uploaded you to that flash drive and put you in my sub's memory when I took it to leave for my Interceptor assignment in Brazil. The sub's still there in the dock. If you access the root controls you should be able to pull a Knight Rider.
I was talking about the base invasion that didn't happen.

I can attest to this. I played a game that I streamed for some fellow PAers as something fun to do for an afternoon or two, using their names and keeping a eulogy for each as they met their demise at alien hands despite my best efforts to keep them alive.

    The Glorious Fallen
    Corkeh:
Died First Mission Due to Fatal Wounds but took down a alien before he did. His memory spurred the men to great achievements in his memory. Order # 2.1.2 was carried out.

    Ginuwine:
Died on the 1st terror mission, mission in Shanghai, instantly killed by their own proximity grenade in the final moments of the mission. Remains were put into storage at the request of Command (CO#2.1.2)

    IdolNinja:
Died on the 2nd terror mission, in Sydney Australia, after blowing 2 cyberdisks to oblivion, the third one proved too much of an ordeal when his rocket detonated too soon and he was cut down in his prime. Order #2.1.2 executed.

    Deni:
Died on the 2nd terror mission, in Sydney Australia, after avenging IdolNinja's death but then was herself killed when she heroicly threw herself on a alien grenade to save the lives of Eelektrik and Lepwave. There was not even a corpse to take back to base. Recruit Yoshua was devastated by the loss and vowed to kill every last one of the alien bastards.

    Eelektrik:
Died at the crash site 6, while infiltrating the UFO, shot dead a snakeman and was in turn shot by a snakeman. Ssssshot. Eelektrik was a bad ass momma jamma having killed 5 aliens over 5 missions in his time with Xcom, yet was never promoted farther than Squaddie, and will be sorely missed. Order #2.1.2 executed.

    Lord Snot:
A new recruit on his first mission, a downed UFO in the Sahara Desert, opened fire with everything he had but it was not enough, with two shots of plasma a Snakeman cut him in two. In accordance with Command Order #2.1.2, the soldier's remains were placed in storage.

    Digital:
Captain of the Xcom Gents was said to have 7 or more kills over 11 missions. Even though he was wearing personal armor, all it took was one blast of plasma from a floater while assaulting the interior of a downed UFO to cut his life too short on that 11th mission. The other Xcom Gents were stunned into inaction and the floater nonchalantly returned to the bridge to await new victims. He was the best of us, what will we do now? CO#2.1.2 confirmed, suggest bumping up to CO#2.2.1

    Big Isy:
Only just recently promoted to Squaddie, accredited with 3 kills over 6 missions, he attempted to avenge Captain Digital's death ... and succeeded, he blasted the floater to hell storming the bridge. Only two other floaters were waiting for him. The one closest to the alien controls opened up with full auto and Big Isy used another floater for cover, it almost worked too. First shot cut down the other floater and the last shot took Big Isy in the face. Again, the effectiveness of the personal armor is called into question. CO#2.1.2 obligations fulfilled.

    Blain:
Rookie Blain had only one other mission and no kills to his name when he died. While exiting the landing craft into what was supposed to be a safe LZ of Crash Site #12, a snakeman took a pot shot at the tank on the opposite side of the craft from the ramp and it took Blain unawares in the back. Yet again the personal armor was not effective against the aliens weapons, having only one other battle proven instance of it staving off serious injury. The men have taken to doodling profane symbols and words on their armor, saying if they are given thin canvas to work with they might as well become artists.

    Bobmyknob:
Rookie Bobmyknob on his first mission (Crash Site #13 in the wilderness near Ottawa, Canada) came over the hill in his brand new personal armor and was blasted by what is presumed to be a Snakeman sniper in the dark. He never even saw it coming.

    Lepwave:
Squaddie Lepwave who had 7 missions and 2 kills was shot down by the same Snakeman sniper as Rookie Bobmyknob as she was trying to flank its position. Frustratingly again, personal armor proved ineffective - the engineers and scientist need to review their designs and procedures in light of its failures on the battlefield in defending against the alien weaponry.

    Travathian:
Squaddie Travathian had 8 missions and 3 kills to his name. He was the first off the landing craft at Crash Site #14, spotted a Mutton at the UFO entrance and opened fire. Then he was blasted to bits by a foe no one could place. Personal armor is a farce, I'm going to have those scientists and engineers heads on a silver platter! The Gents must have better protection!

    Anon The Felon:
Rookie Anon was next off the landing craft and took fire immediately, which luckily missed him. He tossed a flare in the direction the fire came from and found a Mutton taking a bead on him. This was probably the bastard who killed Travathian! Anon dove off the ramp to clear the way but it did him no good, the Mutton did not miss a second time and he had only a basic battle uniform for protection.

    Kaffaljidhma:
Rookie Kaffaljidhma had yet to be promoted after 3 missions and no kills. It was his 4th mission to Lagos to fight the aliens 4th terror site when he met his ignoble end. He was the first off the landing craft and it was immediately a bad situation, the LZ was surrounded by Snakemen and Chrysalids. Instead of evacuating, he opened fire and hit the the chrysalid but it didn't even flinch. But it wasn't a alien that ended his life, as the Gent soldiers bailed out of the ramp and tried to no avail to put down the Chrysalid, Captain Drake thought he had a clear shot at the Chrysalid but ended up putting most of his rounds into Kaffaljidhma's personal armored back side.

    Redlance:
Colonel Redlance had been on 15 missions and had 3 confirmed kills. The mission to Lagos to fight the alien terrorists was his last. Managing to make off the ramp, his power suit failed to protect him from the Snakeman's plasma fire who came charging out of the debri of a small warehouse it had blown up trying to kill civilians there. Redlance was one of the best of us and his loss was a shock that was felt throughout the ranks, if he could go down to one shot while in a power suit, any of us could!

    Heartfinder:
Rookie Heartfinder had been on 4 missions and had no confirmed kills. The mission to Lagos against the 4th terrorist site was proving to be our deadliest yet, as Heartfinder found out as they scouted around the corner of a half blown up small warehouse. A Snakeman fired on them and missed, they returned fire on full auto several times and did manage to hit the Snakeman but it was not enough, the Snakeman easily blasted through the personal armor and we lost another Gent.

    Donhonk:
Seargant Donhonk had 8 missions and 2 confirmed kills. He had set up a second story firing position on the entrance to the UFO and gave a good showing, unloading fire upon the Muttons within but it was not enough, he suffered fatal wounds from the few shots that the Muttons managed to hit him with and died shortly there after. His power suit just about helped him survive the onslaught, damn.

    Wolvie:
Commander Wolvie had been on 20 missions and had 12 confirmed kills. He was just mopping up the last of the Mutton aliens on a very small UFO crash site when Sgt Donhonk was killed and this incensed his Commander who just couldn't take watching his men die under is command any longer. He rushed the entrance to the UFO to finish the Muttons off but when faced with 3 against one he knew the odds were against him and stumbled back out into the field surrounding the UFO. The Muttons easily caught up to him and shot him in the back of his power armor but the rest of the Gent team blasted the remaining Muttons as they exited the UFO.
