I liked the use of psionics that I saw.
"You want to pull that grenade off your belt."
"You want to pull the pin on that grenade."
"You want to drop the grenade at your feet."

This was posted by Greg from 2K (i'll wrap it in spoiler tags but it's simply bonuses for where you build your base):
North America - Discount on aircraft and aircraft weapons
Europe - Discount on Labs and Workshops
Asia - Discount on Foundry and Officer Training School projects
South America - Autopsies and interrogations completed instantly
Africa - Increased monthly XCOM funding

Wow - hard toss-up between Africa and South America.
Africa also starts you with less money in the beginning. I think Jake described it as the 'hard mode' choice during one of the streams because it makes the first month incredibly tough.

Also, according to that list, you apparently can't build in Australia.
EDIT: I'm also guessing aircraft will cost big bucks (upfront and in maintenance) so I'll probably go North America first.

Ah. Hadn't heard that bit. I certainly don't need to start with hard mode.

Australia doesn't need any help defending itself. Have you seen the wildlife there? The spiders alone are enough to make a Chryssalid start wearing Depends.

Hmmm, Asia looks good to me. No red shirts for me, if I can help it.

Were there any other tidbits from The Best Human about starting locations?
Did you notice their radar dish is 4 floors below the ground? C'mon now! Or maybe it is not your normal radar technology... :rotate:
That is actually really bothering me.
On another note, should JAKE SOLOMON, GENTLEMAN ADVENTURER make an appearance in the game, how should he be equipped? What would be your ideal load-out for such a hero, if it could be anything you liked?
...and when you are done with that; take a folding
chair to Creation and then suplex the Void.

JAKE SOLOMON, BEST HUMAN would probably be a heavy, as is befitting a man of his superhuman stature and build. A calming father-figure on the battlefield. An example to us all.
His loadout? A soothing, manly voice, speced for self deprecation.
It'd just be a shame if snipers were the easily abusable uberclass.
Until you have to go into a building.
This right here. If you noticed, snipers only got their insane to-hit bonus by being very high above the enemy. as soon as they engage on the same plane, that accuracy is crap. Also... snipers by their nature deal with threats from afar. You still need to get close to drop a stun charge on an alien and good luck with buildings like was said by mortious. Using the flying armor? it's a two way street, just like in the original. sure your vision is excellent, and you rain fire from above, but Im sure Super 6'4 would tell you the natives know when it's time to party.
plus... who's going to walk out into the aether and find your targets for your sniper? The assault class is shown to have perks that survive being shot at by overwatch and suppression, as well as the health to take a hit or two. Perks seen so far for sniper just make them more killy.
Im betting snipers are going to be glass cannons. Very awesome glass cannons.
Psionic of course, but I don't know how the psionic class will interact with the soldier's previous class - it has been mentioned that soldiers can "become" psionic, which I assume is similar to the original's training or somesuch.
Rookie
Assault
Heavy (same as assault?)
Support - had medic skills and smoke grenades in the video linked recently
there was mention of five classes besides rookie and the shivs were their own thing. psionic was the mid-late game unlock. I know there is a news article or vid somewhere that has jake mentioning all the different classes.
"You want to pull that grenade off your belt."
"You want to pull the pin on that grenade."
"You want to drop the grenade at your feet."
SHIVs - customizable, repairable, expendable
I know JAKE SOLOMON, G.A. mentioned a Support class somewhere as well. But he only mentioned the classes, not what they were capable of, let alone what their perks are.
I'm gonna go ahead and believe that it's because no alien wants to fuck with Australia/New Zealand
I was pretty sure they said in their live stream that bases can be built anywhere.
"Who the hell builds a high-tech military base in the South Pole!? Seriously, who does that?! It takes 6 weeks to get mail, you can't take a piss without your dick breaking off, and shore leave? Shore leave? Believe it or not, penguin hookers don't deal in base script. First chance I get, I'm defecting to the aliens. At least they have the sense to do human experiments with the heat on."

I know they're at the least medics. Maybe they can buff, etc

I like the decision to separate assault and heavy. I feel like these roles get muddled together too frequently in games. It's like the moment you say "evasion, speed, flanking, rapid attack" people see a no-armour scout and the thinking stops there.

I believe Support soldiers are medics/ jacks of all trades. I remember that they can throw smoke grenades, and I'm also guessing they can buff your squad in other ways.
Also Psionic doesn't work like the other classes, they haven't revealed exactly how yet but your rookies won't turn into a psionic class on their first level-up like they do the other classes.

Hmmm, 6 classes not counting rookies, so we can bring 1 of each if we so choose. How many teams is everyone going to have? Stick with one, you might have a super team pretty early, 2 or 3, you can deal with losses and injuries a lot better.
MortiousThe Nightmare BeginsMove to New ZealandRegistered Userregular
I was thinking 8-10 squadies (for 1 team of six), and rotate the highest level out for the lowest level every mission, assuming no injuries or extremely under-leveled member due to alien probing with plasma weapons.
I gives me a generally uber-squad, with some room for failure, but also minimizes micro-management.
Similar to my UFO setup, since I never ran with a full team later on.

Especially when we hear "I want one of each"
Yet the first 4 rookies will turn out to be heavy, sniper, heavy, heavy. Then your next 3 will be sniper, support, heavy. Then your next 3 sniper, sniper, sniper. Etc. You get the picture. You can have fun trying to plan it out, but in the end, the game will be more about what you are given and how you adapt. "
Basically you keep farming rookies till you get what you want.

"Obviously that puts you behind the 8-ball, and you'd have to do some work to get some of your new recruits up to speed. But there's also some mechanics in the game that encourage having not just one A-squad and leaving all the other rookies with no combat action whatsoever. Even if your soldiers don't die, they can be fatigued, they can be wounded. So you can't just put them in every single mission. Ideally, you'll have a B-squad."
So Contact Team Ultima and Contact Team Ribaldry basically.
see the main thing that freaks me out is that everybody keeps talking about having to make a choice between helping a place in China or a place in the 'States. But I can't tell from the wording if it's a binary "Will you help China or the States?" thing, or if it's simply a case of not having the resources to hit two locations at once.
