I'm already looking into what they would call an "endgame" build.

Aluminum chassis with radial knob, purple Zealios, custom quick disconnect cable. The only thing I'm waiting on is good, actual backlit doubleshot PBT keycaps from someone like GMK.
Once you build it, you will have a new "endgame" in mind the very next day.

Until you stumble across a bespoke one-piece carbon fibre keyboard chassis kit somewhere...

is this like, a ground-up build you're doing yourself? I'd really like to get a nice board with a radial knob/media control but options are woefully limited (basically just Das, seemingly)

They are woefully limited, but every once in a while a groupbuy in Geekhack sneaks by.

I've seen one with a knob AND a small status screen.

Come to the right side... Or maybe the left? Several split ergo boards have rotary encoders and small displays. I grabbed a lily58 pro kit that I have yet to assemble.

e: mysticmechs.com is where I got the kit. They also sell them assembled but I think they are between batches?

Apologies for not reading all 53 pages to see if this has been covered before, I was referred over here by Mugsley from the PC Build thread.

So I killed my K70 (again!) by spilling things in it. It's probably recoverable by way of disassembly and cleaning, but I don't really like the keyboard so I was looking at getting a new one.

    Wants are:
    1) lower profile (vs k70) - One of my most disliked things about the k70 is how regularly I mistype things or accidentally hit the windows/rightclck buttons with my right hand, b/c of how tall the keys are
    2) Reasonable noise level - It doesn't need to be ultra silent, but I don't want IBM level click-clak. k70- had reds and a was a bit much, so i'm thinking browns or the newer silent reds
    3) Num pad. Not negotiable.
    4) Multimedia keys (volume, play/stop, ffwd/rwd,mute)
    5) Wired

RGB is not necessary, but not a game changer. Extra USB ports on the keyboard are nice, but not needed.
*EDIT* - waterproofing would be huge. I kill keyboards way too often by being clumsy and drinking at my desk :P

Based on a quick research, the Corsair K70 RGB MK.2 LOW PROFILE looks to be a solid contender. Logitech has a similar one but was more expensive and seemed to lacka mute key. Steelseries did not have any low profile options, and I did not look at Razer as I have not heard good things about that company latetly. Any other thoughts? The K70 lowpro is already more than I really wanted to spedn, but it's managable.

Also had a suggestion from jungleroomx of Roccat Vulcan Aimo 120, which looks quite sexy but is missing some multimedia keys.

Reds should already be about as quiet as it gets unless you’re bottoming them out; browns might be a solution to that, or installing o-rings (it sounds like this might be what ‘silent’ reds are?)

FWIW blacks are the linear cherry switch with more resistance than reds, but they are harder to get than the usual blue/red/brown

Meanwhile, I've finally gotten my Ducky One 2, after more than a month of waiting for shipments to arrive. Since it's my first mechanical keyboard, I don't have a particularly strong reference frame for feel, but it seems tactile and quiet enough, and feels solid. I've spent a little bit of time tonight getting used to typing on it and finding the ideal leg heights. Thank goodness I purchased a wrist rest in preparation, the new keyboard's quite a bit taller than my old membrane keyboard.

(Now to hope that I can stave the temptation to dig deeper in the hobby. Still thinking about getting a 65% in the back of my mind, and trying to bat away the incredibly minor annoyance of the Ducky keycap legends being a little nonstandard. At the very least, I could stand to wait to see more keyboards in person, after gathering restrictions have been lifted!)

the wild part about ortholinear keyboards is realizing how much your typing is not standard ten finger typing
aka i basically NEVER used my right pinky for anything except the enter key and it is quite tired as a result of typing on this

science says that ten finger typing isn't actually much better than self taught methods where the wrong fingers are pushing things, but i have this thing and i'm therefore committed
i'm fighting a lot of ingrained muscle memory here though at least i can type out posts here

some people on the internet were saying they used nonstandard layouts on their ergodox e.g. COLEMAK so they could keep their qwerty memory for staggered keyboards and use this other layout for ortholinear and somehow their brains were better able to process the differences? but that seems like a bad idea right? stick to qwerty and just learn my ten finger typing properly? i managed to type this post out anyway at least

I use like 3 fingers and a thumb for spaces, pinkies run the ctrl alt and shift.

I could not type on that thing, even though they look super comfy

i've had it for a week and i've managed to actually finally feel okay typing on it and making post

it's weird though, going full 10 finger

but i think if i keep practicing, if i managed to get to this point in a week, won't be too bad

it was definitely and adjustment though, but feeling generally comfortable now - still some ways to go though

Nice, i tried an ergodox and a planck ortholinear for about a week and gave up on it... I had issues swapping between the regular keeb at home and the ortho at work. Maybe I'll give it another go now that I'm WFH though.

I think my next venture is going to be to find a DIY kit with hot-swappable sockets that I like the look of. I like trying different switches so it seems like a good option to look into.

practicing on keybr certainly helped me get to something usable
maybe someday since i'm getting used to this ergodox it'd be cool to try a planck... or build a dactyl manuform hmm that sounds cool

i still need to figure out a good symbols layer - i stole someone else's layout and it looks good, and a numpad on the right hand, but need to train myself to use that, but it made sense to first practice being able to functionally type which i can do now

have a nice layer for arrow keys to navigate without leaving home row which is chill

i remember reading some ppl talking about the Kailh Box Browns having some issues with sometime actually being clicky and i noticed that with a few of my keys which is annoying... but hot swappable board so nbd, but annoying still

(lol and now i'm looking at the iris and dactyl and lily 58 as someday things... it's funny that i was like, i'm working from home and don't have my microsoft sculpt... oh they gave us a small budget for WFH equipment let me see if i can get a cool keyboard..
then my shock at how really into keyboards ppl were, and chatting with my coworker.. and now i'm in this rabit hole with a blank keycap RGB split ortholinear keyboard)

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good keyboard in like the $50-100 range? For reference I have little hands, it's for home use so it wouldn't have to be portable, and I don't have much of a preference on noise. Mostly I'd want it to be durable and, again, kind of for someone who has small somewhat prone to stress injury hands.

There's a ton of good Logitech and Corsair boards in that range. The Logi G413, Corsair K55, HyperX Alloys are all good. If you don't need a backlight, the Ducky DKON's are a solid choice as well.

Just need to vent a little bit.

It's been about a week since I got my first mechanical keyboard, and the typing experience feels much nicer than before. I'm beginning to understand the critiques that enthusiasts have about 'ping' coming from pre-built keyboards without lubed switches, modified stabilizers, and other customizations. However, it doesn't really affect me, especially since I don't have anyone to bother. I also maybe understand why people say that the tactile bump on the Cherry MX Browns is pretty subtle, but then again, I don't have a good reference point to know what other tacticle switches feel like. The bigger issue is that my arms have gotten sore over the past week, from trying to get used to the new keyboard. I've discovered that my desk is too tall and my chair doesn't go high enough for proper ergonomics, despite the fact that I didn't really have any issues with the old membrane keyboard. So I've got to do some experimentation for keyboard placement and posture in order to make this thing work for me. I think I'm gonna need to get used to floating my arms, or at least that's my experiment for today.

I actually purchased a wrist rest prior to getting my keyboard - the same brand as the one you've linked, but in the 14 inch size. It felt good when I was trying to get used to the height of the new keyboard, but I just wasn't sure if I was utilizing it properly enough since I was building up some soreness. I feel like my typing is a little bit more comfortable floating my arms now that I've had a little more practice today. The wrist rest is still vital for when I'm doing non-typing work, though. When I'm doing image manipulation, the rear of my left palm really likes having that base to wait on while my right hand is busy working the mouse.

All that said, even though I've got less stress in my left arm after today's work, I'm still a little bit sore on my right. So I've still got more testing to be done, and more attention to be made on my posture while I'm working.

I placed a pre-order on a Ducky One 2 in the middle of March, and just missed a shipment cutoff at the end of March. Afterwards, I had a couple-weeks delay from an expected ship date in mid-April to the end of April. All in all, it was about a month and a half wait. However, going from a membrane keyboard to a mechanical, it was worth the wait. It took a couple of weeks for me to get used to the keyboard though, as documented by my posts here.

I guess while I'm bumping the topic, I'm still thinking about the hobby and thinking about getting a 65%-size keyboard, keeping the Ducky One 2 as a backup. But I've also resolved myself to wait until I can actually test out other keyboards in order to figure out what kinds of switches and profiles I might like before diving into making additional purchases. Given the state of the world, who knows how long it'll be before that can happen. So I think my money's safe, at least for now.

You can get a 9-key switch sampler for like $15. It won't help you with keycap profile (though from what I can tell the differences are tiny, with the main thing being OEM-profile are easier to find in stock), but it at least gets you the major Cherry switches to try.
