As has been stated a billion times, this thing is amazingly similar to Battle Royale.

I had similar notions when I went to see The Tournament. This is a little-known 2009 British independent film. I saw it at the cinema and the cast and director were there to answer questions afterwards. I couldn't believe nobody mentioned Battle Royale. I didn't want to make a scene so fought the urge to take these people to task over this. But it was the exact same thing. Near future televised game where people have to kill each other. And then at the end,
the winner kills the guy who runs the tournament
. Even the same ending as Battle Royale then (from my memory).

Actually, The Tournament is probably less derivative than Hunger Games. The Tournament involves adults and it takes place in a crowded city. Otherwise, same movie.

It's amazing that one Battle Royale ripoff is totally unknown but now this latest Battle Royale ripoff is all the rage. Shows what a huge marketing budget can do.

I haven't seen The Hunger Games, so I can't compare, but The Tournament was pretty bad. Which is a shame, because it had a bunch of good actors and a decent idea. It just didn't hang together very well.

Not that Collins' alleged inspiration for the series is much better.

Apparently she got the idea by flipping channels between a report on the war in Iraq and some random reality show.

To be fair though, who hasn't seen those two things and thought about writing a book where teens fight to the death?

I call friend-of-friend dibs on her Hunger Games things. Feel free to keep the Avengers thread updated, she has way too much of those for me to keep track of.

I think I have deeply offended one of my friends when I told her that while I enjoyed the first book well enough that I only thought the movie was "okay".

    Whoops. Oh well.

I think for me that what I like about Katniss is her attempt to calculate everything that is going on.
Obviously the: Wait could this boy really like me? Thing gets a little overdone at times but it is a YA novel so I'm not that shocked. It didn't bother me very much overall.

I think some of that is lost in the movie. So it made her less appealing to me as a character. But it wasn't a bad film.

Eh, it seems a tad disingenuous to compare BR to THG. There's obvious gladiatorial similarities but one is a means of reducing delinquent students in the "real" world and the other is a televised tournament transplanted to a more fantastical setting. Also worth mentioning that the former is distinctly darker in tone, and a helluva lot more graphic

In much the same way that I'd dismiss anyone who insisted point-blank that they were nothing alike, it's getting pretty dull having people insist the reverse, that this latest endeavour is a complete rip-off that's unworthy of examination on its own merits

If anything, there's plenty of extant sci-fi/fantasy stories about kids competing to be the best of the best in a murderous tournament that are probably better parallels!

Of course, having said this, I haven't even read all the books, so for all I know the rest of the trilogy is just a literal BR retread...

I had forgotten about Battle Royale when I read the books. I've never read the Battle Royale books or seen the Battle Royale movies. Hell, I wouldn't have heard of the stupid thing if it wasn't for one phalla here four years ago. All I know about is the premise, which is basically an organized Lord of the Flies.

Considering that the person who wrote the Hunger Games is around my mother's age and isn't, as far as I'm aware, a huge Japanophile nerd, it's pretty fucking likely that she has never heard of Battle Royale.

Hell, it's much more likely that she's heard of Running Man over Battle Royale.

So basically if you are being a butt and calling the people who made the movie/book a fraud cause they don't mention battle royale, you are a dumb-dumb stupid-head.

the hunger games is about the media as a tool of oppression and battle royale is about what people do when they are told to kill or die

    totally dissimilar

The BR movie is different than the book. The novel paints the match closer to what THR does insofar as a method to show that the Government is always in power. The school class chosen doesn't matter, the kids' parents don't matter. Everyone of that age is eligible, and if you're picked, you have to participate.

The main differences between THG and BR boil down to Katniss knowing her shit from watching the program yearly, whereas in BR, only the winner is shown on TV, not the progress and mindsets of the students. Of course the kids in BR aren't specifically trained to participate in the game either, which makes for interesting scenes, like the one in the Lighthouse, or the Sailor Moon reject.

That said, I read THG and was entertained, and am probably going to watch the movie at some point in the near future. Or at least rent it on DVD in a few months.

I thought this movie was pretty hood. And I don't think the complaint about the shaky cam obscuring a what was going on in the battle scenes holds a lot of water. It's not inaccurate, but well, I think watching kids murder each other isn't something that needs to be seen in graphic detail.

In fact, I'm pretty sure that's why the action in the movie is obscured.

    i loved this movie

never read any of the books, but i think i will now

also i agree with the geebs that is a mod, they clearly intended to obscure a lot of the killing with shaky cam. they had to maintain a pg-13 rating somehow.

my only real complaint with the movie is that i didn't feel like katniss and peeta's romance was plotted very well. it was kind of sudden, and then they were overly into each other. there were a few other relationships that similarly didn't feel that well drawn, but i think it's just one of those things you have to deal with in an adaptation. there's not much i would cut to make room for more natural relationship growth, and it's already 2 and a half hours.

That is because Katniss totally is not in to peeta. It was just a strategy to get sponsors, except peeta doesn't know that. Poor peeta.

Well, kind of. It's something she's not really sure about herself, plus, it's kind of irrelevant in the face of their survival anyways

All of the werewolfy hybrids have like, numbers corresponding to the tributes on their collars and human-looking eyes and it's super dumb and the one thing I really didn't like about the first book, but in the next one iirc it's revealed that that was all just the Gamesmakers trying to fuck with people's heads. Still pretty dumb and I'm glad the movie version wasn't as dumb as it could have been.

As the arbiter of what is Just and Right I now give you my OPINIONS:
    It was an OK movie.

The shaky camera was absolute shit. You could have had the action be implied or hidden the gore in a way that wasn't nauseating and made it impossible to watch. NOTE TO ALL DIRECTORS: SHAKY CAM IS FUCKING RETARDED, STOP USING IT. This is the same camera technique used to make Doomsday, an R rated movie, the shitty shitty movie that it was. Shaky cam was used in gorey action there. It is just a shit, shit, shit way of filming. I would have enjoyed the movie a lot more without the shaky cam and just having it cut away from any gore like a made for TV movie on TBS.

I am glad they didn't spend any time on the dogs. The fact that they are genetically engineered humanimals is kinda weird as shit in the books and doesn't serve much purpose.

I did not like the change they made to Rue's death scene. It was unnecessary and kinda served to Disney-fy Katniss. In the book she sees Rue get killed and attacks the kid in a rage. She is not in immediate danger as she kills the kid with an arrow before he can bring the spear to bear on her. This is really important as it is the only 'true' kill she gets, the rest are a mercy killing (the last one) or by happy accident/self defense (the tracker jackers). Instead in the movie, she shoots the arrow as the kid throws the spear, making the kill in self-defense.

So really, she didn't get a true 'first aggressor' kill in the movie. It was all self-defense, accident, or mercy. It was a hugely important aspect of her character and the only reason I can see for changing it is to Disney-fy Katniss.

The only other thing I didn't like that they left out was the sleeping medicine. They have the note about making a bigger kiss, they have her making a bigger kiss, but they didn't show the medicine she got to knock out Peeta. I thought that was an important thing as part of her Quid Pro Quo in her using the 'love' to survive.

Oh, and I guess also I didn't like that they left out her confrontation with Peeta about how she thought he was going along with her plans to 'fake it' from the begining, whereas he thought she actually loved him.

Other than those three things, and the stupid fucking shakey camera, I'd have liked the movie more than the book. Seriously though. Fuck. Shakey cam.

I mean, I really liked how
the movie managed to get information across to the audience without relying on a narrator, as most all of the information in the book is provided through a hamfisted internal monologue by Katniss.

The only problems I had with shaky cam were right at the start, when they were using it when she was just...walking around. In the fight scenes...well, I think it was for the best. You get a hint of what was happening, but what's happening should be nauseating and hard to watch. I think that showing it with any clarity could come way too close to glorifying what was going on, and well, that's kind of waaaaaaaaay against the message the movie is trying to get across.

  • thorgotthorgot there is special providence in the fall of a sparrowRegistered User regular
i thought it was ok, and i usually hate shaky cam

i also noticed it most at the beginning and got worried that the whole movie would be shot that way, because i was sitting in the second row and it was a little hard to follow

  • ElderlycrawfishElderlycrawfish Registered User regular
Yeah, beginning shaky cam was kind of stupid. Let's focus on someone in bed and not moving but we can't even hold the camera still for 15 seconds on this stationary target.

Then it was a "look how poor our town is, we can't even afford a tripod"

But after that it wasn't that big a deal.

    and I understand

It seems like a concept I would enjoy for cheesy fun

But then they threw Tim Burton's name up there and the director of Wanted

That new Tim Burton-directed film looks like shit too. The one with Johnny Depp playing a vampire, which, I mean...that almost seems like the kind of film someone would make if they were trying really hard to imitate Burton.
