I remember my brother and I ran out of ammo during the Excella fight.

Because we didn't see those two big ass turrets until afterwards.

Since the other general Resident Evil thread seems to be dead, might as well post this in this one.

For the nostalgia minded, Retronauts recently had two episodes about the series. http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=9094822 and http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=9095208.

Also 8-4 play also did a retrospective that goes up to Zero. Which starts about an hour and 30 minutes in. In my opinion they do a better job then Retronauts.

    There were turrets?

    Fuck.

That whole boss fight was just awful, really, and emblematic of RE5's problems. It wasn't engaging, you didn't care about the boss at all, and it was just so absurdly over-the-top. Enemies like Mr. X and Birkin were phenomenal because you could still see their humanity, which made them incredibly chilling. The giant tentacle monsters spawned by Uroboros were just absurd.

Also, Irving and Excella should have been cut out of the story entirely. If solely Jill had been the main villain until she's freed, that would have been excellent. Personally, I'd have really liked it if Jill had actually killed Sheva right before Chris frees here; that would add some excellent morality issues for the character to deal with while also enabling her to help bring down Wesker, with whom she has a great deal of history.

Letting Sheva fire the RPG instead of Jill was just moronic, honestly.

The Resident Evil series continues the fine Japanese tradition of having terrible terrible female characters. Claire Redfield is only good for babysitting kids and Jill Valentine becomes subservient to the series big bad guy. I really hated that about 5.

Actually, I think Claire's pretty decent. She's got no formal military training, yet holds her own against a whole bunch of horrifying zombies and other nasties without constantly requiring rescue.

Jill as the villain could have been amazing if done right, but since it's Capcom we're talking about, it wasn't.

It's also weird that no new major characters have really been introduced since RE2.

Agreed. It's easier for them to just rehash the "super cool" secret agent male characters that are all the rage nowadays thanks to CoD, I suppose.

I'm still pissed that Claire doesn't look to be in RE6 at all. Having Sherry would be something, as Sherry also virtually dropped off the face of the earth, but if this game ends up as a Chris and Leon brofest with no mention of Claire again, I'll be pretty peeved.

I hated her as a character; she was bland, uninteresting, devoid of any real personality, and stole what should've been Jill's role at the end of the game.

I'd much rather that she never popped up again, and we simply got new and improved female characters in her place.

Well, first of all, you should be considering why you keep running out of ammo. You should be managing your ammo count during downtime, and try to avoid wasting it. It's just like any other Resident Evil game. But it's true that there are times when you can't avoid using the inventory in the middle of the action.

If you want to give something to your partner, highlight the item in your inventory and press the right trigger. That will equip whatever is highlighted (even ammo or herbs), and you can just walk up to them and press X to give it to them or use it on them. With this you can equip it while you're in a safe spot and then run to your partner and quickly give it to them, and you don't have to worry about them moving too far away from you to "give" while you're fumbling through the menu. Also, using the right trigger to equip items means you can just tap Y, then RT to equip the item in the center slot, so that sort of becomes a fifth quick slot.

As far as requesting items goes, "Request" is the only menu option that comes up when you select an item in your partner's inventory, so you don't have to "select request" so much as just tap the button twice.

RE5 was designed to be played in co-op. The inventory is designed so that you can do stuff without interrupting your co-op partner, and it works really well given the constraints. I can't think of any action game that does a real-time inventory better.

I do my best to make sure we both have enough ammo and manage inventory between battles, but ammo still runs out when we are being swarmed by enemies.

The RE4 inventory system was far superior. I gotta say everything about RE5's system, especially upgrades and treasures, feels like an afterthought. An enormous leap backwards. The whole thing is so irritating I may just shelve this one.

  • The_TuninatorThe_Tuninator Registered User regular
I actually like RE5's inventory system, minus the inability to pause and rearrange your inventory, as it's very evocative of those of the previous games.

Not being able to pause is just hideous though.

Also, regarding managing ammo, I assume you guys are already doing this, but definitely make sure you are getting melee kills wherever possible; it really helps.

  • mntorankusumntorankusu I'm not sure how to use this thing.... Registered User regular
Nothing was an afterthought. Everything was designed around being played in co-op, which means they traded the more in-depth inventory, treasure and upgrade systems from RE4 for ones that are quick and don't need to interrupt the other player. Find someone to play splitscreen with and the game will get significantly better.

  • WhiteZinfandelWhiteZinfandel Your insides Let me show you themRegistered User regular
RE5's inventory system gets infinitely better when you realize two things:

1: You can reload by moving ammo onto your gun in the inventory

2: You can use your inventory while your character climbs a ladder or stomps someone in the balls or whatever

I played it on the 360 though. I imagine you couldn't go quite as fast on PC.

Why wouldn't it be fast on PC? You just drag and drop.

Here's a cool trick that might not be necessary in the campaign, but is pretty damn handy when playing The Mercenaries in RE5. When an enemy is staggered and you get a prompt to do a melee attack, start reloading and then press the button to melee. You cancel the reload, but your gun is loaded. And if you do a "low" melee attack from behind, it instantly kills the enemy. So you can shoot a guy once or twice in the leg, walk past him until the melee attack prompt changes (I think it's neck snap for Chris), reload and cancel it with the melee kill.

There was an interview on IGN that Im surprised that no one posted here. It was with the director, or someone equally high up, of RE6. Not much was said, but he did say:

-The gameplay styles will be different. Didnt CONFIRM it, but sounded like he was saying Leon is more original RE style, Chris is action and new dude is an all new style.

-There are NUMEROUS returning unannounced characters. I'm hoping this means cameo city. I want Sheva back, working with Chris, personally. I don't want her playable, I just want her on the radio once or something.

-Old fashioned zombies will be returning. not plagas, not uroburos, but Leon's stuff in Tall Oaks is REmake style zombies.

I believe he said that "they have many characters left to announce", so that doesn't necessarily mean that they will be returning characters.

I, too, long for many cameos, but I've given up hope that Capcom is actually going to pay any attention to Claire at this point. I'm expecting a Mercenaries DLC appearance, at best.

It'd be really infuriating if Sherry was in and Claire wasn't, given the outstanding issues between the two characters, but we'll see.

I can't believe I missed this announcement. Setting seems a bit uninspired (after rural Spanish village & castle and Africa we get what seems to be an American small town, an Asian megacity and some European (?) snow-covered village, bleh).

I hope we get whatever it is people loved so much about RE4, and the (non-mandatory) co-op gameplay from RE5

also, I second the notion of bringing back Sheva. But playable. And I only accept Tribal Sheva.

What's wrong with down-to-earth locations? Resident Evil started out in manors and American small towns, and that was very atmospheric.

for me, it's mostly a case of 'been there, done that'. I don't really like how the locations are spread out around the globe this time, I'd rather they'd stick to one unique, interesting place that we get to explore from top to bottom.

I originally played RE5 alone back when it first came out. AI Shiva felt like I was escorting a dumb yet faithful dog through a landscape she didn't really know how to comprehend. She'd put herself into stupidly dangerous situations for no real good reason and completely fuck up my plans on a regular basis but I still liked her because she was trying so hard.

I just started a new play through with a very capable coop partner and while the game is so much more enjoyable, suddenly Shiva as a character kinda pisses me off.

I agree with this, but it seems to me like splitting it up into different characters and scenarios might be for the better, considering the direction they've been heading. They can focus on an interesting place to explore for Leon, fast-paced action gameplay for Chris, and whatever for the other guy without the need to muddle one scenario up with all three at once. Hopefully.

Plus hopefully they're wound around each other in some fashion. I'd hate to have to 100% leon before having to 100% chris then finally getting to the new guy who may or may not be hunk. Alternating chapters or something. Or maybe each chapter you can chose who's events you want to play first so say I play leon 3rd in chapter 1 but I'm not ready for a break from old school zombie killing, I'll play him first in chapter 2. Just some integration is all I ask.

Sounds weird to do 3 different styles when they couldn't get one right with RE5. But then again one of the major things wrong with RE5 is that it's at full blast at all times. If they intertwine the stories they could possibly use them to improve the pacing.

I really loved the pacing and atmosphere of RE4. I hope that makes a comeback in RE6. I really like the intense action but it needs to be interspersed with periods of spooky exploration and puzzle solving (if even light). That's what I think RE4 really nailed.

On a different note... I'm now up to Chapter 3 of RE5. I'm finding the game less annoying as I get used to it. Inventory management is still a nightmare but I'm making due. I wish I could purchase a larger inventory like in RE4, but oh well, what you gonna do?

Question... What are the best guns in RE5, and which ones should I give to AI Sheva? I don't want to invest my hard earned money upgrading a crappy gun just because I didn't know better. Which ones should I concentrate on upgrading all the way?

I would give her the high powered stuff since she's going to be way more accurate then you are. Bolt action, AK, and maybe the M9.
Seriously with the fully upgrade M9 you essentially get a free inventory slot because you can throw any pistol ammo you find into its 100 rd magazine.

As for upgrades, generally each gun in a class has one standout stat- reload speed, power, accuracy, and so on.
The AK has the highest power of the automatics, the PSG-1 has a higher zoom, the bolt-action essentially becomes a magnum, the m500 kills damn near everything in one shot, the DEagle is rapid fire/reload magnum (but also the weakest).
