What I played of Revelations on the 3DS (before I returned mine) was not scary in the sense that games can be scary.
But it did have a nice, even subdue action atmosphere. The Mercenaries game kind of disappointed me, so I wasn't that interested in Revelations, but it could definitely turn out to be very, very good on consoles. I don't really play RE games to be "frightened" at this point anyway.
Resident Evil developer Capcom has said that there is a possibility of a reboot for its 17-year-old survival-horror-turned-action-horror franchise.
Capcom's Masachika Kawata, producer of Resident Evil: Revelations, made the comments to Eurogamer during a discussion of his latest project, the Revelations remake for PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U.
Questioned on the likelihood of changes to the series after middling reviews of Resident Evil 6 and the suggestion of a more open-world approach, Kawata mentioned the possibility of a reboot.
"If we did [go with an open-world], we would want to preserve what Resident Evil is and what makes it appealing to fans, while also making it accessible to new players. It would almost entail having a slight reboot to get the series into a place where it would work with open-world gameplay. That's just a personal opinion.
"A lot of decisions would have to be taken before something like that is done to the series, but it is something that..." he trailed off. "There is a possibility."
Kawata has worked on every game in the series since the acclaimed Resident Evil 4, and on classic Capcom titles such as PN03, Onimusha and Dino Crisis before that.
But it's in the upcoming console version of Revelations, a game which reintroduced some of the atmosphere and classic horror of earlier entries in the series, that he sees clues to the future of the Resident Evil.
"Once we see Revelations released on consoles, we'll be looking very carefully at how the title is received and what feedback we get. I think we'll get a lot of input from the fanbase and the media on what it means for Resident Evil, and what it could mean for the future of the series. We'll definitely be looking at that as a signpost for where we need to be going next.
"Moving forward I can see us focusing even more on the horror aspect and fear in the series, and see us making something scarier than we have already."
Kawata talked extensively about changes to the series, but dismissed the idea this was a direct response to Resident Evil 6, a game that Capcom said had only been successful "to some degree". After a brisk period of sales around launch, the publisher later admitted that the game's final total was "certain to fall short of the plan".
"We don't want to respond directly to, for example, the reaction to Resident Evil 6," Kawata explained, "[rather than] taking a chance to re-examine the series as a whole within ourselves, within the company, and decide where we want to take it from there.
"If anyone is waiting for an open-world Resident Evil, I think it will certainly be quite a while," he continued. "So in the meantime, I recommend giving Revelations a try."
Resident Evil: Revelations is set to arrive for PC, PS3 and Wii U in the UK on 24th May.
It originally launched for 3DS in January last year. Sales were decent for 3DS games at the time, Kawata said, although Capcom would have liked "a little more".
"Going by the 3DS market at the time we released the game, it was definitely a success and we're certainly hoping we can repeat that success with the home console version.
"Given the large development costs we had on the 3DS version, we would have liked to have even a little more sales than we did in the end. But that doesn't mean we saw it as a failure by any means."
The new version of Revelations won't appear on PlayStation Vita, a decision Kawata shed more light on.
"The Vita is a very impressive piece of kit, but the fundamental concept of this release was to bring Revelations to home consoles. It's not a statement about the Vita or what it is, or my personal feelings towards it. It's just that this is the big screen, home console version of Resident Evil: Revelations."
Vita sales figures - which trail the 3DS by some margin in Japan - were not a reason, he concluded.
"The conversation literally didn't even get to the point where something like that would be a consideration. Once the decision had been made to release it for home consoles it was never a possibility."

I wouldn't mind them rebooting this shit. DmC seems to be doing pretty well reviews-wise, and it would be the absolute perfect excuse for them to drop all the stupid baggage the series has accumulated and cook up a whole new strain of stupidity.
DmC's reboot was also handled out-of-house by a completely different dev team. Same with the excellent Castlevania reboot.
I wouldn't mind seeing a full franchise reboot for Resident Evil, but I think they should take creative control away from Capcom and let a western studio handle it.

Oh comeon... what's stopping them from just adding the new strain to the current baggage? Just like Umbrella bio-genetics!
I would like some new characters, but one thing I loved about this series was the evolving world. Granted that happened with the jump to 4 and the format change...

Well. I guess I would be fine with one.
I like a lot of the RE characters but I did feel like Wesker's death was a good ending point for this arc.
I don't mind if they stick with those same characters. I mean, when I think of Resident Evil, I specifically think of Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine since they were the originals in RE1. Plus the two of them have more sequel appearances than anyone else. I'd probably also lump Leon in as a staple of the series since he's the one and only protagonist in the best game in the series.
But I think a full reboot, back to ground zero, T-Virus outbreak would be healthy for the series. Streamline things, remove some of the unnecessary Japanese convoluted-ness that comes with it, and smooth out all the inconsistencies and retcons that have been made.

I like where the RE series went, and don't think there needs to be a reboot. I wouldn't lose my shit if they did reboot it though, I'd probably like whatever gets made.
If they wanted to pull a DmC and farm it out to a western dev team, I'd like to see they people at Visceral get a crack at it. Probably have to weave some magic for that to happen, though.

Well. Honestly, there were quite a few changes in RE6 that I enjoyed(the controls for one).
But I feel that the RE series biggest problem since 4 is that they don't know where to go with it. Like they don't know what ideas to keep and which ones to improve on, so they're kind of just throwing darts at a board.

This isn't even a RE thing. This is a Capcom thing and it's existed for as long as I can remember among their games.
They can do a reboot if they want. But the damn thing is going to become bloated as fuck again within 2 games. Because this is Capcom.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
Pretty much. I found myself wanting to remove some of my guns I had so many.
Also...please bring back weapon variety and upgrades.
I don't understand why they decided to downplay that in RE5 and remove it entirely in RE6. That was one of my favorite things about RE4.
Revelations has a limited, reworked upgrade system. There are upgrade kits that can be applied and removed from guns. These kits add attack power, round capacity, reload speed, etc. Guns can have 3 or so slots for upgrades. But you can always remove them and rework them to fit your style. 3 power kits on a shotgun? Sure! That sort of thing.
Revelations is easily the best Resident Evil since 4. I'm extremely happy to see that it's getting a full console re-release.
It would be even better if they announced some new features, such as split screen co-op. Jill and FatGuy are together for much of the game. It wouldn't be a stretch to include a co-op mode.

Or actually, I dunno. Yager. Someone other than in house Capcom. Young n' Hungry.
To be honest, best thing they could do? A new Raccoon City story. Doesn't need to contradict anything or even reboot anything - slap new gameplay on it, keep it in the established canon. A city is a big place. Plenty of opportunities for new stories there.

God, if we're rebooting, please Capcom, PLEASE, go out with a fucking colossal bang on this series that embraces the clusterfuck it became.
Wesker back and alive, give us Barry back, insane twins from Veronica's clones, T-Virus on the moon, Sheva teaming up with Ashley, robot everything.
I don't even care. I want it to end Metal Gear convoluted.
Then - the end? Somehow, someone has a time machine. And they decide to go back to Raccoon City. To when this all started. And do things differently to avoid this. And with the final cutscene, they throw the switch.
Literal reboot.

For a reboot, I would really really still want the first game to take place in a big creepy estate, with zombies. Basically I want an updated REmake, oh and RE2make, god how I love RE2.
I think a combination of RE1 + RE2 would be the best for a reboot.
Given how much faster paced the gameplay has become since RE4, giving us a single mansion to explore will not amount to much gameplay.
Start the game in a mansion. Take us through the woods, down the mountain, and into Raccoon City proper. Mansion, woods, and city would provide a nice variety of levels, which in turn would allow for a variety of scares, tension, and action.
I like where the RE series went, and don't think there needs to be a reboot. I wouldn't lose my shit if they did reboot it though, I'd probably like whatever gets made.

I don't mind the idea of a reboot, so long as they don't go back to sluggish, tank-controls of RE4. If the complaint is "not enough feeling of urgency, unknown and despair" there are other ways to do it besides "can't aim and move--even slowly--at all". That seems more like punishment at this point more than anything. Funny thing, I don't think Capcom will make that mistake (and they do make mistakes).
Obviously, bringing back stupid weapons like a scoped mine-layer wouldn't address the problems in the game. The skill system vs. weapons upgrade/body armor does make me wonder. People seem very much attached to weapons upgrades, even if the skill system was better (which it wasn't necessarily), so it seems reasonable enough to go back for the fans. Honestly, some aspects of the weapons were handled way better in RE6 than RE4--not being too afraid to include secondary fire modes (grenade launchers, fire settings--really no excuse whatsoever for not having those on automatic weapons), and that's before we consider the whole melee weapons mechanic, which is not just completely new, but actually works really well (weapons with bayonets should be more powerful in a setting where knives are "civilization").
So where do we go from here? Well, if your're going to include AK-74M and M-16 rifles, why not make a bayonet an upgrade at the "store", whatever that might be? Same for scopes, rates of fire, recoil, etc. Not a fan of the magazine capacity upgrade, but that's just me. Or, on the flip side, move away from a reliance on so many big weapons. You can make it about pistols and shotguns, especially with the new melee system. We don't need each character to be a walking armory, which is basically where we've been heading since RE4, thank to that and not having to come to a dead halt to do anything else.
CHapter 1 of Leon's campaign was the best zombie thing the RE series has done in a long time. If they want to reboot, set the game entirely in Raccoon, and have the characters control exactly like they did in RE6. Gimmie a character as badass as Helena was with her Hydra, and go from there.
Seriously, Helena was great. Max Payne shoot dodging with the Hydra, and dropping elbows on downed zombies.

The beginning of Leon's campaign and sections of his China campaign were indeed very zombie-tastic. More that, less mutated mercs shooting at you.
Huh. That's interesting. I'm liking RE6 too. Not done with it yet, finished with Leon and in the middle of Chris'. But I thought Leon's campaign was (first) half boring, (second) half good. I'm enjoying Chris' a lot more. but then I'm one of those people who doesn't care how different RE6 is from previous games.
The cemetery was probably the worst part of Leon's. I assume replaying the university would be tedious, too.
I know I sound really negative, but I do like the game.

Don't worry about it. It's difficult not to sound really negative when talking about RE6. It is a seriously flawed ass game, no matter how much one might personally enjoy it/parts of it.

The real problem was that you had too many guns.
I never had to conserve any ammo in RE6. I always had excess.
Of course it might have been due to using melee attacks a bit too much.
