So it occurs to me that the indie games scene has given us the ultimate tribute to old-school top-down shooters with Jamestown, and with Titan Attacks we seem to also have the zenith of Space Invaders clones.
Now all we need is for some indie developer of, say, Final Form Games' caliber to take on the task of making a love letter to run-and-gun shooters like Metal Slug.
Yes. Yes they do.
Bonus points if we get an announcer enthusiastically yelling "RAWKIT LAWNCHAIR" whenever you pick up a rocket launcher.
Oh man I want a badass indie Metal Slug style game for the PC so bad.
I'm gonna go learn coding and game design and soundwork and pixel art and then get started on one.
See you guys in a year!
I always get a similar vibe to Metal Slug when I play Shank.
Cool. Fallout is one of the games that I have to get off-Steam, since they only sell the German-language version, which I loathe. I already got FO3 GOTY from eBay UK, so that's cool, can't wait to get around to try it.
Of course, I still own both FO3 and FONV on Steam, but I don't wanna play them. My name is busfahrer, and I have a problem.
FOR THE NEWELL
If you have New vegas on steam already, then you cant GET another version. Not really. The game is steamworks.
I still get a William Gibson boner every time the idea of data smuggling is mentioned in this thread.
Wait, what?
I've read Neuromancer, but it's been a while...
To me the idea of covertly transferring data brings up the mental image of a young man, breathing heavy from running but trying not to be heard as he peeks his head over the edge of a dumpster that he is hiding behind in a dark, rain slicked alley. It's nighttime, and although it's a moonless night you'd never be able to tell. Anyway, neon light pollution bouncing back from the smog keeps the city streets brighter than the moon ever could.
He waits, watching every car that passes, until he sees the flashing lights of an Arcadia City Police Department patrol car speed by. He relaxes a little, and the breathing gets easier. He places his hand over his pants pocket and double checks that it's there. A portable hard drive, containing data he pulled from a server before its Newell AI guardian hit him with the most powerful security he'd ever seen. He'd heard of black ICE before, but thought it was just a rumor made up by the old console cowboys who had aged out of the hacking business, washed up glory hounds who spent more time at the bar than they did in cyberspace. He could still feel pain from the burn where his jack had overheated. He'd barely made it out in time. He'd sat on the floor of his apartment, eyes burning, until he heard the sirens. They had traced him. He made it down to the street before he'd been spotted, and the ensuing chase made him feel like he had ran through half the city before he lost them. He didn't even have time to grab his deck.
He didn't know what the data was, something called FoNV.STM that had just hit the server. What he did know was that his fence downtown knew someone in Germany who wanted it, and he was willing to pay well to get it. Enough for a new deck. Maybe even enough for a new life, somewhere quiet, calm, where he wouldn't have to hustle cyberspace for a living, risking getting his central nervous system fried or worse with each new job.
He stood up. He had to get off the street. He knew a cheap hotel that was a few blocks away where he could lay low for the night before stopping by his fence in the morning. The beds weren't very comfortable, but they took cash, and they didn't ask questions. As he headed deeper into the alleyway, one thought resonated over and over again in his mind - "I've got to find a new line of work".

Yeah, "data smuggling" in the context of the PA Steam thread is just simply PMing someone a Steam Key in exchange for a few bucks on Paypal or whatever, but in my head it's an awesome cyberpunk adventure.
Busfahrer, do you really not have an option of switching it to English? On Fallout: New Vegas properties -> language, I have the options of English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. Or is it a low-violence version that is only available in German? Haven't other people been able to get Steam support to exchange that with the regular version?

When you visit the German version of FONV's steam store page, it says that the low-violence version is only available in German. I wouldn't mind the low-violence, but I can't stand translations. I might perhaps try contacting support. But to be honest, I gotta play FO3 first, and that's not the only game, so all this is pretty hypothetical talk, I guess. Sorry to waste your time

your post made me go take a look at Jamestown's steam page and it looks like something I might find appealing. Anyone want to weigh in on this game? what it is like, if it is fun, and most importantly, is it worth getting?

Guys, I messed up.
Last night my 3 year old son was playing with a toy train and I said, "You want to see a choo choo game?" He said yeah, so I loaded up Railworks. He was mesmerized. He was almost scared to touch the mouse when he has never been before. Almost reverential. When that steam engine gave that first puff of smoke, he actually said, "wow". I finally had to turn it off when it was bath time, and he threw a fit.

Wow, that is kind of awesome, but man. You're going to be paying for that mistake for a long time.

And herein lies the sad, cautionary tale of how Railworks bankrupted a family man all because he just wanted to endear his son with a choo-choo game.
Let this forever be a lesson for all you people out there.

Just made me laugh, because I saw you on my friends list last night, playing said game. Then it made me think of the topic (on here I think) of people buying this game simply because it was on sale. You've given your 3 year old the gift of trains and steam. Starting him young. I can't wait to have kids and corrupt them with video games.

It's pretty great. SNES graphics space shooter with an interesting power-up mechanic and four ships (the DLC adds 3 more) that all have unique special powers. And it supports 4 player local coop and has a lot of optional stages. Even if you end up being bad at it, it's absolutely gorgeous to look at.

It was pretty impressive, actually, because when he wanted to touch the mouse, I thought he just wanted to move the camera around like he sometimes does with other games, but nope, he knew what those levers were and wanted to manipulate them. He looked at me and asked, "Red down?" I said sure and it was pure joy.
But then we missed our timetable and I made him sit in the closet to think about what he had done.

Also, the soundtrack is pretty bitchin'
The dev deserves to be immortalized alongside Cave, Zun or Treasure for dishing out the hardcore dakka. My only beef is the lame hand-holdy difficulty settings in which lesser difficulties have less levels, until you get to "Legendary" which is just "Normal." But that's very minor, because once you get the hang of Normal, you never go back.
Does anyone happen to have a Sega/Sonic Generations coupon laying around? I'd happily trade some of my own coupons for one. I want to buy Sonic Generations for someone, and I figured I'd see if anyone has an unused coupon before I went and bought it.
I have these, if anyone is interested:

-33% Bethesda
-50% Max Payne 2
-50% Costume Quest
-50% Zeno Clash
-50% F1 2001
-50% Fallout Collection

Jamestown really is a gem of a game. Its presentation is the most outstanding of any shoot-em-up in recent memory (and it also doesn't hurt that it is very proficient as a hardcore shmup). Good, good times.
Jamestown deserves honor for demonstrating the radical premise that it's possible to make a bullet hell game that does not involve sexualized underage cartoon girls.

The stories for both are unrelated, so you can play either without missing anything.

The Fallout Collection is just Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics. It doesn't include 3 or New Vegas.
I just finished another assassination in Assassin's Creed 1. I can't be bothered to remember who it was as they all blend together. It was the first assassination where I wondered if I'd just done it horribly wrong. It was the guy who was going to execute four people. He said something and then all the guards in the crowd started attacking me even though I was holding down the blend button the whole time I was there. I managed to trap the target in a corner and just went to work on him, but it didn't seem like that was the way to go. Maybe my thought process of "I'm supposed to sneak in, kill him, then sneak out with minimal attention" is wrong. Stabbing the guy in the face in the middle of an army then running like hell through the city seems to be the tactic of choice.
