It's unfortunate that the fact that they don't want to ban Snapcaster in Standard has forced them to bend over backwards engineering high power-level cards to hose it.

Dryad Militant and Ash Zealot would probably not see print as-is if they hadn't printed Snapcaster, or had banned it. You can make a very strong case for Dryad Militant being the most powerful creature ever printed at either the G or W cost (Noble Hierarch and Mother of Runes are the only ones that come close IMO), and you can make a similar case for Ash Zealot being the most powerful creature ever printed at RR.

I don't hate either card, and I don't think they're broken, but I dislike when cards are so transparently engineered to solve a particular problem in Constructed.

They reeeeeally don't like banning cards from standard. Every time they've done it it's been hamhanded and a basic admission they did something obviously, retardedly stupid.

True, and I agree they should err on the side of banning too few cards, as opposed to too many.

That said, I think Snapcaster was pretty clearly a mistake on power-level. It's not as horribly format-warping as Jace and Stoneforge were, but it's not all that far off.

As has been noted before, when a card is just bad, it's deliberate on the part of R&D. When a card is banned for being too good, it's a mistake that probably got some of them yelled at.

Yea, the thing about Snapcaster was it was an invitational design-a-card prize. That prize, while awesome, was obviously a terrible idea and that's why no one gets to do it anymore, but I think it still has enough cache that they don't want to ban one.

to be fair it does cover like three different decks while being one card, so instead of having Tormod's and Grudge you'd only need one sideboard slot (or more obviously for multiples)

but again I have no idea what's big in standard so while I can tell this is nearly 100% sideboard in that format I really don't know how it stacks up to other deck counters

Then again this was the same kid who went to a card shop, bought a pack, pulled the rare out and left without the rest of the pack.
When the shop owner shouted back to this kid he was already at his mother's car. He proceeds to try run back and cross the street through traffic to retrieve his cards.
He was struck by a vehicle and broke his leg, for a pack of Magic cards...
At least we got to push him around school in his wheel chair for a few months.

I wouldn't really call it degenerate if it requires multiple unplayable cards as well as another creature.
I guess it could see some play in a Reforge the Soul deck? It can try to replace Kuldotha Rebirth and Burn at the Stake.

Correct. The verbiage surrounding 'playing' a card has been changed to 'casting' it. You have to play a card to trigger something that requires 'cast a spell'. It is one of muddier and more inconsistent regions of the CR but ultimately copy effects do not qualify.

with the exception of Isochron Scepter and Panoptic Mirror, anyway

but then those two are weird because of how Imprint functions

edit: also I guess if you stacked things right it'd be three Hymns; the original being cast, Dual Cast in response to the Weird's trigger, then Dual Cast again after the trigger resolves

With the combination of Dual Casting and Blistercoil Weird, could you still copy a spell twice? Basically, make a copy, then let the original resolve to untap the Weird and then tap him again to make another copy?

My instinct says that no, you can't, because the copy goes on the stack on top of the original, so even though you control both effects, you can't force the actual spell to resolve before the copy does.

you can, but you have to do the first copy in response to the Weird's trigger

that way you have one copy, the Weird trigger and the original on the stack, the copy resolves, Weird untaps, and the original is still there for you to copy again

Looking over Nivmagus Elemental, I'm convinced it's going to take Delver and somehow make it even more annoying. It will be a regular thing to have it do 5 damage on turn 2.

    Turn 1: Land, Nivmagus Elemental
Turn 2: Land, fire two 1-drop cantrips to buff it +4/+4, swing for 5 (15)
Turn 3: Land, cantrip, swing for 7 (8)
Turn 4: Land, cantrip, swing for lethal.

    It doesn't need a degenerate combo (although I agree, there's gotta be one out there). It's a 1-drop that becomes, effectively, a 2-drop 3/3, a 3-drop 5/5, a 4-drop 7/7 and so on and so forth.

Yes, it's vulnerable to removal. So is any non-hexproof/shroud creature. Delver took over the format being a 1-drop 3/2. This is a 1-drop that gets +2/+2 counters from any cantrip in your deck.

I've already drawn up a U/R Delver decklist with NE and Vexing Devil. I'm going to start proxying that sucker now. I think we'll end up calling it F*** You. It's going to be so consistant it'll be sickening.
