Help remembering name of author/title of sci-fi series

I read it years ago and all I can remember is that it's a sci-fi series that starts with a portal to another dimension being opened accidentally on some backwater planet, but the portal allows the dead (no matter how long ago they died) to come through and take over someone's body. They retain their intelligence and memories, so they're not zombies. It starts on this one planet and before the rest of humanity realizes what happened, it starts to spread to other planets. From what I recall, they can open other portals so some of them would travel incognito as normal humans to other systems and then open portals there. Eventually the government and military realize what's happening and they struggle to contain the threat by quarantining whole systems, but some of the "recently dead" start acquiring their own fleets to fight back with. Some historical figures come back, both good and evil and at first I remember humanity is just terrified of them all and is focused on just ending the invasion and wiping them all out. But over time they start to realize they're not all evil, and there are different factions within the recently dead even fighting among themselves.

Does anyone have a clue what series I'm talking about?

Ok, you can lock this thread. I figured out it's the Night's Dawn trilogy by Peter Hamilton.
