is it that movie about a rich white lady and a poor black kid who teach each other how to love
It's a story about a white Christian family in Texas that adopts a poor black kid living on the streets. Eventually he starts playing football, gets damned good at it, and gets into the NFL.
The (incendiary, but ultimately true) moral of the story is that black people are hopeless, unless pitied by the white man.
The thing that gets me about The Blind Side is that the best most interesting part of the book is the analysis of the rise of the importance of Left Tackle as a strategic position in on the football field. Which has absolutely nothing to do with the fictionalised heartwarming tale that the movie portrays (although that is also kind of explored in the book).
On the other hand, the success of The Blind Side paved the way for other interesting sports analysis books to be optioned into movies, leading directly to Moneyball. So there's that, I guess.
primary difference
looking only at movies
Blind Side, shit
Moneyball, excellent.
Yeah, not disputing that. But as someone familiar with the book, I find the adaptation... odd.
It's like if someone had made an adaptation of Marcus Aurelius'sMeditations and the movie it turned into turned out to be Gladiator.
It's just like "Really? That's what you got out of the book?".

No it's about how great white people are.
At least 70% of all movies ever made could be described with that one sentence.
I don't have nostalgia for Transformers. I feel like that is a key factor in gaining enjoyment out of those films. And I thought the second movie was atrocious, so I'm not really in any hurry.

actually, having no brain is the key factor to gaining enjoyment out of those films
i am the biggest transformers fangirl on the forums and I can't defend the movies more than halfheartedly

I thought so too. The third one makes up for it in spades.
This is the first year in quite a long time where I think I've seen literally nothing nominated for any category. Wow.
So, what did you watch this year?
I'm genuinely curious and not trying to be snide.
Hmm.
Not much, to be honest. I moved in the middle of the year away from the people I would normally see movies with. I saw Thor, X-Men, Mission Impossible and Harry Potter. I think that might be it.
I had interest in seeing Moneyball, Drive, Hugo, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Maybe a couple other things that I can't think of at the moment.
Also my job eating up a lot of time is another factor. I usually like to watch a lot of movies otherwise.

Ah, I've been there. I've missed so many movies this year due to being broke for most of it. I've kicked it into over drive this fall though since I now have some money and nothing to do but work and be in my room.
Anyway, definitely check out those movies. I haven't seen The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo yet, but the original was great and I'm sure Fincher would do it justice.
Is Mission Impossible as sick as it looks? I haven't managed to check it out yet and I don't trust any of my friends when it comes to that kind of flick.

It was very good. I was pretty impressed, because I remember people being positive about MI3 but personally not really feeling much after seeing it. But this one was really solid pretty much the entire way through. The Burj Khalifa scenes in particular are pretty great. It struck a good balance for the action pacing. No real lulls or anything that caused sensory overload. Hard to do in action movies these days.
Honestly it's hard for me to remember what happened in 3 at all. I remember being kind of annoyed that Phillip Seymour Hoffman was ultimately inconsequential and underutilized. I can't say I was all that thrilled about the macguffin plot device either.
4's plot is a bit more straightforward, and not exactly super compelling, but it held things together well enough. I felt the dialogue and humor was well done. It's not just Simon Pegg being super silly or anything.
And say what you will about Tom Cruise but he's still pretty awesome in these sorts of films, despite being almost 50. Pretty sure he did the Burj Khalifa stunts without a double, which gets some respect from me.

Awesome. A lot of action flicks these days fall into sensory overload by having nonsensical action. There's no way to follow it. There's no sense of movement and space. There's no investment. I figured Brad Bird was better than that.
I'll probably check it out right after I finally see Hugo in 3D.

I don't really have any investment in the franchise beyond Animated, but I don't know how far nostalgia can take you with those films. They're filled to the brim with absurd, frequently racist caricatures and most of the robot forms are ugly as sin. Honestly the only reason I didn't walk out of the cinema in 2 was because I was with a friend. There may be worse movies out there but it is easily my least favourite.
I haven't seen the third movie, but just like you I have no plans to after 2.

Possibly both.

It is however super easy to make silly conclusions like we have just done.

We have organized a pub crawl entitled 'The blindsiding of [Counsin's Name]'
Because it is a bunch of white folks taking in a black man and showing him how to live
And also because he shouldn't be able to see by the end of the night
Uh-oh I accidentally deleted my signature. Uh-oh!!

Not even Harry Potter Part 2 or Transformers? Even I saw those.
And Peter Cullen deserves a Lifetime Achievement Award for being Optimus.
I really enjoyed TF3, mostly for
dude it's been a long fucking time since you went to the movies
You're right I almost missed Harry Potter having a nomination. I did see that. Okay so I've seen one thing nominated for something.
No I did not see Transformers. I don't hate myself that much.
my family got the home release and i watched it then
Guess I need to see them before they exit theaters now.
It was honestly pretty great. Optimus steals the show.

try to see Hugo in 3D if you can

It was about as good as three.
Like the other ones though, it has a different tone to 1, which was my favourite.

had some fantastic action scenes and characteristic Brad Bird character work
also that French girl was cute as hell

but yes Hugo in 3D should be a priority for everyone because goddamn
Last movie I saw was Arrietty, which was really gorgeous.
and the best action scene in the past decade was the opening of JCVD
