I really want to dress up as mercedes or olivia from grim fandango for halloween sometime, but I don't know how to do it justice. and no one would get it.

So it seems like my hair takes really well to wet styling methods. I can't use heat on it because it just doesn't last, but I have found that I can both straighten and curl/wave it with water. My hair is fairly straight, having developed a wave at its ends in the past few years. It is actually kind of odd how much my hair has changed texture in just a few years, it has volume now.
I sort of discovered how to straighten my hair by accident. I returned home for a weekend from the dorms and simply . . . shampooed and dried a bit differently. I shampooed twice and used conditioner. Normally I only shampoo once and don't use conditioner (because my scalp is oily so conditioner is just a bonus). My hair looked significantly straighter and I wasn't sure why at first. I've tried recreating it at the dorms to moderate results; I don't have conditioner and it seems to make a big difference. I step out of the shower then immediately brush it. My hair is pretty strong so I don't worry about this ruining my hair.
I otherwise don't dry my hair though. Putting it up in a turban is much neater and I'm not dripping everywhere but that seems to be instrumental in giving my hair a more pronounced wave then it already has. Combing it down straight and letting it just sort of hang flat still dripping wet, seems to weigh my hair down with the water so it dries into a straight shape.
I got a lot of compliments, I was just dripping for an hour! Less manual work than using a straightening iron though, and better for my hair in the long run I think.
I dunno, maybe this will work for someone else here too?
I only know what my friend who is taking me is wearing. She's just wearing a plain skirt but pairing with cat ears for her "costume".
Apparently the adults are a bit lazier about what they wear. So she's told me anyway.
That is really lazy, but at least you know not to go mad. I'd just go for something really simple where you only need one or two items to wear. Though what is it up to you!

I've got a fox tail that I was going to wear and just some mildly dramatic eye makeup.
That way I can hide the tail under my coat while we're out without looking like a weirdo.

I have a friend who loooves making costumes, hers are always so fun! Once it was Disney, and she was Stitch from Lilo and Stitch; she made herself extra arms. And another time it was a superhero theme, so she was Safetypin Girl, with a cape and everything. And she also made herself an awesome steampunkish corset which she paired with a top hat and monocle for a steampunk theme.
I was the enormous turnip once for a children's book theme at school! It was a pretty effective costume made from cardboard which my dad put together at the last minute. The problem was he made me wear my school uniform underneath, and I couldn't sit down in the cardboard, so I was the only kid in school that day in uniform.
@usagi at what step during your facial regimen do you use the serum?
Right now the order is wash, toner, serum, moisturizer and it seems to work well. The serum definitely helps me use less moisturizer on the drier bits of my face.

this immediately made me think of the calvin and hobbes story arc with the school play
Yeah, my concern with my short hair/oily skin combo is that if it gets on my scalp I'll be super greasy. But I'll try it as a heat protectant!
Use a tiny amount and apply it mainly to the ends (or at least the outer 50% of your length of hair); that's what they recommend even for those of us with dry hair. I use Kerastase's Elixir Ultime (which has a very high percentage of argan oil and it smells sooooo pretty and it's also much lighter than other similar treatments out there).
I use it before AND after blowdrying, and it controls frizz, makes my hair feel super soft, and also gives it an even glossier shine.
What the fuck, that is really cool! How did you do it?

it is called OPI Shatter, a crackle-effect varnish for nails

Aw it's no big thing. It's white nail polish (OPI Alpine White) with the Pink Shatter Topcoat, which is basically like distress paint. You paint it on like normal polish then as it dries it shrinks and breaks apart!

You are encouraged to go in some sort of costume. Why am I not more creative?
Blargh. But I'm not going to turn down any sort of celebration that encourages people to get drunk.

calvin dresses up as an onion for a school play and gets stuck in the costume in the bathroom when he's supposed to say his line
I love calvin and hobbes sooo much
My nails right now.
That was amazing. Purim should be every week.

I feel like such a success at my first Jewish outing. Isn't this what Jewish girls are supposed to aim for?
I might change them tomorrow night for a wedding I have to go to on Saturday; something that matches my dress or accessories, I think
to be fair he remembered his line!
I loved his costume, it was super adorbz

My friend told me I'm not allowed to go with her anymore. I guess I'm not a good wing-man.
I also keep missing girl hints. Like invitations to go to the bathroom together so that we can talk about the men who are waiting for us.
I'm terrible.
I know! I laughed out loud at that strip. maybe I'll go as an onion for halloween.
That is really funny.
In theory, this would make it seem like you are a better wing-man for a guy.
