I think reVerse is right, some kind of border around the text could help. Shouldn't be a difficult thing, simply do the text in black as a slightly larger font, perhaps only 1 pixel. Then on a new layer do the same for the color you want. As long as you set the text in the same place, it should only take a bit of moving around with the move tool to line it up.
I will do this tomorrow after work, as you say, not too difficult.

I could do it if you can provide the image, I'm pretty handy with GIMP.
And all the BAAAAWWWING from the gits who obviously love nothing more than fucking with some poor low level while they quest is delicious.
Delicious, delicious griefer tears.
Actually that reminds me of when I was playing a Shaman back in Vanilla WoW leveling in the Tarren Mill area (around lvl 23ish? can't remember the place) where a lvl 60 Hunter decided to gank me. He was killed moments later by a lvl 53 Druid. I laughed at him. I didn't see that Hunter again.
The ultimate shame in vanilla WoW: being killed by a druid.
I played almost exclusively on PvE servers, but one time while I was leveling my druid in Stranglethorn when I came across a paladin several levels above me who was flagged (almost certainly from killing the tauren who traveled along the road in that zone). I decided to take a break and see if I could kill him.
Queue like 20 minutes of me killing him over and over again despite our level difference. I would just stealth around as kitty and wait for him to res and heal up, then pounce on him. Apparently, he did not realize that if he just didn't fight me for 5 minutes he would become unflagged, but he eventually signed onto a horde character to bitch at me.
We're old-school DAoC players here and we really miss that 3-way mash-up in fights that a two-faction game simply can't equal. It won't be completely the same since all three sides are going to be completely equal; one of the most fun parts of DAoC was knowing that your enemies had different but equal setups. Still, the promise of objective-based, open-world PvP with an easy to reach cap and no outrageous stat/level/gear imbalances....
this is what im looking for too but just putting in some 3way pvp battles is pretty whatever, like capping a keep in a bg was fun, for a while. the keeps and towers in the frontiers actually mattered for realm bonuses and defending the relics, and gaining realm levels, those are the sort of incentives they need for pvp longevity!

Druid vs Druid was the best. Eventually you both just got bored and walked away.
You should have watched a vanilla WoW Paladin duel. It was Epic!
...in that the duel went on for days at a time, not because it was exciting.

As for the picture editing, I've been using my Mac's built in media programs like iPhoto, which work great for contrast and stuff but oddly enough do not have text editing. So I was attempting to use various free online editing websites for the text thinking that it's pretty easy and shouldn't be too difficult to do. Thus were the blurry letters created.
Any picture help would also obviously be appreciated, I'm more focused on the stream and want a simple header and background setup for the channel for now, no need to get fancy. The base image with my effects added is here: http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/7962/corehealerchannelheader.jpg

For us, simply playing in a 8-man roaming group was plenty of fun and the reward of killing the other people you ran across (or trying to at the very least) was fulfilling enough. neither of us felt a need to be incentivized in any way to murder online people. The very act of doing the murder was it's own reward.
Having said that, supposedly (as others have noted) the winning servers in WvWvW will get some sort of world-wide buff for the next two-week period. And they would need to keep winning to keep that buff.
PS: I turn down beta slots all the time because I already have invites for other games and, quite honestly, I simply don't have enough time to play everything. I look at beta access as a "job" and if I cannot devote enough effort to provide worthwhile feedback to the devs, then I shouldn't be in the beta.

WvWvW rewards all who participate, especially the winning server obviously. Beyond server buffs, groups/guilds and individuals are rewarded with gear and presumably other stuff like titles. Those are the incentives, but the real reason to play PvP in theory is the thrill of the kill and to glory in the slaughter of your player enemies. WvWvW to me looks like the perfect perpetual battle which precludes griefing and PvE/PvP overlap in favour of focusing the PvP into a true battleground. Something that your invested in fighting for. Your not just in it for the valor marks or whatnot. Your there to kick that ranger over there in the shin for thinking his server's better then yours, and steal his fort.

Have you considered using the GW2 asset kit to create your banner?

I actually remember that from the last thread, and totally forgot about it! Thanks for reminding me. I shall give it a look.
EDIT: There's a few useful things in the asset kit, and oddly enough it has the game's box art (presumably a first draft at any rate), so that's cool. It also reminded me that the stream channel is conspicuously lacking in GW2 logos. And that I should change the fonts of the description and header to the fonts they use for web and in-game, which are Cronos and Eason Pro. I'll start digging into using some of it later tonight.
That actually makes me stop and think for a second.
Exactly how many MMOs released so have eschewed the whole "factions" system? I am seriously having trouble thinking of ones that have.
Many years ago, one cool aspect of Star Wars Galaxies was that you could switch from republic to imperial and back through quests and a bit of grinding.
I remember when I switched to imperial when most of my guild ran as republic and caused some interesting tension.
Unfortunately the whole experience was marred by horrible pvp combat and a complete lack of world pvp or any in depth pvp system.
I'm not sure how this is relevant except that to this day I'm still waiting to see a faction system that allows seamless switching like that one did.

Don't cover the face
The image used makes the eye move left to right, and putting the text in the bottom right makes it move diagonally down the page towards it, which is good
Consider making the shaded area slightly larger so the text isn't quite so close
Consider putting a gradient to 0% opacity where the text is not
Consider some sort of stroke on the text
Consider white or a lighter shade of blue
Personally I would bracket the text fully in a corner, and not leave a little space

Last try, as I realized I had f.lux running which was distorting colors (so I did change the font color), and I don't wanna shit up the thread with all these revisions:

I love you guys. Thanks Sark. I'll take this last one with the italics.
And REG, I have Charr all over the background of the stream channel, and I intend to have Charr feature prominently in the content of the stream. And by prominent, I mean I'll be playing one and chances are high all us charr lovers here will be in the stream at one time or another as well when we hit up stuff in game.
I want to make this a community thing, to add something special to showcase the game's emphasis on community and cooperation through our excursions into dungeons, PvP and everyday dynamic event exploring.
It's okay, Entaru. I'm going human first, sylvari secondary, mostly because those were the races I felt like pairing with thief and elementalist. I couldn't resist the urge to play a tree who likes to burn things.
Want to find me on a gaming service? I'm SwashbucklerXX everywhere.

This problem only recently occurred to me because nobody would be so foolish to make something GW2 related without including charr would they?
