Anyone else getting a bit tired of the "GW2 is going to be like this because WoW" stuff?

Last month is was, "Meh, everyone's going to FORCE the trinity to work because herp WoW".

Now it's, "Everyone's going to play Hunters and Paladins, I mean, Rangers and Guardians because herp WoW."

Yeah, I'm just a grouchy old man, but dammit kids, get off my lawn with your WoW.

Those census polls are basically useless outside of predicting what the initial wave of characters might look like. Rather up in the air whether or not that initial Mesmer wave sticks around or rerolls.

I'm somewhat surprised that I don't have any interest in playing an Engineer.... something about the class doesn't feel right to me (and I thoroughly enjoyed the TF2 engineer). Though I think I'll have to make a Charr one at some point. Ranger I have more interest in than I would have expected, but I'll have to see how the class works out.

So Elementalist looks pretty damn fun, but boy oh boy are the fire effects crazy huge. The moment you use them, the entire screen is a mess of red and orange and you can't see anything D:

If you are going to stay in the genre, get used to it. Every game is a WoW-Clone (according to some). Some actually are (looking at you, RIFT), some aren't. I'd say if someone calls it a WoW clone (or tries to imply something has to be done X-way because WoW did it), either ignore them... or ignore them.

Well, RIFT and SWTOR basically straight up said they were 'WoW with _____' (Rifts and VA/Story respectively), so completely fair in those cases :p

Just like all isometric action RPGS are Diablo clones, every FPS is a Doom clone, etc, just the nature of things. WoW may not have been the first (or second, or third...), it was the biggest and for better or worse it's now what 'MMORPG' gets associated with.

Divinity's Reach video is need, makes me think of taking the main city in Cantha in GW1 and merging it all down into one much-nicer looking place. (On that note - I hope an expansion brings Cantha back just so we can see Kaineng updated/250 years later)

Doesn't that make the point all the more relevant?

Also I wasn't at all interested in this until I saw the WvW stuff. I love me some pvp, and Rift (as much as I like it) pretty much has pvp as less than an afterthought.

Which is sad. Why are we using the same measuring stick, when we know that it's borked.

I want to believe that GW2 isn't trying to be a WoW killer, because it's not trying to be WoW. I don't ever want to say, "Oh, well if you liked WoW, you'll love GW2". GW2 is going to be successful because it's going to be an awesome game that's going to stand on its own merits.

Again, popularity does not equal to quality. It's also why when Blizzard throws out that 10+ million subscriber number, I grind my teeth, because I know it's total bullshit.

Anyway, the only thing that burns hotter than my hate for WoW is my GW2 boner. That thing is like a million suns x 10.

Also Kaineng city is probably a shit hole that's been half flooded/half fallen right into the sea. The place is in some pretty shitty condition even during the original game, I think the whole tides rising cause of Zhaitan's awakening will fuck them over.

Hell just redo all of GW1 with the new engine, no lack of awesome places that could use a revist (Fire Islands, Crystal Desert, Sulfurous Wastes, Istani, everything in the Realm of Torment)

Given that it was a shithole in GW1, maybe the tidal waves cleaned it up a bit. I loved the concept of a giant packed city like that based off of the Kowloon Walled City, but the engine just couldn't elevate it beyond looking like a quake level.

Does the Realm of Torment even still exist, given the events at the end of Nightfall?

I hope so, because I'd be super psyched to get back in there. Given that some of the corrupted mob design I've seen for GW2 looks incredible, I'd love to see what they do with an entire environment.

Come to think of it, Orr will be a great preview of that sort of thing.

Come to think of it, Orr will be a great preview of that sort of thing.

It still exists (sorta has to, as it's part of the Mists and otherwise that's a lot of spirits with no where to go), would just be a question of whether or not it was accessible. I don't recall the Nightfall ending shutting down the vortex, so unless one of the post-ending quests in Nightfall has you doing something that would close the vortex seems like you could still visit, though given where the vortex is located there might be some complications getting to it due to the events between GW and GW2....
What do you mean, 'The Evil Undead Lord you freed and assisted in retaking his empire in order to get assistance in reaching the Vortex/Realm of Torment has gone on to conquer all of Elona after rebuilding his forces'? That was totally unexpected!

I also look forward to Orr simply because it'll be a completely new place that still ties into GW1.

Edit: Do we have an official SPOILERS policy for GW1 when talking about GW2? I know nothing in GW1 is particularly OMGWTFBBQ worthy (and there's like 3 plot twists in the entire series total, none of which are particularly surprising) but it seems like a lot of people playing through it for HoM right now so someone might care.

I would like to take a moment and point out the biggest flaw with these surveys:

Who takes surveys on the internet about a game that isn't out yet talking about what character they are planning on rolling up?

    Answer: Nerds like us.

But we are not going to be the great majority of players. We are just the vocal minority. So these surveys are always skewed. We are going to have very different tastes in what to play. The vocal minority is looking at mesmer as more complicated and potentially good for pvp trolling. These are things that the general population won't know about and won't care about.

For the former, I think that is partly due to general noobishness. However, the PvP isn't supposed to be very spiky.

Breaking down doors started going a whole lot faster once they actually used siege equipment. Probably still five minutes to knock down a gate, but hey.

The Jade Sea would be less literal in GW2 sadly - it slowly went back to being an actual sea between GW1 and GW2 due to Shiro's defeat. Can hold out hope they'll do some sort of 'flashback' quest series/pack to chronicle that so you can see the Jade Sea before it completely turns.

I think that's what's frustrating about watching Yogscast is that they don't understand the underlying mechanics of GW2. He spends the majority of the video talking about how exactly the guardian doesn't conform to his paladin expectations. Then he says that the guardian has no healing skills, when according to the wiki, the guardian has a trait line that improves healing, and Healing Breeze can be cast on others. Now we all know that there is no 'healer' archetype in this game, but as the classes go, guardian is a little more healy than say warrior.

It still felt very Paladin-y to me. I was using a mace and shield, so my loadout was:

Strike: Basic Attack, third hit heals you
Symbol of Faith: Small AOE attack, drops area on ground that heals allies
Protector's Strike: Drops you into a counter stance, you get hit, you strike your enemy. If not, you give a buff that lowers damage taken.
Shield of Judgment: Pushback Cone + Buff
    Shield of Absorption: Bubble

    Your heals are:
Shelter: (base heal), block attacks while healing once.
Signet of Resolve: Passive removes a condition every 10 seconds, Active (on-click) Heals you.
Healing Breeze: Cone breath that heals you and any ally in the cone. I used this one

    My Utility skills:
Signet of Judgment: Passive, reduces incoming damage, Active, gives buff that reflects incoming damage back at source
Merciful Intervention: Teleport to closest ally with the lowest health and drop a Symbol of Faith-like healing area.
    and alternating:
Smite Condition: Removes a condition and damages foes, double damage if a condition is actually removed.
Hallowed Ground: Prevents knockbacks, stuns, or launches for allies in targeted area.

    Elite:
Sanctuary: Big ass bubble that pushes enemies out.

Felt like a Paladin to me, but that's a personal choice based on the weapons/skills/Traits I had to work with.

Wait, the Shatterer isn't an Elder Dragon???? What is he?

Also, didn't WoW just recently get a fight on the back of a dragon?

He isn't. From an interview I had with Randall Price of Arenanet:
RP: We always had a raging debate that occurred within our community, and within the gaming community at large, about whether or not Guild Wars was an MMO. We always called it an 'online roleplaying game' because it's not a fully-persistent world. Everywhere you adventure is persistent. We had persistent cities and social gathering places, and then instanced adventuring, missions and quests. That worked really well. It worked really well in that we did a really good job in telling a story in Guild Wars. The story of the world, the story of all these epic adventures you go on. Instances enable you to do that really well.

So in Guild Wars 2, no ifs-ands-or-buts about it, we're a full triple-A persistent MMORPG. We have that open-world experience that we just talked about with dynamic events, but we want to make sure that we're bringing the RPG into MMORPGs. And the way we're doing that is we strategically use instances in connection with the way we tell your character's story. Your story of a hero, who takes part in an adventure. Bringing the five playable races in the game together to combat the elder dragons that have awoken in the land. These elder dragons that are elemental forces, like hurricanes, that have changed the face of the continents and branded and scoured the land.

IG: Like the Shatterer shown in the demo.

RP: Well the Shatterer's not an elder dragon –

    IG: What?

RP: What you're seeing is actually the equivalent of a cat to lion. The Shatterer, I love it. Anybody out there who's seen our demo, they know what the Shatterer is. An awesome, massive, huge dragon, but he's a dragon minion. A minion of these elder dragons. And you will go up against an elder dragon in Guild Wars 2.

He's a 'champion' for one of the elder dragons: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Shatterer

Not sure how they'll work in a fight against an actual Elder Dragon without some sort of god weapon coming into play (we did beat Abbadon, but he was still chained and weak and had the support of the other 5 Gods). Since that interview says we *will* fight one then I'm hoping they don't do anything cheap to set up a lore beatable fight.

Edit: I mean shit, how much crap did we have to go through to kill Shiro, and he was just an upjumped elite mortal dude, so they'll need some big handicap to let us beat an Elder Dragon (hopefully don't just beat an 'aspect'). The wiki for the Whisperers says they don't believe the Elder Dragons can actually be killed, only contained, so the Elder Dragon fight may not involve directly fighting the Dragon, but rather some operation to trap it.

If I recall the way that Destiny's Edge almost defeated Kralkatorrik was through Asuran technology that allowed Snaff to control it and keep the dragon from moving. Of course that didn't go over so well...
