Also, didn't WoW just recently get a fight on the back of a dragon?
It did and it was very lacklustre. It was basically a corridor where you killed trash mobs. Not very good at all!
Haven't played WoW since vanilla so I had to look up that video... I'm impressed that Blizz managed to make a battle on the back of a flying dragon look less exciting than some MC bosses.

Why..why would there be trashmobs on the back of a dragon????
Then I recall the steaming shoggoth dropping of incestuous semen, tears and sullen, seething hatred that masqueraded as a raiding guild and I cry out in horror before I am silenced by the weight of the memory.
Honestly, I hope theres some throw backs to the old EQ style of raiding where you needed to get together a hundred people to beat on the thing.
I mean, in all the concept art, videos and teasers, these things are fucking massive. Let's not dumb down that aspect by finding some way for LOL10MAN to take one of these things down.
Make in another instance like the WvWvW where it's an ongoing battle, something that could literally take hours for a team of 100+ people to do. That's a fucking dragon encounter...none of this deus ex machina bullshit.
I don't want us to send Zhaitan to dragon hell, only to have him sit there mumbling, "My plan would've been perfect, had it not been for those meddling kids!".
Who is the dragon at the very end of that video I just posted by the way?
Well, if it's an Elder Dragon, it's unlikely to be Primordius (still underground) or Kralkatorrik (in the Crystal Desert). Could be Jormag if it's a northern sea. Probably not Bubbles, because I doubt they've modeled Bubbles yet. Most likely it's Zhaitan... or maybe it's just one of his champions!
Want to find me on a gaming service? I'm SwashbucklerXX everywhere.
A bigass dragon under water like in that video would probably allow them to actually have it move around a lot unlike the Shatterer. Must be easier to accomodate something that big in water as there's very little in the way of obstructions

Anyone else getting a bit tired of the "GW2 is going to be like this because WoW" stuff?
Last month is was, "Meh, everyone's going to FORCE the trinity to work because herp WoW".
Now it's, "Everyone's going to play Hunters and Paladins, I mean, Rangers and Guardians because herp WoW."
Yeah, I'm just a grouchy old man, but dammit kids, get off my lawn with your WoW.
If you are going to stay in the genre, get used to it. Every game is a WoW-Clone (according to some). Some actually are (looking at you, RIFT), some aren't. I'd say if someone calls it a WoW clone (or tries to imply something has to be done X-way because WoW did it), either ignore them... or ignore them.
Well, RIFT and SWTOR basically straight up said they were 'WoW with _____' (Rifts and VA/Story respectively), so completely fair in those cases
Just like all isometric action RPGS are Diablo clones, every FPS is a Doom clone, etc, just the nature of things. WoW may not have been the first (or second, or third...), it was the biggest and for better or worse it's now what 'MMORPG' gets associated with.
Divinity's Reach video is need, makes me think of taking the main city in Cantha in GW1 and merging it all down into one much-nicer looking place. (On that note - I hope an expansion brings Cantha back just so we can see Kaineng updated/250 years later)
Diablo and Doom were hardly the first in their respective genres either
Doesn't that make the point all the more relevant?
Also I wasn't at all interested in this until I saw the WvW stuff. I love me some pvp, and Rift (as much as I like it) pretty much has pvp as less than an afterthought.
Yeah I don't think they've shown any elder dragons and they might not even have them ready for launch. They probably have a place for them planned but they strike me more as "will appear later in the life cycle of GW2" type event.
Though I could have sworn a dev said we'd be fighting them in a dungeon or something

I think the swimming one in the video is the one found in Drakkar lake, one of Jormag's champions

Here's a good example of how tall an Elder Dragon would be:
or even:
Those buildings are roughly 1,000 feet tall, which is the approximate height of Kralkatorrik. Now, take something that is that tall and give it proportionate length and there you go. A wingspan that would literally block out the sun, easily.

I don't see how we could fight something that big. Either we would be shooting fireballs at its toe nails or hitting its massive scales with puny swords.
We'll probably be fighting minions while the super weapon is charged and fired.
Pretty much. I think ArenaNet did a really good job of picking a size for these bastards that is still within our ability to comprehend. "Hey, you wanna know how big these guys are? Go find the largest building in your city, stand at the entrance, and look up. A bit bigger than that."
I also like how they're so big that they could pretty much eat Deathwing in one bite.
Yeah, keeping it busy while the superweapon charges was the way that undead dragony thing got killed that they showed at some event or other last year.
These elder dragons that are elemental forces, like hurricanes, that have changed the face of the continents and branded and scoured the land.
I love that the Guild Wars setting has made dragons interesting again. They aren't just "epic", which in gaming usually translates to "huge hitbox and lots of AOE", they're mythic.

Tequatl the Sunless, Herald of Bubbles the sea dragon. Or Zhaitan, I forget which. He gets shot up by an Asuran superlaser. But you need to charge it and do various other things, mainly killing undead, to get it to work.

Well it does cheat slightly by having a huge range of Dragons - in GW1 you have Glint and that other one, and the bonus for Glint's mission is actually to kill her (though I don't suppose she actually dies) and there's a challenge later to protect a dragon baby. I sorta get the impression that Dragons in GW are a bit like Lobsters - they continue to grow both in size and power forever or at least up until some absurd upper limit until they are killed by an outside force.

Honestly, it's not going to be difficult... there are a few ways.
1. Fight it from the inside. A perennial favorite of games when you're fighting something massive.
2. Shadow of the Colossus-style, where we attack, like, its eye or something.
3. SUPERWEAPON style, with a giant sun laser designed by asura, or a nuke.
4. Crashing giant zeppelins into it.
5. A united and concerted effort by the five major races that combines in an assault on the Dragon. Honestly, I think this one is the most likely: The sylvari use plants to work into the Dragon's scales and create chinks in its armor, the humans get their gods to intercede to assault it, the asura hit it with magitech sun lasers, the norn have a mountain fall on the damn thing, and then finally... the charr fucking fuel-air bomb the fucker.

Actually, it has been said that the laser is not always there. You actually have to follow a line of events to construct the laser but the fight against the dragon can happen without it and is then different/harder.

I think that's just a fish.
For reference's sake, in the books Edge of Destiny pissed off Jormag's champion and it retaliated with a twenty-foot blizzard.
