Help Me Spend $50

Hey guys, I figured things were not so busy in this forum that this couldn't have its own thread (others may want guidance on their own $50 some day!) but feel free to tear me asunder with your harsh condemnations if you feel otherwise.

I recently received a $50 gift card to my LCS. There's not a whole lot that I'm really pining for, but I'd also like to use it to get a nice hardcover or a couple of trades rather than just saving it for my weekly purchases or whatever.

Are there any collections you've picked up recently that you'd be particularly inclined toward recommending? There are a couple of things I'm weighing that you can comment on, or feel free to suggest something else entirely:

- Dark Avengers hardcover: Is this worth it? I recently finished Supergods and Grant Morrison made it sound pretty compelling. I read both Secret Invasion and Siege but never went through this series. Bendis can be hit or miss for me, but I love Deodato and wouldn't mind Osborn Thunderbolts 2.0

- MetaMaus: Enough said, I guess.

- Jack Kirby's The Demon Omnibus: Never read this. Worth it?

- Kamandi Omnibus: Same as The Demon. I'm more familiar with this character, though.

- Bizarro Comics hardcovers: I've also never read these!

- Flash collections? I've recently started to love the Flash after reading some of the Waid stuff and the New 52 ongoing, but I'm not really sure what the right call is here.

if you haven't read Morrison/Millar's two Flash trades, do so. The first of their trades is Emergency Stop, the second is The Human Race.

Have you read The Immortal Iron Fist?

If not, get the first three volumes of the Immortal Iron Fist

    Second.

At the very least get the first two. The third volume is a collection of stories about past Iron Fists and isn't absolutely essential (though still nice).

    Thirded

Of the stuff you mention I've only read Dark Avengers, which was alright I guess
Is there any other super hero stuff you're interested in?

I'm reading Hickman's Fantastic Four right now, and it is awesome

Dark Avengers was a solid book for a little while, but like pretty much every other Marvel title it got sucked up into the company's continuing line of "continuity is king" events and went out the window.

    That uh

doesn't really apply to Dark Avengers since its whole existence was built on the current continuity of the universe

I mean it was the flagship Dark Reign title

The first volume of Dark Avengers and X-Men crossover Utopia are the best "Dark Avenger" stories. The 2nd trade is pretty alright too, but don't bother with siege/3rd trade.

I have, in fact. But yes, it's excellent stuff.

I mean, there's tons of super hero stuff I'm interested in, which I guess is why this is trickier since my collection's already pretty solid. Hickman's Fantastic Four is one of my favorite ongoings right now and I have all the trades, along with FF.

Although: it's gotten me a bit interested in Marvel cosmic stuff, which I've not really sampled beyond Infinity Gauntlet and Annihilation. Older stuff / hardcover recommendations are welcome, or newer things if you think they'd apply.

I've been curious about Planet Hulk. Typically I'm not a fan of the character, but I have been loving Jason Aaron's Incredible Hulk and have always heard this is good.

Have you read Brubaker's Captain America? I've heard great things about it, which I then confirmed first-hand when I picked up the first omnibus at a Thwipster sale. It's a bit more than your $50 (MSRP is $75), but I was completely unable to tear myself away until I finished it. It's got to be one of the most tightly-plotted stories I've ever read. It may not be one of my favorites, but it's probably one of the best-written stories I've ever read. (I was somewhat disappointed by Vol. 2, but thems the breaks.)

Have you read Daytripper? How about Umbrella Academy? Casanova? I heartily, heartily recommend all of those. Daytripper is required reading, everything else you can pick up at your convenience.

Planet Hulk is what to read if you aren't a huge fan ( and readable if you are as well) It was an amazing story, and in a way "rebooted" the interest in Hulk from all sides, without actually rebooting Hulk himself. It is such a good story.

World War Hulk, the follow-up, was decent, but very few stories ( let alone Hulk stories) have compared to Planet Hulk imo.

Yeah, I love Brubaker's Cap (although, like you, I'm partial to what's contained in the first omnibus, which is one of my favorite volumes in my collection).

I've actually been thinking about picking up
Casanova, but I'm leaning toward Planet Hulk now, I must say.

So! I made my purchase. Picked up the Planet Hulk trade and, somewhat unexpectedly, the first volume of Sweet Tooth. Thanks for the advice, erryone.
