I'd thought about that to get Pokemon in the ocean actually. But assuming you can get data and GPS to work in airplane mode the Pokemon would just blip right by.
Nintendo presents: PokeCruise! Take your kids on a cruise with lots of pokemon shit to do on the boat, including pokemon to catch in Pokemon Go!
I've wasted a lot of break time today walking five minutes up the road only to have the server crap itself.
thats what you get for walking
Today I caught a magikarp. I've pretty much beaten the game.
Yeah all that flopping around was pretty difficult.
Once you have the Pokémon in throw-the-ball-mode you can pretty much take your sweet time to catch it, it doesn't matter if you keep walking.
Pokemon will actually try to escape and run away. It's not a guarantee. This may have something to do with a trainer level/Pokemon CP disparity? But I've seen a fairly high CP Jynx run from me and I'm only level 9.
Someone posted this exact pic in one of my Facebook gamer groups I mod, and someone else reported it. I mean, I suppose it's a little bit in bad taste, but the image itself isn't anything controversial without the Squirtle in it either. Just unfortunate.
My son loves this game. He doesn't like geocaching much anymore, but for some reason he will walk a mile to hit 3 pokestops. We have caught all kinds of stuff, but the gyms haven't exactly been working out for us. They are always protected by 300CP or better creatures and we are stuck in the mid 100s. When we join a gym of our color (red), we can add a creature. It then gets its butt kicked and we get no XP or anything out of it. So it seems like the people who have to most leveling will always destroy you. Maybe we will skip the gyms and just catch the creatures.
Personally I like that you can give duplicate Pokémon to the professor who purees them for you into candy. Cannibalism allows for evolution. Soylent Gray is made out of rattatas.
Magikarps take 400 candy to evolve into a Gyarados. So always hold the strongest Magikarp you see in your reserve, and transfer the rest back to the professor for your 4 candies (3 for capture, 1 for transfer)
Is there any benefit to being on opposite (or the same) team? I haven't really played much but my wife has. Once I hit level 5 is there a point to intentionally being on a different team or should I just go with whatever she picked?
There's a bit more benefit to being on the same team, since you'd ideally be walking/catching them together, you can take out rival gyms faster working in tandem. When you level up a gym, you can place a Pokemon in it (one per gym, max up to 10). It's a bit of a catch 22, though - you want to put in easy pokemon for your other team members to be able to level the gym off of, but you want to fortify your gym from stronger rivals so you need to have strong pokemon at the top.
I don't know what a gym's maximum level is, maybe 5? I haven't seen a gym last long enough to level beyond that in my area. It takes more and more prestige to level a gym, and you earn 100 or so prestige for every pokemon you train (beat) that's in your team's control.
When a gym is under your team's control, you can only use one pokemon from your team to take on the defenders and you do it ironman style - no items, no switching.
When you go up against a rival gym, you get your standard 6 pokemon that you can set up to counter the defender types, but you still can't use items, only swap in fresh pokemon.
The more gyms you have Pokemon placed in (up to 10), you get to do a resource collect every 21 hours. For each gym, you get 500 stardust and 10 Pokecoins.

Same. I'm lucky to place two pokemon down because two gyms are very close to each other, but once I do that, I immediately hit the resource collect because I know they'll be booted before the day is over.

I haven't seen a gym last 3 hours, let alone 21.
I live in Arizona. So most gyms have Fire pokemon in control of them.
Until Saturday when someone plopped their high CP Vaporeon on top of the local gym. It lasted for two full days with like double digit wins.
There is a gym at the front office of my complex. Me and this other guy I actually met at the mall have been going back and forth with a couple of the ladies who work in the office. The are Valor and we're Mystic. It's kind of amusing. Also I can target it while in bed so that's a plus.
I'm enjoying the stories about people using PokemonGo as the new Tinder. I mean, hey, at least there's *one* thing you have in common. I just want to hear the stories about actual hookups happening thanks to Pokémon.
Also, has anyone managed to play the game in an airport? Is it chaotic or is there nothing? I don't have the game, but I'm curious because I'm in airports a lot.

I have no idea if works in airports and I probably won't be able to test it for a couple months but that could actually be a pretty fun way to spend your hours while you sit and wait.
If you love all things Final Fantasy (and we know you dooo), then you might have heard about another Japan-only Final Fantasy mobile action game called Final Fantasy Mobius. Well, it's now gearing up for it's global launch, and there's naturally a pre-registration campaign to get people signed up and ready to participate.
Ingress apparently wasn't popular in my neighborhood specifically, so there isn't a whole lot here yet.
This is my problem as well - I just moved to an area that has a cluster of new apartments and shops, and because nobody lived there in the years leading up to Go, my home area is barren. That being said, it's a short walk to the train station (a gym) and a few pokestops... and downtown is probably littered with stuff. I plan to head down there this weekend.
Also, I work in the center of another town - so there are plenty of clustered pokestops and gyms for me to hit up at lunchtime. Seems to be a lot of gyms-changing-hands activity here, too, which is cool. And the pokes at the gyms are like 400-700 CP, so I don't feel like I'm way behind or facing insurmountable odds.

So, 12 hour train ride. You only have access to games that don't require an active connection or GPS. What do you play?
I can't stand micro transactions or click farms. I'm willing to pay actual money up front for a couple complete games. Purchased FFVI because it's long and nostalgia. What else?

Xcom and the banner saga served me well on my commutes though xcom is a serous battery hog and will make your phone awfully hot.

There's also Shadowrun Returns and the Baldur's Gate EE games. I'm pretty sure none of them require a connection.

Shadowrun doesn't but if you are using a phone, the small interface is not ideal. I played on a nexus 6 and it got very annoying trying to move my guys in battles to the right spots. It also has annoying load times. That being said, I played both sr:returns and dragonfall on my phone beginning to end so it can't be that bad.
Battery hogging is fine. Amtrak has outlets. Are there any action games folks would recommend to break up the strategy? Rayman like games?

There's always Crossy Road.
If you want something a little different, one of my favorite mobile games still is 99 Bricks: Wizard Tower. Picture Tetris, but with physics. You have to stack the blocks as high as possible without falling in order to build your wizard tower.
The Sorcery! series is also really good. Choose your own adventure games with a healthy amount of RPG thrown in.
Speaking of RPGs, KotOR had a mobile release. I don't think it requires a connection, but you might want to check on that.

Is KOTOR still free through Amazon? Because that is probably a good option. And a plus is that the save for the mobile version is the same as for the PC so you can copy it over and continue on PC if you want
EDIT: I also played through Ep1 of Tales from the Borderlands on my phone and that worked great.
If you have a tablet, I'd recommend the Adventure of Mana game, which is remake of Final Fantasy Legend on the original Gameboy, which spawned the hit SNES game Secret of Mana. You could play it on a phone, but I find the game really needs a larger screen to get the most enjoyment from it.

You have to catch 101 magikarp to get a gyrados. Makes sense and yeesh.

Is that taking into account the 3 magikarp candy you get every time you catch one?

So I'd pretty much need to wait for other people to take it over or happen to be by and join in a battle to take them down.
