MGS3Online To Die On 4/2/07

February 27, 2007 - Konami has announced through its Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence support site that it will be shutting down the online game in North America on April 2, 2007. Launched just under a year ago, Subsistence is the second highest-rated PlayStation 2 game on IGN. But apparently there isn't enough online activity for Konami to justify keeping the servers running.
"Konami sincerely thanks all of the Subsistence online community for their dedication to the game and support of the Metal Gear Solid series," a message reads on the support site. Konami also reminds users that Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is currently available for the PSP with online gameplay.
If you haven't checked out Subsistence's online game, you still have a month to do so. No word, yet, on what is to come of servers in the UK.
i've had MGS 3 and PO for a while now, and I still haven't bothered to go online. Something about MP and MGS just don't mix in my book, though, to be honest, I've never really had fun with online MP anyways. I need to play with my buddies there or I lose interest.
Damn! I've been craving to play a few more rounds of this game online ever since I wasn't able to when my PS2 died in a flood. I still haven't even bothered to get it replaced, and now I realize there is only about a month of life left in this game online. How depressing...whyyyyyyyyy?!?!
wait...so then I'm the only one who thought this game was broken? All my love for MGS could not squeeze some more play out of this, something about the controls just screwed me over.
I'm thinking Sony and Nintendo need to make it a requirement that if the company involved is going to shut down servers for online play that they need to release the code so third party hosts can be set up. That's two online games for the PS2 dead in a month - I don't like this trend.

Yea, dear lord I loved this game but the servers and room controls and friend finding was just horrible compared to Xbox Live I had gotten so used to. I bought the hookups just to play it, bought the game day one, made it up to decent rank a few times, usually dominated when I had a team of you guys with me. It sucks that they're killing it so soon. I believe it came out just last March or so, but then I haven't touched it in probably 8 months so its MY FAULT! ITS ALL MY FAULT- BLAME ME GUYS.
I'm sure they just want to build hype up for MGS4 and stop handing out freebies with, you know, the highly touted selling point of the damn game- online multiplayer.
Maybe we should try and get a game going this weekend, a sendoff party.
I played MGSO for a little while, and usually got my ass handed to me. It was fun as hell, though.
I read about this on OC a while ago. It sucks.
MGSO doesn't have a LAN mode, so once it's gone, it's gone. The only reason that DC PSO is up and running is because players were logging packets long before it shut down so they would have a better idea of how the game and the server communicated, and there is a PC version of PSO that had a majority of the code they needed.
So basically, yeah, whenever a company plans on terminating server functions, it would be awesome if they would release the server software so that the hardcore playerbase who still plays on a regular basis can still play, and the company is off the hook in terms of costs. The problem is, a lot of PS2 games use similar if not the same online code from other games made by the same company between them, so if the code for one is released, that opens up a lot of issues with security of the other games still online.
At least Subsistence had all of the downloadable camo on-disc.

That was weird because you had to put the camo on your mem card to work.
The camo is on-disc, but you have to transfer it to your memory card first. So, even though the game will be going off-line (and I'm assuming the camo downloader for the original MGS3 will be going offline as well), you can still get all of the camo files.
I never played the game but did anyone see it as a real online Metal Gear anyway? I mean, I've seen a lot of footage of it and while it had a couple of MG-ish elements (magazines and cardboard box in particular), it really didn't feel like what I would expect from an online Metal Gear game.
I really kind of hope Kojima Productions goes back to the drawing board with the PS3 version of MGO.
It was very possible to hide around corners or under things and ambush people. Due to the resolution, it was difficult to distinguish people in deep grass, and I think that was intentional. And there's the Sneaking Mode, where it's entirely possible to use sneaking techniques learned in the singleplayer.
I remember hiding in plain view as the entire enemy team ran straight past me, simply because I chose the right color to hide against. So yeah, it was very much an Online Metal Gear.

Except for when you actually got the film or whatever and it hovered blatantly over your head.

They must need some money for the law suit over that subliminal slot machine thing.

noooo
The game sessions are still held by the players. Konami just handled stats, rankings, and listing the available games.
So is it possible just to LAN the thing with a bunch of PS2s?
I have no idea.
If it has a LAN mode. People will just do what they did with PSO for the DC, create a server emulator.
I remember all the crazy games we had. Myself, Shim, Renzo, Sanjuro, and the crew.

I do wish it lasted more, though. I'm sad.

What a retarded design choice.
