    it's called an opinion.
And...? Your justification for your opinion doesn't make any sense. I wasn't questioning your opinion. I was questioning how your 'justification' at all leads to such an opinion.

But now i dont even care. Screw you all!

    That was a satisfying hyuck.

I suggest we revert to whichever constructive discussion we were participating in prior to GrimDog/Bwang.

Well, the game would require an immense amount of customization to portray the entirety of the classes. Which 'core' classes should be incorporated, and why?

    Right.

    No, your mother.

The thing about "classes" is it also depends on what races there are- but I'd say it's a certainty that the Imperial Guard are represented. If it's a hive world, maybe the odd bounty hunting scum bag. Which raises the question: IG scouts? IG snipers? IG engineers? Or would all those splinters (whether Guardsmen appear or not) just be statistical variations? I doubt a scout would be far from a sniper...

And I'm still kinda holding out for an MMORTS...

What the hell are you talking about? The inquisition has jurisdiction over everything, whether they like it or not. The risk of a chapter being declared Excommunicate Traitoris is a big fucking thing.
Though not every Chapter gives a fuck. The Space Wolves have been this close to being declared Heretics for how long now and they still tell Terra to fuck off when it suits them.

Course they have the Fang, which is about as hard to assault as Terra herself.

Regardless of the type of game (other than a FPS) I think the Inquisitor retinue type characters are going to be more likely than army list options - guardsmen just being represented by a veteran rather than an array of different types.

I don't think classes would suit a game like this - maybe something like the SPECIAL system from fallout?

After reading most of the thread, I'm surprised that nobody mentioned the answer that immediately came to mind when I thought of a 40k MMO trying to balance the races: don't let them be playable.

Make everyone who starts either be a Space Marine or Chaos Space Marine. Lock out all other races as filthy xenos. Let what would be your traditional "race" be instead chapter: Space Wolves, Ultramarines, Blood Angels, etc. Even within a single company, there is enough diversity in roles that you could have a diverse section of classes. You play on just a handful of planets in a warp storm that's locked out from the rest of the Imperium, and with each expansion they could have the warp storm recede and unlock a few more.

I don't believe this is the best possible route, necessarily. But I think this is something that could be done well enough and still stay true to fluff. There'd be orks all around the countryside, legions of imperial guard or corrupted imperial guard as fodder, (dark)eldar pirates, maybe a necron tomb raid instance, and fuck the tau. Nobody has to worry about a relative imbalance in power between the races, they don't have to code in 8 different newbie zones and paths to level up, everyone gets to play as the Space Marines. I think it's the safest way for Vigil to go when making the game, as it takes the least risks and has the broadest appeal.

And MMOs don't try to build for greatness, they build for taking the least risks and having the broadest appeal.

Fans would literally RIP THEM APART if only space marines and chaos space marines were playable. Me included.

By the way, I've heard my friends talk about this as if it was already decided that it would be more like an MMORTS. I can't link any sources of this information, but they seemed pretty certain.

I think if they limited the races to marines there'd be a bit of an uproar, but I'd bet that those people still end up buying the game. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it came out all-marine.

Afterall, got to save something for the expansions, right?

Jesus, they can make this like eve, with ground missions. Hot damn, imagine if you are on mission and your ship gets blown up....and you are stranded. EvE, WoW, DAoC all in one bundle....
Or something like KOTOR 40K: Online, if PvP wasn't one of the main features for some reason. Space combat in 40K is more Pirates of the Carribean than Star Wars, certainly makes it simpler to do but perhaps less appealing as a feature.

Is that with or without a Jar of Dirt? :P
