I'm excited and worried at the same time. The thought of being Emperor's Children and hailing Slannesh, but than it's Slannesh and I have no idea if they'll ever represent the tentacle boobed goodness that is the daemons of slannesh.
It's been peppered in great volumes throughout the thread, but: This is either going to suck REALLY hard, or rock REALLY hard.
I don't think that the technology required to put out a great quality Warhammer40k game is available.. you need MMOFPS for this, and it just doesn't seem realistic at this point. Which, of course, makes me really fucking sad.
Some people are being really silly. They're not going to make the game exactly like the fluff or anything, they can't.
Then why the fuck bother? The fluff's the only reason to get excited at this point.
Though you know what I think they could do reasonably well and would make me cream my pants immediately? A Gorkamorka MMO. Though I imagine we'd get tired of deserts eventually...
You're right. DoW is Relic shitting all over GW's work because it's not exactly the same and not every weapon, class, race, etc is in the game. I don't know why they even made it.
But seriously, that doesn't even make sense. Fluff is the backstory that makes 40k interesting. Without that you've got a series of poor tabletop games.
Fluff is fluff in that it doesn't matter at all really.
That's why it's fluff.
Yeah, see that doesn't really fly when it comes to WH40K. The fluff is a big part of the whole package, considering how many people know about the WH40K fluff despite they've never played a single game or painted a figurine their whole life.
I can only see this working as something like planetside, trying to do do a worldof40kquest would be fucking awful. It has to be nonstop shooting and killing in a pvp environment, possibly with some cannon fodder npcs to bulk up the scale of the fights.
Yeah yeah I know backstory but it shouldn't affect gameplay for balance reasons.
Maybe, but you have to admit that even the old excuse gameplay>backstory can be taken way too far. I sure as hell don't want to see a player running around as a Daemonprince spamming LFG requests. This is the main reason that I hope for a Planetside-esque game.
You're right. DoW is Relic shitting all over GW's work because it's not exactly the same and not every weapon, class, race, etc is in the game. I don't know why they even made it.
Where did I saw DoW wasn't a faithful recreation? In fact, I feel it is.
In fact, I don't really know how to respond to your argument. A skirmish-level RTS can recreate the organized military aspects of 40K phenomenally well. An MMO wouldn't. That's why I don't think we'd be participating in the organized military aspects of 40K in an MMO.

Relics' work was perfectly fine because it represented the parts of the 40k cannon it had really damned faithfully for the most part.
Maybe classes will unlock after reaching a certain level with another class.
Like say reach a certain level or whatever as an IG soldier. That unlocks Space marine class which effectively already starts out being able to kick the shit out of beginner classes.
Something like that?

That's actually not a bad idea. Get a regular guy to level 20, your other character slots may then create another super-guy who's level 1, but equivalent to a level 20.
Still doesn't change the fact that space marines are going to be about as prolific as Blood Elves on the first day of Burning Crusade.
But I like the idea in a general, non-40k related sense.
Y'know, I think that there's an alternative that has merit here.
I think the WoW / Everquest model of MMO of "grind for l00ts with 2 million others" is most definitely the way to not go.
I think that there could be DAMN good fun if it were a Diablo-style game, with 8-16 folks in massive, massive PvE.
You'd be able to have your Space Marines and Exarchs and Battlesuits since you'd be up against SWARMS AFTER SWARMS of Tyranids, Orks, or Guardsmen, cutting them down by the hundreds with Bolter fire and Power Sword-dom, and cackling as their flashlights bounce off of your Master-Crafted pauldrons.
Then you're totally cool to build up enough mojo to be able to earn a Power Fist and punch holes through tanks.
Pure, mindless slaughter with your buddies in instanced randomized environments for the Emperor? I'm sold!

High tiered classes like SM can be hardcore in that if they die they are erased. They start out already pretty powerful so the loss wouldn't be too great but shitty players wouldn't be all over the place.
Still doesn't change the fact that space marines are going to be about as prolific as Blood Elves on the first day of Burning Crusade.
Hopefully they'll make each raced balanced enough and with different playstyles to counter this. For example, giving orks more numbers through groups of npcs that fight with the players and grow in number as the Waaaaagghhh!!!! builds up. Eldar would obviously lack the constitution and numbers, but perhaps have the ability to setup webgates for teleportation and use fast attack craft for hit and run strikes.
Space marines are going to sell the game though, there is no way that they are going to restrict them regardless of the type of game they come up with. It's just throwing away the money you spent to get the 40K license.
I'm the only one who sees this thread and thinks: Operation Flashpoint
Think about it. Instanced battle, players controlling squads of NPC's. (Edit: As in the player is on the field Operation Flashpoint style and has a squad of fodder with him. To make it more like the tabletop game you could set it so that enemy NPCs allways kills your NPCs first untill only you remain).
One (high level) player forms an army with his force commander ability. The higher the level the higher the point cost of the army can be.
At the same time he probably has skills that gives him some points he can spend himself, those are used to buy his HQ/retinue.
As other players join in they contribute points that can be used for things. A single player could join in and purchase a squad of guardsmen for his points that he would then personally command in the battle, or two players of lower level could purchase that squad together.
Space marines costs a lot of points and can never be NPC's. If you want to field an army of space marines you need a whole lot of dedicated players who know how to play together.
Once the army is final you then choose a territory to either attack or defend.
Skills you could level up could be:
* Commander skill (let's you create armies or combat patrols with increasing points)
* Increased points value to buy your own units from.
* Skills that let you buy different kind of units to command (stormtroopers, leman russ, entire platoons etc)
* Skills that directly effect your own character (psychic powers, commisar abilities, additional stats of different kinds)
You'd get the feeling of cannon fodder and epic battles while each player would be a very real part of the battle himself as it plays out.
Some people would spend their points to be able to pilot a leman russ in combat, some people would spend it to be a space marine, some would want to be commissars etc.
The game would balance itself out because an army only wants/can only have 1 commisar and you could make psykers on the same side use the same powersource etc for their powers.
Add small group raids against either other teams (like Guildwars) or against NPC's (WoW) with players banding together to form killteams or inquisition retinues or whatever and some kind of central city where anyone could go and there was just total war and you'd have one hell of a solid game.
Some people are being really silly. They're not going to make the game exactly like the fluff or anything, they can't.
Then why the fuck bother? The fluff's the only reason to get excited at this point.

I tried coming up with a way to do this earlier in the thread, but everyone was too busy fanwanking and being generally retarded to discuss it.
One of the nice things about Marines is that every chapter has its own rules about how and when initiates are chosen to undergo the trials to have their geneseed implanted. Many chapters adhere strictly to the Codex Astartes, but many do not. If you allow the game to take place on a Chapter world, then it wouldn't be unreasonable for distinguished members of the IG to be offered the chance to undergo these trials once they are experienced enough. The game just needs to have prestige classes.
Zimmydoom, Zimmydoom
Flew away in a balloon
Had sex with polar bears
While sitting in a reclining chair
Now there are Zim-Bear hybrids
Running around and clawing eyelids
Watch out, a Zim-Bear is about to have sex with yooooooou!
You can't just let people grind to level 60 and get their space marine class because then everyone (that matterd) would be space marines and you'd lose the feel of the game.
Making people start out as IG for a bit (to compare it to WoW) say level 10 would be fine but sooner or later you have to give people a choice. Make them able to become a space marine but make it clear that they loose a lot of other nifty things (Squad NPC members as fodder and a skill tree that looks different and takes longer time to progress in) and start them out as a scout.
People forming their own chapters and inviting players would be crucial to the game. Watching two elite clans battling it out with 2500 point armies would be really intresting to watch.
Watching a hundred level 60 marines/CSM battle it out in some battleground with their bolters +53 ice damage would totally suck.
Since the Imperial Guard and the Space Marines would most likely be working together as a single Imperium faction, it would be nice to them as two sides that complement each other. Space marines predominantly using elite infantry, with the Guard having a more mechanized approach with artillery, tanks, fighter/bomber aircraft, and did somebody say TITANS!!
Y'know, maybe not the fucking huge ones, just the kinda big ones.

Doesn't matter what the chapter believes, the reason IG comandos don't get the marine treatment is because they are almost always too old - its nothing to do with keeping the various arms of the military seperate.
There are plenty of ways of balancing marines that don't require big changes to the background or restricting them. Chaos space marines vs marines zones are one option and having PCs being the elite units of each race works as well.

Context, motherfucker.
DoW was perfectly in-line with the fluff. Space Marines were still dead 'ard and few in number. Orcs were terrible shots, but they were tough and there are a fucking lot of them. And everyone still hated the fuck out of eachother. The only part I can think of with any big divergence is when someone pointed out that a sorceror inexplicably turned into a bloodthirster.
Meanwhile, us grownups are talking about how Space Marines are going to have to be an equal 1v1 fight for a same-level gretchin in the name of Balance.
How all of the intrigue and tension between all of the different factions are going to be watered down to a "Good vs. Evil" war. How the idea that we're going to see Inquisitors teaming up with Eldar Warlocks and Tau Fire Warriors for a raid on Ghazghkul Mag Uruk Thraka's lair doesn't seem like all that far-fetched a scenario.
I really really want to see how they're planning on doing this.
I mentioned in the 40k thread that it could be cool to have this set in the Horus Heresy, bam, you've got your two factions and you're looking at a slice of the 40k galaxy rather than trying to include the whole of the modern galaxy. I think it's important to realise that we're probably going to be very limited in what we have access to, as there's just too much out there. I wouldn't be surprised if the race options were "Imperial Marine" and "Chaos Marine" to start with, with the likes of Orks, Tau and Eldar acting as your monsters.
Of course it would be awesome to be able to play as a Fire Dragon or Crisis Battlesuit but I think it's important to hold low expectations for this and take anything as a bonus.

- RTT (Real-time tactics) like game. You start with a set amount of units before battle. Say like in the Myth series or Warhammer: Dark Omen. And maybe allow reinforcements later in battle.
- Some sort of way to balance the races so that Space Marines don't conquer everything because everyone picks them.
- Missions.
- Massive battles with lots of players fighting each other at once.
- Etc.
ITT we learn why G&Ters shouldn't be game designers or really, anything that involves adapting an existing product into a new medium.
I'm more worried about it going to an unknown developer than whether or not the game accurately represent the shade of green on an Ork's ass.
Its more or less NCSoft isn't it? These game studios confuse me a bit as they quite often seem to be the same people founding new studios for a new game (I presumed its a financial thing vs brand, with the former tending to be more important since the people who really care about brands will often recognise the names or read newsposts by people who do)

Well I'm not thrilled about this in any sense of the word. In tabletop I despise marine newbies and take every chance I get to blow em off the table with my Imperial Guard. If this is gonna be space marine only I'm sure lots of fans are gonna be upset considering there are what... 7 more sides they're leaving out. Not everyone is a space marine fanboy. I'm also not happy with the suggestion that Imperial Guard should only be a low level transition into being a space marine.
Some people are being really silly. They're not going to make the game exactly like the fluff or anything, they can't.

Well at least you aren't being a condescending prick for no reason. I was saying the game doesn't have to, nor should, be 5 marines taking on 50 guardsmen because it wasn't like that in DoW. You, for some reason, took that as me saying "TERMINATARS SHOULD LOZE 2 CULTISTZ" for some goddamn reason. I don't even know how you got that from what I said, to be honest, moreso since you are going on about context.
