Is Twilight Odin a 1 time only, or can I reset the gate and re-get him?
One time affair.

So last night was pretty productive.
Caught Omega, got him to 30 (which is when he becomes grade 5)
Grabbed the Silver Chocobo, leveled him to 45 and got nearly all the racing skills I need.
Used the Silver Chocobo to get two Collector Catalogues.
Order of the day today will be farming Power Generators, and using the gil I get while doing so to raise the other various infusion ingredients necessary.
Also, I was afraid I fucked up my Silver Chocobo at first because his Magic only hit 799, and I kept hearing the goal was 800. Fortunately, he's still A rank in both racing stats. Also I read that giving him Health Nut basically forces your odds to stay at 2.2, so I didn't infuse it onto him, only to find that his odds are always 2.2 regardless. So I'll also be fusing that onto him tonight.
Finally found that last 2% on New Bodhum. Stupidly, it was while exploring Serah's house. I'm not entirely sure which tiny corner or nook gave me the 2%, but that was the biggest pain in the ass. That little house alone is like 15% of map completion, and I know I'd checked out every inch of it at least 2-3 times before.
At least now I can stop worrying about it, and hope no other maps are as ridiculous with a small segment of the larger piece.

One map that gave me a real headache to complete was Academia 400AF, fuck that map so bad.

Best of luck with the power generators, if you find a good spot feel free to share :P. Ended up grinding 5-600k gil getting the crystals for Odin, not to mention 70 Royal Armlets.

Evidently the only really good place to farm them is Archylte Steppe, Stormy weather, near the gate in the Graven Ridge area off Malabranches or whatever.
The Silver Chocobo is a money-generating machine. Several hundred casino coins a race plus collector's catalogs that sell for 11k gil a pop.
What is the hardest fight in the game? If it's Yomi, he really didn't seem that tough compared to several of the hunts in FF13 (like Vercingtarox or whatever Yomi was supposed to be like).
MaddocI'm Bobbin Threadbare, are you my mother?Registered Userregular
Yeah, basically the only way my Chocobo botches a race is if I fuck up the dash start and he's also in poor condition.
Even then he can usually squeeze out a win in 600m races.
I think I'm going to see about infusing the race skill that gives you a larger window for the dash start next. I have no intention to ever use my Silver Chocobo in combat, so I'm fine with loading him up with nothing but racing skills.
farmed mission 7 for a little bit yesterday. Now lightning and fang have * level tier 1s and hope has the second tier of hawkeye. I just hope I'm upgrading the right weapons. Ugh, upgrading lightning's sword requires a 220000gil catalyst.
I've gotten 2 tetradic crown drops and no tiara's in the hour I spent, even with a catalogue. Does leveling up the catalogue help at all?
Oof, first set of last bosses pummeled me a bit. Got far too complacent just auto chaining battles with rav/com/rav. Guess I'll actually, you know, spend some time building a paradigm pack with proper classes.
Finally got my silver choco racing (that effing cactuar took me maybe 30 tries to catch and hella long to FIND those 30 cactuars). Picked up 2 catalogs right away. Is there anything else must have from racing or should I just grind out coins for the 3 frags and call it a day.
Hopefully the catalogs will make some arch steppes rainy day farming kind of enjoyable in terms of monster feed drops.
Argh, I just want so much more of this game already.
I'm sure this has already been talked about, but I beat the game yesterday and found the ending to be incredibly dark...probably one of the darkest FF endings I've ever seen. Its awesome!
I'm sure this has already been talked about, but I beat the game yesterday and found the ending to be incredibly dark...probably one of the darkest FF endings I've ever seen. Its awesome!
Probably the most dark FF's ever gotten, really. Although there are plenty of people who just can't accept the concept of a dark ending to a FF game and are hooting "DLC ENDING" over and over again. Most of these people, of course, haven't played the game yet, but they saw a news article about DLC and the To Be Continued thing, and saw like, a youtube blog that says they should be, like, mad, so HOOT HOOT DLC ENDING HOOT HOOT.
Alternately, reality is that there probably will be an ending via DLC to resolve that. I really liked the ending, but I don't see any reason that you either have to hate it and go zomgmoneydlcendinghate or try to pretend that there won't be a resolution via DLC (or, worse, imo, FFXIII-3). Both are pretty unrealistic/unreasonable stances.
It's gonna happen. Whether that is good or bad is subjective; but I don't think that the "to be continued" was an arbitrary thing. It's there because, you know, they at least plan to continue it in some manner. That they've been touting the game will have extensive DLC post-release leads to the obvious conclusion that yeah...it will be continued via DLC.

And I'm ok with that, really. What I can't get my brain around is people having a fit about the ending because "video games aren't allowed to end that way."
Fucking hell? Says who?
Granted, again, these are idiots on Escapist and Gamefaqs who haven't bought nor played the game, and are getting their info based on... forum posts and youtube videos telling them to be mad about it. Kinda annoying.

So my Silver Chocobo has Sprinter (Increase speed for short duration races), Marathoner (Increase stamina for long duration races), Blue Streak (activates when you use the fourth strategy, increases rate of Boost charge), Second Wind (increase effect of Turbo and Blue Streak), and Dark Horse (increases odds if you're a favorite)
I kind of wanted to try and get the Underdog title before infusing Health Nut onto him, but he's never not a favorite anyway so that idea is out the window. I think my next infusions will be Health Nut (Condition is constantly favorable), Attention Hog (stats increase when deemed a favorite), and Rocket Blast (increases the window of time for a successful dashing start)
Is it worth it to try and set up a second strategy type? Blue Streak seems kind of bad on 1800m races. Sometimes I'll find that by the time Blue Streak activates there's too much of a gap between me and the lead to make up for it.
I've got two slots left, so I could give him both Lightning Bolt by infusing a level 1 Zwerg Metro (activates with the second strategy, increases rate of Boost charge) and Runaway by infusing a level 1 Nanochu (increase the effect of Supersonic and Lightning Bolt)
The only real issue at hand is it would require me to eat a one-time-only monster.
Chocobo racing is absolutely not worth eating a unique monster for. The silver chocobo isn't terribly useful in battles so it's fine tailoring it for the racing...but yah, I wouldn't, for any reason, sacrifice a unique for the racing. Sure, there are a couple of the last races that are pretty challenging with the fourth strategy/blue streak, but they reward adornments, not actual equipment or anything; everything else is very easily won. And even the hard ones can be won, it just takes some time.
And for the most part, the special races/equipment rewards from racing are one time only. The exceptions are the non-special race rewards and those are usually pretty easy to win anyway; particularly the collectors Catalog one is super easy if you built your chocobo even halfway right (i totally dicked mine up, had to waste a tonberry, and still ended up perfectly fine).
And after all that and the achievement/trophy? You'll never do racing again. It's easier to farm money with upgraded catalogs and turn it into chips to buy what you want from the vendor.
So don't stress too much about the chocobo racing. Unless you just really enjoy it. Just keep in mind that the reward for most special races turns into leveling materials after the first win, so there's no real motive to spam them.
MaddocI'm Bobbin Threadbare, are you my mother?Registered Userregular
To be fair, it's only Nanochu
Though, Pack Mentality has some interesting potential down the line with all of the human dlc "monsters" they're releasing, so it might be a waste to burn it on chocobo racing
So I'm getting close to finishing XIII and rather than jumping straight into XIII-2 (since I'm a little burnt out on the combat for now), I'm going to go back and play FFIX.
I had put about 30 hours into it about 8 or 9 years ago and someone broke into my parent's house and stole my PS2, including the memory card. I was probably most upset about losing that save because I figured I would likely never want to replay 30 hours of it.
Well, it's been long enough that I've forgotten most of it but I do seem to remember a lot of missable stuff (and I did have the horrendous guide back then...ughghghgh). Is there a nice list anywhere of things I shouldn't miss out on?
Even when it was new it was still incredibly frustrating to constantly have to look online to find out anything that should have been in the guide in the first place.
How bradygames didn't get sued so hard for that is beyond me.
I beat XIII. I dont like open-ended exploring games, i like a general path to take.
Will I like XIII-X2 or will i be lost and hate it?
13 has very linear hallways with very little exploration at all, with the one exception of Gran Pulse. 13-2 has areas that are a bit more open, but it is still fairly linear. The main difference is the "Historia Crux" which is basically your world map. Only instead of traveling simply to different destinations, you travel to different time periods, often repeating the same areas with slight variations on them.
Thanks for the replies everyone. I might have to check it out.
I got the PS3 version of FXIII because it looked a lot better on my projector than the 360 counterpart. Im guessing this will be the same way.

No idea on 360 vs. PS3 for XIII-2, but I've heard XIII-2 took a little bit of a graphical hit from XIII so it might not make that much of a difference.
I feel like I've missed a lot. I seem to be approaching the endgame yet I only just visited Serendipity for the first time an hour ago and I haven't even tried any of the games yet.

My copy of FFXIII-2 and the CE strategy guide have been out for delivery since this morning. I hope to play it today but my roommate and his girlfriend are having a cool valentine's day in the living room with the console and I don't wanna bug them. Dangit.
oh god damn it I need a 100,000 catalyst to upgrade lightning's sword to lv 2. This game really doesn't want you to get the ultimate weapons prior to beating it
You get a lot of catalysts by doing missions. Just doing missions 1-14 and getting the gold nuggets from Pulsian Pioneer got me enough money to upgrade all my characters' weapons to max level 2.

I always forget this version of Melodies of Life exists until it comes up in my gigantic nerd mix.
"Chocorodeo" is the best term ever created by a Final Fantasy game.
