Internet Connectivity Problem (Laptop)

Running Windows 7. It's an Acer Aspire Netbook - just to get that stuff out of the way.

BACKSTORY:
So a few weeks back a friend had me look at his laptop which had one of those stupid fake antivirus programs on it. I used Malewarebytes to remove it and installed Microsoft Security Essentials for him to kind of prevent this stuff from happening again. When I returned it to him everything looked fine to me - no noticeable connectivity issues. The next day he tells me he is having an issue connecting to the internet. I told him to double check what network he was trying to connect to and then reset his router, just to be sure. Still same issue - he can connect to his router but no Internet. He can connect with his iPhone but not on his laptop. He tried it again at the local coffee shop with the same problem. Connects to the network but no internet connectivity.

PROBLEM and the shit I've tried:
So I have the laptop again and yeah that's the issue. It can connect to my router but not to the internet. Other wireless devices have no trouble connecting so its not a router issue.

I ran ipconfig /all and one thing I have noticed is that under "Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address" it reads 169.254.226.11 - which is obviously not right.

I double checked and it is set to auto-configure IP address - so I don't know why it is stuck to this weird address. I didn't have much luck trying to set the IP address to 192.168.1.111 or whatever random number because I really don't know much about this (what would I set the DNS to anyhow?) and even if it worked I couldn't really make it work for him outside of his house - which obviously defeats the purpose of carrying around a laptop.

OH GOD PLEASE HELP
Network shit is not my bag - I've tried to give a decent backstory to this but if you need more info please ask and I will provide to the best of my ability.

Any way to try a direct wired connection using an ethernet cable directly to your router or modem?

Ah yeah, I should have mentioned that I tried that with no effect. I also tried to ipconfig release/renew but it gave an error message and I don't think it worked.

It doesn't sound like it's connecting to the router if it's getting a 169 address. That means DHCP isn't working and it's not pulling a valid address from the router. Try removing and reinstalling the wireless adapter. Use the repair feature. You could static it, but like you said that would defeat the purpose of moving the laptops around on different networks.

    Definitely reinstall the adapter.
If reinstalling the adapter doesn't work, Check the Wireless network connection properties for "This connection uses the following items" and uncheck anything to do with any antivirus software installed.
As pacbowl said, a 169 IP address is one that windows assigns if it isn't getting one elsewhere.
Also you can try the following:
Windows key + R to open the run command
    Type in:
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt [press enter] (dos box will appear and disappear real quick)

Then Windows +R again and type in:
netsh winsock catalog reset [press enter] (same will happen again) now reboot PC and router.

    Hopefully something here will work.

169 etc is when windows is failing to connect to the DHCP server.

Also Windows Key + R (or start run) and type in msconfig
click services, uncheck hide all microsoft services, and enable all. Some viruses are nice enough to disable all the non-essential services including DHCP client.
If that doesnt work most likely you did not completely clean the virus infection, start there. I would probably bring out the bigger guns and run a combofix scan.

Alright so nothing here worked and I don't think there is a virus

I took this to a friend of mine who knows what he is doing and he suspects the virus that used to be on there hijacked the DHCP client and when I removed the virus it broke the DHCP client as well.

So we are getting a Windows 7 disk and going to try to run repair, hopefully that will do something?
