No cause of death listed. Houston was found dead in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton. She had been in rehab several times in the last few years for drug abuse, most recently this past year, which had forced her to cancel her comeback tour.
Though she had put out few hit songs in the last decade, her music will be missed. She was 48.

Why did you care enough to ask why we care? How far down this rabbit hole do we go?
there is no particular reason to care about her death more than anyone else's for most of us
there is also no reason to dismiss it, or any emotional reaction to it
since, you know, human lives are valuable and we can feel bad not only for her death but for the life that she lived and the suffering she endured

There are lots of historical examples of artists who did lots of drugs, but a lot of them continued to have productive careers even while on drugs.
Whitney seems to really only have had two eras: Hits, and Drugs.

I knew she had some serious, serious problems but I'd always assumed she would continue to endure those problems until she no longer needed to, let them go, and could then get on with her life after that. I guess this was not to be.
Yes, apparently she got into a fight with some girl over Ray J (Brandy's brother).
She made great music, had a seemingly really shitty personal life.
I hope she found some peace and my condolences to her friends and family.

As self-destructive as she got, she didn't seem to take any particular joy in dragging other people down with her, like some addicts I've known. Too bad she couldn't get her shit together and live up to what she could have been.

Whitney Houston was kind of a tragic person. Really lost her way, and while I wasn't a personal fan of her singing, that's a totally shit thing to have happen. You'd think the effect of drugs on people would sink in already.
Never followed news about her enough to gauge if she was happy as of late, or not. If not, then hey, at least it's over.
Part of me would have wanted her too pull out of it and make a recovery, because thats what I want every person dealing with addiction. Addiction is a disease. When people die from disease its sad.
It was hard to tell. For at least a year now, she had been really trying to get her comeback off the ground, but kept running into roadblocks, and honestly it was probably due to her addiction problems. She was invited places to sing and would forget the words to her songs, she was forced to cancel shows at the last minute, and she was still occasionally being found intoxicated and/or concealing large amounts of drugs on her person at inappropriate places.
And now details are coming out that she was pursuing a relationship with a man almost 20 years her younger, whose birthday party is the one she was seen leaving (being asked to leave?) in poor shape the night before she died.
I think Whitney will be missed like we miss most people who pass away. Sadly, I doubt it will stem from the "what could have been" feeling about her music and talent as it feels like she hit her peak in 80's. Drug abuse and personal problems seemed to have been a perfect recipe for a steady descent into oblivion.
At least she can hang out with Michael Jackson now.

Chaka Khan and Jennifer Hudson are supposed to perform a tribute to Houston.
It's not that simple. There are numerous factors to consider. There's the constant access and encouragement to do drugs and alcohol by her peers, colleagues and entourage, family squabbles, being kept in a bubble from reality that you can do no wrong, pressure from their bosses and fans to be the best. It's very tough for celebrities not to do drugs, become mentally unstable or being an asshole.
It was up front in the 80's. It's kept covert now. Nothing's really changed.
You're right individuals need to take responsibility for taking drugs. I'm only saying for people in Hollywood the pressure and access make that much easier to slip and stay in a bad situation.
I think in this particular incidence you have a celebrity that had an overly strong attraction (biological or otherwise) to drugs and a hedonistic lifestyle. Once Whitney got on drugs, they basically took over her life and she never shook them.
The sad thing is this won't be the last celebrity who dies from people unwilling to say no to them.
