Life in general, not everything in life

Pooping would be so fun with a jetpack

I don't think Socrates ever really gave a good explanation for why the PKs wouldn't use the ring for evil, especially since the point was that anyone who had the ring would eventually be tempted by it.

Well, the explanation would be by definition; Socrates' definition of a philosopher king simply would not use the ring, because it is not their desire to do so. The story of the ring of Gyges shows that all unjust men submit to corruption, greed, etc. The middle few books of The Republic are a complex analogy of a state to a person, and argue that a well-ordered state and a well-ordered soul both exhibit the virtues, which a philosopher should pursue.

We're kinda going in circle at this point. You are right, that is what Socrates says. But I think that's a cop out. "They wouldn't use it by definition" does not address the points of the counterargument, it simply dismisses them and moves on.

Well, what are the points of the counter argument? That people are mean when they're anonymous? My (not socrates) counter argument to that would be that not everyone who's anonymous is unjust, and to paint all of humanity with a broad brush is a little premature.

I agree, actually. I just think that there is a huge swath of people who, at a glance, appear to be unselfish and kind but are meanspirited in their heart. It's the old "nice guy" phallacy where the shy guy who doesn't say much is considered to be a "nice guy" and doesn't get the girl.

Plenty of those "nice guys" are actually huge dicks online. Their fear of retribution and consequence is what keeps them from being assertive.

So yeah, I don't think everyone is really evil and despicable. I just think there are way more jerks out there than you'd notice at a glance from how they act IRL.

Those "nice guys" also tend to have some really fucked up issues re: how they view women and relationships too

    They're assholes offline

    They just don't realize it

I remember the first time I heard about the "that guy" phenomenon from a feminist friend of mine.

I was confused at first. Mainly because I'm nice but it's not actually to hide anything, I'm just nice. Also I tend to assume the best of others so when I started paying attention and realised how prevalent a thing it is I got bummed out.

I should make a distinction here between good guys and "nice guys"

Good guys are legitimately good guys, they act that way because that's who they are

"nice guys" do it because they think this is how you woo a girl and if they do X Y Z then that girl will HAVE to date them. They're not actually nice guys, they're manipulative assholes

Coincidentally the "this is what to do formula" line of thinking is the core of PUA too

Yeah, the distinction is definitely important.

Like I said, I generally want to think the best of people/take them at face value, but she opened up my eyes to certain behaviour.

Recognizing manipulative behavior is something that can really tarnish your opinion of the human race. By acknowledging and realizing how I'd been manipulated over the years by various people, I actually ended up being a much less friendly person.

Like the old saying goes, "In god we trust, all others pay cash".

A key feature of the Niceguy is that he is really mad at being manipulative.

Hence the complaints along the lines of "I'm a nice guy, but the girls always go for the assholes."

It's sometimes a pretty nebulous distinction but the whole "nice guys finish last" thing is a favourite of assholes trying to justify their life decision to be assholes, or by unassertive or passive-aggressive types who can point at the old axiom and let it be known that their failings lie in the tragedy of how nice they are

I have to admit, I did read The Game (in my mid-teens, bleh) and for every guy there that seemed at least a little interestend in actually being a better person there were about ten who thought of it as a way to apply video game cheats to life.

Also, I have once (again in my mid-teens) actually used the "nice guys finish last" thing about myself. I blame the fact that I was an asshole back then.

and on the flip side there are assholes who justify their actions by thinking about stuff this way. "Yeah I'm an asshole but so is everyone, really"

    I also read The Game

and in the end all the pickup bullshit didn't matter

what mattered was that the main guy got out of his comfort zone, got some social hobbies and improved his confidence and people skills

that is not how you 'get women' but how you become an interesting and likable human being
