Sony and Immersion end lawsuit promising to go for cookies and milk, work together.
We look forward to exploring with Immersion exciting new ways to bring the largest and best range of gameplay experiences to our customers," said Kazuo Hirai, President and Group Chief Operating Officer, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
Sony's been eating its words so often lately, they should join Weight Watchers. Great news for the PS3 though. Hopefully, the launch games will get a 1.1 revision with rumble support and the next Sixaxis will have some density to it.
I'm hoping this was a result from the terrible rep they forged for themselves. I'm not very interested in a PS3 right now but I'm hoping Sony can swallow their pride and do what they need to do.
Agreed. This is a good thing. Playstation Home and now rumble? My PS3 is looking all the more attractive.
Yes, Kojima is peeing himself in excitement.
If this comes to fruition, though, I would hope that Sony don't gouge early adopters by making them buy new controllers. And the Sixaxis already costs $50 retail, right? I hate to be Debbie Downer, but I'm sure Sony will want to hustle and push rumble back into everything it can, and I just hope the early adopters don't get trampled in the meantime.
This is good news because I will probably buy one two or three years down the line.
"No, what we meant is rumble isn't NEXT-Gen. Rumble is, however, THIS-Gen, and since the PS3... HAIL SATAN... is this gen, obviously the PS3... HAIL SATAN... will have rumble. I don't know why the gaming press thought any differently."
Wonder how Sony will spin this, since they said it was impossible because of the tilt control.

I don't think they're even hiding the fact that it's possible any more. The last excuse they made was that 'it'd cost too much' (which is probably right, since they would've lost billions if they settled with Immersion).
Looks like the Sixaxis is destined to become as unloved and forgotten as the original PlayStation controller (seriously, did that thing even have a name?)

it's because the technology to make it work is so advanced, that their top engineers have only just been able to crack it. People should be honoured to hold these things, whatever price Sony choose to sell them at.
Agreed. This is a good thing. Playstation Home and now rumble? My PS3 is looking all the more attractive.
Except now you'll have to rebuy your controllers if you want the rumble. I hope you didn't already buy extra controllers.
So you'd rather they don't add rumble back in for those who want it? Everyone whined and bitched and moaned like crazy when they announced it wouldn't have rumble, and now everyone is whining and bitching and moaning like crazy when they announce they'll put it back in. What the hell do you want?
And I won't buy the rumble controllers right away. I'm happy without them at the moment. I doubt they'll make it a requirement, nor will game developers. It is, most likely, a choice. And it's a choice I appreciate. Like the original quote said, better late than never.

Once again this is a case of Sony should have known what the hell they were doing before releasing the PS3.

So they should've added rumble in from the start even when they had a large lawsuit about the issue apparently preventing them from doing it? Right now, you and everyone else is just bitching for the sake of bitching. There's obvious bias, and no matter what news comes out, good or bad, someone will spin it to make it negative. The six negative threads we have going against Sony on the first page are a little much, no?
And I don't get what the hell you even mean. So you're against putting rumble back in? Is that the stance you're taking? Do you even have a stance relevant to the issue?

Of course it's a good thing that they add rumble. I just meant that you, as an earlier adopter, got the shaft on rumble. Future buyers of the PS3 will be happy and have rumble controllers without needing to shell out extra cash.

True, but that couldn't be helped at the time. I'm just glad I have the choice now to adopt rumble again or not to. I don't have a second controller yet, so when those come out, I may get one. But I don't see what's so negative about this. Rumble is good and choice is good. The venom is just so thick on the boards right now. I swear, we should just create a sub-forum based solely on Sony bashing.

Don't play stupid. You know as well as anyone that Sony could've settled at any time.

Absolutely. I remember Immersion's reps talking at last years E3 about how they could have it done the next day!
The negative thing here is two fold. Sony's words do not matter to their consumers, as they will change when it is convenient for Sony. This is proof and reason for their consumers to not trust them.
Secondly, the problem for early adopters is they feel let down, and shit on. They will have to buy new $50 controllers to get the feature that was standard last gen.

Right, but because we live in the present and not the past, it's like I originally said: better late than never. "Coulda, woulda, shoulda..." doesn't really mean anything.

If I remember right, Immersion came out shortly after the "rumble would mess with the motion sensors" comment and said they have rumble tech that could work with motion.

Even better than that - they presented 3 different concepts that proved it could work.

As someone who plans on buying a PS3 in like 2 years, this makes me happy. From my experience at kiosks I felt that the controller wasn't just lacking rumble, it was lacking the weight and sturdiness the rumble weights bring.

I don't like it when a company lies. They were lieing about rumble not being possible with motion controls. They tried to spin it with rumble being last gen.
Now that they've suddenly changed their tune isn't it right for consumers to be mad? Since they lied to us? Since they're not taking responsibility for lieing?
Why should we view this as only a good thing for the PS3? Why should we be happy with Sony? They lied to us.

Plus the Wii remote.
Indeed, sony can easily spin this by saying "our initial statements were based on out current rumble technology. Advancements in this field now mean we can offer PS3 customers the combination of motion control and rumble technologies" or some bullshit. It makes what they said not appear to technically be a lie.
As for saying "rumble is last gen", they'll just pretend they never said it.
I hope your precious feelings weren't hurt too much, Death of Rats. It's a shame you're so upset that a business in this day and age would ever lie to you about a console you probably don't, and don't intend to, own, especially in regards to rumble technology. I guess they shouldn't add rumble back in? I'm still unclear what your stance even is. From everything you've said, I take it you'd rather them not include rumble back into the controllers?
It's simple, either rumble is a good thing or it's not. Most people agree rumble is a good feature, and them adding it back in with me having the choice to adopt it or not seems very reasonable. Sure, they lied in the past about not being able to include it; suck it up. They're including it now, and that's what's important. They're adding features to the system. I'd rather them include it back than never do it at all just because they said it was impossible in the past.

No one is telling you to think anything. If you think Sony is feeding you nothing but lies, that's your thing. Me? I don't care what some PR guy said post-E3 about rumble technology, or what Phil Harrison feels a "next-gen" controller should be. I'm a consumer, not a journalist, so if Sony puts out a product that I'll like, I'll buy it. If not, I'll take my money elsewhere. Trying to dissect all the past comments made by various Sony employees just seems like a waste of time.
I just think it's a good thing that the two companies were able to put this shit behind them and that they both realize that I, and a lot of other consumers, would like to have rumble in our controllers. It's as simple as that.

Poor Sony. Every good bit of news brings with it bad news. Though at least they're trying now.
They'll probably pretend like their past comments never existed and include tilt and rumble together in future controllers.

Seriously though, I'm glad this is happening. Even if it makes Sony look kinda dumb it was a good long term move.
So when's Sony going to start charging for online... you know, since they seem to be ignoring everything else they've said about the PS3 lately.
