What beer do you like? (Survey: Win $100 Amazon gift card)
I am an occasional poster here and a current grad student. For a class, my group is exploring consumer preference for beer. If you are willing to take the survey and help me out I would greatly appreciate it. We have one $100 Amazon gift cards to randomly distribute to entrants.
The data itself will only be reported in aggregate and any email address will be used only for contacting the drawing winners and then deleted. If you do not want to provide an email address, feel free to put in "<YourUsername@PENNYARCADE.COM" instead and I will track you down through PM if you are selected. However, you do not have to put in any identification to complete the survey.
To give this thread some legs, what kind of beer do you prefer? Do you make different choices when you're at a bar compared to at a party or a supermarket?
Thanks!
Some quick edits - for location, if you're not in the US, just put N/A.
Also, for the price attribute - this isn't super clear, but it is meant as price not value if you associate it with being expensive, rate the price attribute high.
I find I will buy any Beer that is attractively stacked on the end cap of an Aisle. j/k
I like a wide range from Darks to Blonds. usually I am willing to give a new beer a try. I don't find my preferences changing with the location or activity. Of course if I am home what I like is available if I am out I will try something new.
I've lately been digging on the latest Blue Moon seasonal, a blonde wheat ale. It's great for drinking, and it's also great for cooking. I've been adding a bottle whenever I make soup or stew, and my better half has been using it as a substitute for baking yeast to make some outstanding breads.
Like, I seriously cannot rave about how good of a bread it makes. It yields a thick, salty crust and a sweet, light bread. I would take this bread in lieu of birthday cake for my 31st. And I'd wash it down with the other five bottles in a six pack.

Since they didn't really address it in the survey, I'll try most beers that are in the 7.50 dollar range here in MO/IL. If they are much more than that I am much more hesitant to buy them unless I've had them before and know that I like them.
My main purchases are from New Belgium, Goose Island and Schafly (with some blue moon and cider's thrown in for fun).
FYI it won't let you use an email address in a format other than *@*.*

"How strongly do you associate each of the following elements with the Pyramid line of beers?"
Then there's a bunch of categories. Can you clarify what each means? For example, price. Are we associating it via its value relative to its cost, or are we associating it by total priceyness?
Country/continent/state only lists US states, no other options alas
My fav beer to date is Leffe Blonde, but I can't purchase it for home without doing a large special order so I have to visit the one restaurant in town that carries it if I want any I tend to drink beer mostly in the summer and rarely, if ever in the winter, but lately I've been doing Fruhli strawberry beer for a dessert drink

One of the questions asks "Which state, country, or continent do you live in?" and the pull-down proceeds to give you 50 states to choose from.
Are there supposed to actually be countries and/or continents?
FYI it won't let you use an email address in a format other than *@*.*
Hmm. Okay, if you want to put in your PA username, do it as NAME@PENNYARCADE.COM - I'll do a search for PennyArcade and special case those after the fact.

The attributes are somewhat intentionally vague - we're going for first/gut impressions. However you're right - price is unclear. We intend it to mean price not value if you associate the beer with being expensive, rate the price attribute high.
FYI: You currently have it set up so you can choose multiple numerical responses to a single question. You probably want to change that. I intended for my highest responses to be my responses.
I often try new beers at a bar, particularly during happy hour when the price becomes a non-existent barrier to experimentation.
After that, if I like a beer, I will usually pick a certain brand at the supermarket, but I will experiment as to which type of beer I will pick from that brand.
It's asking me what I associate Pyramid with but I already told I've never tried it. I've never even heard of it. Do I answer do not associate at all then?
Yuengling is my go to drink. Besides that, my friends and I like to go out and select new beers to try all the time, but I never remember which ones are the best (excluding one blueberry beer that was purple-colored, mmm).

Bah, clearly I need to go yell at our survey maker. It should have skipped to the next question if you say you are not familiar with a brand. Just answer whatever and I'll filter it out after the fact.
Thanks for the feedback guys! Clearly we need it :P

This was also a problem for me - I'd never heard of it. I just put "4" (neutral-ish?) for all the questions about it.

Filled it out but the survey wasn't really for me.
My favorite beers tend to be dark ales, belgians, porters, stouts, brown ales are good too, not as much fondness for light ales. I'l go out of my way to try beers I haven't had more often at a bar when it's less of a price commitment. Though I will buy a pack of dark beer or a microbrew ale at a store. Less likely to try something light in case I don't like it though.

Shoot, I did the price thing in reverse when I filled it out because I didn't read that. I would suggest clarifying it.

If you guys do more surveys, PM me and be glad to offer some suggestions. Sounds like they didn't get your specs quite right, but there's a few other things I might change.
Check out Survey Monkey's blog for some good tips. We use them (Monkey) at work, but applies to any online questions.
As for beer, I'll try something new if it catches my eye , but can't go wrong with Adams or New Belgium.
My favourite saying when it comes to beer is "if I can see through it I probably won't like it" and it almost always rings true.
Guinness was the first beer I fell in love with and have since fallen for Kilkinny pretty hard (it's also REALLY hard to find around me). I also like unfiltered wheats (big fan of Gorden Biersch's) and a lot of porters (Kona's Pipeline Porter) and stouts (Dominion's Oak Barrel Stout). I've had some märzens I've liked and some I didn't like. I cannot stand IPAs of any variety and have yet to find a pilsner I consider drinkable. Brown ales are okay, but there are so many other beers out there I'd prefer to drink that I usually won't get one.
I also loves me some Shandy and Leinenkugal's does a good job of a pre-made version. The real thing just can't be beat, though.
Been drinking Stone Brewery's line, always have good six packs and their Double Bastard Ale kills. Could go on about some other good breweries: Founders, Rogue, Bells, and Cleveland Brewery. Found out there's a local line that has awesome brew, Hoppin' Frog.
Got stumped on the Pyramid Brew question. Figured that I answered no to ever trying it, the questionaire would not proceed to ask more about my non-existant Pyramid experience.
@TabooPhantasy Saw that you don't drink IPAs. I was never driven to voluntarily get IPAs until I had Bells Two Hearted IPA. Can't say it'll convert anyone but I tried it... great stuff.
Imagine what "cheese' could exist if someone tried to copy Velveeta.
To give this thread some legs, what kind of beer do you prefer? Do you make different choices when you're at a bar compared to at a party or a supermarket?
Style preference would be Imperial and Coffee Stouts, Strong Ales, IPA's. I'm not crazy about belgian beers, something about the spice notes turns me off.
9 times out of 10, I'm bringing my own beer to a party.
If I'm out at a bar, and they don't have any craft beer on tap, I will usually order Sam Adams or Guinness, depending on what I'm eating.
Yeah I'd be curious what you are going for with the survey based on the brands you chose. My responses weren't very high considering other than Sam Adams quality I don't really associate much with them or buy them often.
I'm a big fan of IPAs but enjoy most beers. I actually actively try to stay away from the Miller Coors and InBev beers since I really do not like their politics and find most of their beers to be bland. If I had to pick a favorite craft brewer it would be Dogfish Head. I'll kill people to drink their 60 minute IPA.
I mostly prefer big, dark, stouts and porters and scottish ales. Some of my favorites are Lion Stout, New Holland's The Poet, every Fade to Black that Left Hand has released, Duck Rabbit's Milk Stout, and Skullsplitter. When I want something slightly different I also really like Legend Brown (local brewery here in Richmond, Va), Rogue's Dead Guy Ale, or a doppelbock of some sort. I've also recently been trying to get into belgian ales. I find the yeast hard to deal with, but I've been enjoying the dark belgian ales that I have tried recently.
I tend to prefer darker beers mostly. Generally, I like to try stuff that is new to me and has a higher alcohol content (7.5-9.5%). Big fan of strong beers. Current favorites are Pike Place Kilt Lifter, Rogue Dead Guy Ale and Boulevard Double IPA.

I didn't really think price was that nebulous, to be honest. The survey said price, not value, and it meant price, not value.
The difference between craft and quality, on the other hand... :P

- Blue Point Toasted Lager
- Delirium Tremens
- Blue Moon
- Hoegaarden
An awesome sour beer from New Belgium.
1) Strongbow Cider
2) Gulden Draak-a Belgian triple. (fav Dark)
3) Stonebridge Gluten Free, made from sugercane I think. (For a pale)
1) Miller Lite - It's cheap, tasty, and I've been drinking it most of my alcohol using life. What can I say, I'm from the deep south.
2) Yazoo - It's local, so I enjoy it for that reason alone mostly. It's cheap here, expensive elsewhere.
3) Anything from Left Hand Brewery, especially the good juju which is seasonal I believe.
specifically Hitachino Espresso stout

I knew I had a good feeling about you all.
Used to go to Watch City Brewing in Waltham, MA when I was going to school in the area and really loved their Titan Ale.
