People are resistant to $20+ eSports costs because a disproportionately high number of poor young people who like eSports are getting reamed by what might be the worst economy since the great depression.
Or at least a reasonable person can assume this doesn't help.

Uh, I think that actually is the point, GnomeTank. Wendy's is an entertainment purchase relative to the grocery store. He could have easily gone to the grocery store and banked the difference, do that a meager 4 times enough and you've saved enough money for the stream.
Edit: I mean that we aren't very attentive of our discretionary purchases. For a lot of us, it wouldn't take that much analysis to find $20 to re-route, and if we think about the entertainment value, maybe it's worth it. (I didn't buy it but I would have for $10)

$17 for a movie ticket? Do they serve free drinks?
Nope, but usually the EasyWay's near Cinemas have deals where, if you buy a drink there, you get a slightly discounted movie ticket.
It means you can't book online etc though.
$20 for something is that only (??) enjoyable online is a really high price point.
EDIT: I wonder if MLG ended up doing things like public broadcasting licenses, for Barcrafts etc. If you buy a movie it might cost you $20, but if you have to purchase a movie to show in a public place, it's gonna be a helluvalot more.

Except Wendy's isn't an entertainment purchase, it's a time/service commodity buy. You are paying Wendy's a markup to prepare your food for you, with the intent of saving time. That's what your buying. Time saved doing something you must do anyway (eat). I don't go to Wendy's to be entertained, I go to Wendy's to save a little time off something I have to do anyway, when the quality of the meal is overshadowed by how fast it's handed to me.
There is no grocery store of MLG PPV streams for me to go save a few bucks if my time/value equation says I have the time to make chicken nuggets at home, instead of buying them from the Wendy's drive through. It's not a time saving purchase, it's purely entertainment, and here's the kicker no one seems to want to acknowledge: It's WAYYYYYYYYYYYY over normal market value for equivalent products. Laughably so.
I saw a movie tonight at the cinema earlier, in sweden it runs at ~16$ for a regular movie ticket. Chronicle was well worth it.
With these prices 20$ for an entire weekend is very reasonable ^^.
Also, production values are insane, this stream viewer spoils me horribly. Won't be able to stand other tournaments running several streams after this amazing functionality.

$20 dollars for a weekend seems stellar, until you look at market valuation and realize $20 bucks get's me a month of Code S, Code A and sub-tournaments, plus access to all of Gom's video library, including their extra content like player interviews and variety shows.
At any rate, we've probably worn out this conversation. No one's mind is going to get changed. Either $20 bucks is good for you, or it's not. I wish MLG success, even if I won't pay it until I feel they bring it back in to the realm of reasonable.

in my day you couldn't just pay your way into a cinema, you had to have three acres of land and a cow before you were even put on the waiting list
if you felt like being risky you could try and sneak into the rafters and watch from there, but if you got caught it was straight to the stocks with you

So you'll pay $50 bucks to see fake wrestling, but you won't pay 50 bucks to see real wrestling/fighting? I mean, it's your money and all...but 50 bucks for a glorified soap opera is a lot.
i had a realisation the other day
i get the feeling people who watcch "wrestling" watch it for the sspectacle, rather than any sort of sport. Its like people who pay to go see a play. You know its not real but that is of course the point
I'm not buying arena because I think there should have been one free for Gold Members, since it was billed as "you get everything in HD!" They basically eliminated silver, downgraded gold to silver and created a new tier of membership and that's shitty.

You're probably 100% right. Part of the reason it doesn't appeal to me is that real sports do appeal to me. I'm not in to the spectacle, I'm in to the competition. Different strokes.

On a different topic, how awesome would it be if all the casters for English streams were forced to read this poem out, aloud, in order to verify their ability to pronounce their chosen language?: http://www.thepoke.co.uk/2011/12/23/english-pronunciation/
arghhh all this layout stuff and cool overview stuff and the lineup and stuff makes it all seem worth it
curse my horrible memory
if there's anything that could make this worth it, they did it imo. looks beautiful, works really well (smooth, I have 5 streams running right now, one at 1080P, and they're all smooth)and goddamn that lineup
god , i hate you. i struggle to run ONE 720p stream without stuttering.

I see your point on Wendys during a busy workday, but the idea that dining/eating out is an entertainment expense is pretty well established. The point isn't whether or not MLG is a restaurant. The point is that you have disposable, discretionary income. It's all opportunity cost. You are on the internet right now having a wonderful conversation with very cool people when you could be making sandwiches for your lunch tomorrow, and those savings could pay for the MLG stream. If you are fine with that opportunity cost, great! But it's worth analyzing to see if you could save the money, even if you just put it in a savings account. My only frustration comes from when people represent the status-quo as unmutable i.e. I have to eat, so I'll spend too much money at Wendys.
I know I'm drifting off topic here. I completely agree with your second point though, regardless of personal opportunity cost I do think that the MLG PPV is over market value.

I have them all at auto, so main one 1080, rest are 240.
As an experiment I booted up all the minor streams at bottom to 720.
It worked perfectly.
Do I post my 96/45 screenshot now to make dhal hate me more?
what type of internet connection do you actually have? is it fibre to the home, or is it that fibre to the node thing + VDSL2 that europe seems to have everywhere?
on the esports thing: I am a 20 year old college student and all my spare time goes to either sports and/or theater so I generally am not working when in school. I'm lucky that I have very supportive parents, but I do not have money to go out, see movies or really do anything other than play starcraft, which, thank god, was a one time purchase. I don't really eat out, either, I cook a lot.
I would LOVE to pay for the PPV esports because I would like to help support esports, but I have no money.

It's the 100/100 broadband that is available basically everywhere in sweden, except more rural places (like populations below 10k or so in a larger area). It's fiber, and in my case I am pretty damn close to the hub. 100/100 has also meant something like 40/20, or 30/15 on bad days in other places I have lived.
But as far as I am aware that is still really good compared to your alternatives :P.

ot wrestling stuff
yeah it confuses me when people compare wrestling to real fighting. the interest is much different. fighting is a sport, this is like you both said, closer to a play. Just a difference in how we approach it, for sure.
also I skip a lot of the real 'soap opera' stuff. I enjoy a good wrestling match, the rest is motivation for people who, oddly enough, I don't think enjoy the parts that I enjoy. it's like enjoying a good action scene in a film with the addition of it being live, an intangible element in performance.
also, I like competition a lot too. I watch lots of sports. and sc2
I wish I could see stream counts. huk I'm sure gave tastosis a run for their money.
If it works out well for them, they'll keep the price. If they don't make as much as they want, they'll try lowering the price.
This is easier to sell than starting at 5, seeing if they make as much as they want, then raising the price. People would be up in arms way more about going from 5-> whatever than from 20-> whatever.
seems like you're letting the t macro freely if they're not dumb

Exactly, Lemming. That's one of the points that Sundance brought up in that Cross Counter interview. Recommended viewing, actually. He talks about how they did run the numbers, and that 20 was what they felt was most likely to let them break even. Not even make a profit. Apparently Sundance wanted to have it lower, but they were like, no, try this first. Granted, it's a business, so take that with a grain of salt.
Even if it's successful, they are going to lower the price at this point just due to the huge community backlash. The success will determine how much they drop the price though.
On that note, when I get back from shopping, laundry, and boxing a Kangaroo, let's play 4s! (An hour or so)

Well, like I said earlier, some of it is mental barrier stuff. You could twist my arm at $15 bucks for a weekend...but just adding 5 and making it $20 bucks puts it beyond that mental breaking even point for me, for a weekend of entertainment (understanding that aside from a few specific things, like my computer and gadgets, I am a cheap fuck...I am wearing loose fit wranglers from Wal-mart right now, not because I can't afford 100 dollar jeans, because I refuse to fucking pay 100 bucks for denim).

Man our normal movie ticket prices are like $17, more for "VMAX" and/or 3D, and I never pay full price on those anyway.
Note: I haven't bought the MLG ticket.
